I bought the Naniwa Traditional and it works great. It's not as aggressive as some other makes but it gives great feedback and the bevel is smoother then other stones. Well worth the money.
I don't know if anyone's said this but you remind me of the man Ron Swanson I believe on the television show "Parks and Recreation". I've always really loved straight razors but never have bought one and now because of your videos I decided to go ahead and do it now that I have some basis of knowledge as to how to do the job right
The circular pattern is a huge help. I have a an AP Donovan and a Dovo I picked up in Germany and both needed honed badly. I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong. The circular pattern before the x strokes changed my blades to nearly new condition. Thanks!
I just bought a non-traditional stone from Ace Hardware "A DMT FINE DIAMOND STONE" One problem, it is diamonds, on metal, on orange plastic, on a black base. When I pick it off the shelf I didn't really pay attention to the weight of it, when opened the box up then I noticed it... I also got the honing solution... I was not impressed. But of course I just got two cheap Union blades from "Loves" truck stop. A black handle & white. I do have black tape.

I was curious though, what angle are you holding the razor to the stone with? I can't really tell if you have it resting on the spine as you would when stropping, or if you have it raised up just a bit in the back there? Most of the time when a bevel is set and the razor is honed, it can be maintained with just chromium oxide (or similar) and a finishing type stone almost indefinitely unless the razor is damaged. If damaged, then I would re-set. If in question, I would re-set. Sometimes if needed, you can go back to the 8K or 4K and hone up from there. Not the most precise science in addition to the YMMV aspect of the sport. Have fun.
great video, the question I have is, as you run the high carbon steel blade across the stone, the bits of high carbon steel come off into the slurry, doesn't it act like high carbon steel gravel and cause scratches in the micro bevel ?
I don't think that's possible. You're talking about swarf which is just metal suspended in the slurry. In order to scratch the micro bevel you need something harder than the actual metal like micro crystals or something, which are not ucommon in natural stones.
Thanks lynn, I have made some small mistakes, but learning well and your videos help tremendously. I am still a bit confused about the stabilizer and how that is handled during the honing. I was hanging the stabilizer and I found on my boker I got into the heal of the edge too much. I caught it quickly, but I am sure its something you would notice right away. So now I am making sure to keep the stabilizer on the stone as well, does this sound correct to you?
+Timothy Magee It does. If you lead with the heel, you will see where the contact starts and be able to control it. Some people actually sharpen into the heel, but I like to start with just up to the stabilizer on the stone like you are talking about.
Hey Lynn Abrams thank you for this video.. I am new to straight razors and want to learn how to set my own bevel. It seems that you use a 1k to start on a straight razor, Why do you choose a 1k vs say a 220 coarse stone? Whouldn't it be faster to set a bevel with a 220 vs a 1k? Great video Mr. Abrams! I'm using your advice to try and get an old Torrey razor shave ready again. After the 1k, 4k & 8k norton stones, I can shave in some areas with it, but it tugs and pulls a decent bit. Is this a sign the bevel is incorrect? Also, when I'm honing I feel like I'm applying a decent amount of pressure, but I don't notice as much of a slurry forming as when you hone. Appreciate your help and expertise Sir.
Kevin Pizor Try using weight of blade pressure only on the 8K for 5-7 strokes and see if that helps. I usually use more pressure on the 1K and then work down to very light pressure from the 8K on. Good luck.

If i should buy only 4 stones, which grids would it be for a new bevel and polishing. My EU dealer only has Naniwa professional stones that are 20mm thick. My dovo silver steel straight razor is sitting too long in the closet unused and dull.
great video Lynn I try to learn as much as I can! I got a 5/8 quarter hollow working great, but I just can't get an 8/8 wedge (likely a near wedge) on a Kamasori working and an 8/8 full hollow. I'm using a 4K/8k Norton, do you recommend perhaps a 1k stone or is there a different technique with a wedge/near wedge and full hollow?

Guilkdp Really hard to say. Depends on the razor. A full or extra hollow may take a bevel on the 4K quickly using the same process. It may take several tries on the 4K with razors that have uneven flattening or heavier grinds.
I've tried your bevel setting technique and stone progression and it worked great on couple of my razors. Although, I've been having issues with a wacker Damascus steel razor. I just can't seem to get it sharp. I thought I had it, but when I got to shaving some of the coarser hair, it just wouldn't cut. On my last attempt, the razor wouldn't even cut some of the fine hair on my arm. Is it harder to hone Damascus razors? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
+Richie Peralta Make sure your bevel is set to start with. That is key. Then try a few extra strokes on your 8K and finishing stones. If you have a microscope, look to make sure the edge is good and the bevel is flat. Have fun.
I love watching your razor videos!! You are very knowledgeable. I have shaved with a straight razor of and on, but I really want to do it full time. Hey Lynn.. All I have is a 1k 6k stone.. Can I maintain with the 6k and strop it to finish it or do I need a 12k... Also I recently purchased a dovo and have been told it's not shave ready... How true do you feel that is?? I actually prefer a somewhat more dull blade over a feather sharp razor blade... So maybe my dovo will be perfect for me.. I have learned that people are arrogant when it comes to talking about blades lol.. All I know is that whatever opinion you have is absolutely true for you lol.
Krattle Rattle I personally feel a 6K edge is a little harsh. Normally I recommend at least an 8K. On the Dovo, strop it and give it a try. All the best. 👍
Most razors are ground so that the spine and bevel are sitting on the stone at the same time and the middle of the blade is not on the stone. The bevels are not cut into the razor like knives so no need to lift the spine when honing in my experience.
Do you reset the bevels on all razors that come to you for sharpening no matter the condition? Or how do you determine if the bevel needs to be reset? I ask because I just got an old Friodur that came "shave ready" but was rippn hair so I put it to the 8k and 12k and it seems to be much better. Im wondering, though, if I should reset it with the 1k Naniwa specialty
Whenever I am in doubt regarding a bevel, I will normally just set it and go from there. If your razor is shaving well with the touch up, I would not automatically re-set the bevel.

I have done so, multiple times! Just trying to get some extra clairification! I'll do circles and x's on the 1K and 3K, then just do x strokes on the 6K, 8K and 12K! Thanks again very much for all the info Lynn!
Hi Lynn, got a question for you. I've recently used a Dovo prima klang extra hollow singing straight. I noticed while stropping there's a tiny bend in the toe that catches the strop when stropping. Definitely scratches the strop but no real damage. Would you say this needs a complete bevel set or is there a way to remedy this without having to reset the bevel?
Jules Singh On a Prima Klang you could probably use the 4K. I normally use the 1K. With it being a repair, you may want to use a layer of tape as well.
Mr. Abrams. I have a question about resources. I am looking to find material to look up different manufacturers for some of m vintage Razors. Online is a dead end because it sends me to companies that now produce and sell. One in particular is a W.H. Morley & sons with a raised eagle on the scales and a logo on the blade. It has not been polished or buffed minimal rust with Patina and no damage to the edge or spine. The scales are in really good shape as well. an info or advice on a book I should acquire for future reference
It is. Actually, some razors I get in from new people learning to hone have multiple micro-bevels in them. With a little practice and evening out the pressure of the razor on the stone normally will fix or prevent these.

Tough question. Lots of different stones including naturals out there. Give one a try based on where you want to start. Honing like shaving is something that takes some practice, but after you start becoming successful, you get a better idea of where to go from there. For the last couple of years, I have been pretty much using the Naniwa stones which have proven to be very reliable and consistent for me.
Hey Lynn , I would like your your help. I've trying to re-hone my two straight razors and I can't get them sharp at all. I have a 600grit , 1000grit and 3000/8000grit combo stone. I have no idea where I'm going wrong.
totalanthony I would recommend using either the 600 or 1K to set the bevel. Then lighten up the pressure to when finishing on the 8K you are only using weight of the blade pressure. Good luck.

Hey Lynn, great vid. i have a ralf aust straight razor that i purchased from you about 3 years ago ild say, its duller than a butter knife now i honestly cant remember the last time i shaved with it as ive been using shavettes for convenience. i attempted to refresh it on my king 1k grit stone, did a few x strokes, then moved to a 6k grit stone a few x strokes as well, then finished off on a leather strop block with no abrasive paste. as i said it was duller than a butter knife before the refresh, afterwards it cuts the hair fine but its nowhere near as sharp as it when it came and i noticed a little unevenness on the bevel... would you advise me to try and refresh it again or could i ship it to you? i remember there was an offer to send it to you for a refresh for free when i bought the blade but i had never used it. thanks again

jmall2020 So long as you keep the razor flat with even pressure as you pull and push it across the stone, the entire edge should get sharp unless there is already uneven wear. You might try using a 45 degree angle and see if this helps.
@@LynnSAbrams Thanks for your reply. I've made some crazy beginner mistakes. I kept on seeing small chips in the blade that would not go away, so I pressed harder and then I realized my pressure was creating the chips. Now I have put a slight frown on my edge. I have sort of got it straight through honing tip and toe. It's been a great learning experience. Also it is a vintage blade and I'm seeing a little rust pit damage on bevel but not edge, is that a problem? Thanks.

Hi Lynn Adams, I recently started shaving with a straight razor from the German manufacturer Boker. I have a stainless steel straight razor. I hear alot of people saying that when you buy a straight razor, alot of manufacturers deem it "shave ready" while it isnt really super sharp. Wich stone would be suitable to sharpen it a tad bit more? When I buy a brand new Boker or Dovo, wich naniwa grit would be suitable to sharpen it a bit more? An 8k with a 12k? Or only a 12k? Also I bought a practice straight razor because I would like to learn honing, what are the biggest beginner mistakes? I think Aust razors are the best bang for the buck but you can't go wrong with a Dovo or Boker either.

Most razors are ground so that the spine and bevel are sitting on the stone at the same time and the middle of the blade is not on the stone. The bevels are not cut into the razor like knives so no need to lift the spine when honing in my experience.
Do you reset the bevels on all razors that come to you for sharpening no matter the condition? Or how do you determine if the bevel needs to be reset?
I ask because I just got an old Friodur that came "shave ready" but was rippn hair so I put it to the 8k and 12k and it seems to be much better. Im wondering, though, if I should reset it with the 1k Naniwa specialty
Whenever I am in doubt regarding a bevel, I will normally just set it and go from there. If your razor is shaving well with the touch up, I would not automatically re-set the bevel.

Check out my videos on honing with the circle process. I use circles and X strokes on the 5K also and then X strokes only on the 8K and 12K. Have fun.

Lynn, do you think having a 1000 and 8000 is enough, or is an intermediate needed?
+jeffrx In my opinion, an intermediate stone would be best. My preference at the moment is a Naniwa Selective 5K.
Hi Lynn, got a question for you. I've recently used a Dovo prima klang extra hollow singing straight. I noticed while stropping there's a tiny bend in the toe that catches the strop when stropping. Definitely scratches the strop but no real damage. Would you say this needs a complete bevel set or is there a way to remedy this without having to reset the bevel?
In my opinion, if you go into the bevel or edge to repair the bend or ding, then I would reset the entire bevel.

On a Prima Klang you could probably use the 4K. I normally use the 1K. With it being a repair, you may want to use a layer of tape as well.
Mr. Abrams. I have a question about resources. I am looking to find material to look up different manufacturers for some of m vintage Razors. Online is a dead end because it sends me to companies that now produce and sell. One in particular is a W.H. Morley & sons with a raised eagle on the scales and a logo on the blade. It has not been polished or buffed minimal rust with Patina and no damage to the edge or spine. The scales are in really good shape as well. an info or advice on a book I should acquire for future reference

Great video! Can I ask what you meant by a double bevel? Is that like an accidental mirco-bevel?
It is. Actually, some razors I get in from new people learning to hone have multiple micro-bevels in them. With a little practice and evening out the pressure of the razor on the stone normally will fix or prevent these.

Tough question. Lots of different stones including naturals out there. Give one a try based on where you want to start. Honing like shaving is something that takes some practice, but after you start becoming successful, you get a better idea of where to go from there. For the last couple of years, I have been pretty much using the Naniwa stones which have proven to be very reliable and consistent for me.

Hey Lynn , I would like your your help. I've trying to re-hone my two straight razors and I can't get them sharp at all. I have a 600grit , 1000grit and 3000/8000grit combo stone. I have no idea where I'm going wrong.
totalanthony I would recommend using either the 600 or 1K to set the bevel. Then lighten up the pressure to when finishing on the 8K you are only using weight of the blade pressure. Good luck.

Hey Lynn, great vid. i have a ralf aust straight razor that i purchased from you about 3 years ago ild say, its duller than a butter knife now i honestly cant remember the last time i shaved with it as ive been using shavettes for convenience. i attempted to refresh it on my king 1k grit stone, did a few x strokes, then moved to a 6k grit stone a few x strokes as well, then finished off on a leather strop block with no abrasive paste. as i said it was duller than a butter knife before the refresh, afterwards it cuts the hair fine but its nowhere near as sharp as it when it came and i noticed a little unevenness on the bevel... would you advise me to try and refresh it again or could i ship it to you? i remember there was an offer to send it to you for a refresh for free when i bought the blade but i had never used it. thanks again

Hello Lynn. When sharpening my razor I seem to have areas on the tip and heel that dont want to sharpen. Will those eventually grind down with time?
jmall2020 So long as you keep the razor flat with even pressure as you pull and push it across the stone, the entire edge should get sharp unless there is already uneven wear. You might try using a 45 degree angle and see if this helps.

The 800 should be fine. Watch your pressure. No slurry stone needed imo.
@@LynnSAbrams Thanks for your reply. I've made some crazy beginner mistakes. I kept on seeing small chips in the blade that would not go away, so I pressed harder and then I realized my pressure was creating the chips. Now I have put a slight frown on my edge. I have sort of got it straight through honing tip and toe. It's been a great learning experience. Also it is a vintage blade and I'm seeing a little rust pit damage on bevel but not edge, is that a problem? Thanks.

Hi Lynn Adams, I recently started shaving with a straight razor from the German manufacturer Boker. I have a stainless steel straight razor. I hear alot of people saying that when you buy a straight razor, alot of manufacturers deem it "shave ready" while it isnt really super sharp. Wich stone would be suitable to sharpen it a tad bit more? When I buy a brand new Boker or Dovo, wich naniwa grit would be suitable to sharpen it a bit more? An 8k with a 12k? Or only a 12k? Also I bought a practice straight razor because I would like to learn honing, what are the biggest beginner mistakes? I red alot about frowns and smiles on the edge, or that the edge of the blade is not straight, what are some good tips for a beginner who wants to learn honing?
