  • Today we finally made it to Germany where I will get to see my family for the first time since 5 1/2 years ago. This will also be the first time that Gift meets my family in person. My first day is bittersweet as so many things have changed and Germany is not the place I remember it being. Join me while I take you for a little trip down memory lane.
Thank you for watching. Please like, share and subscribe. Follow us on Instagram at snow.gift and send a private message on our Face Book page at Thai Girl Gift & Foreigner Joe.

Wow Joe that was some huge base that you worked in during the early days of your Army career! The only thing I can equate it with is USAF Mildenhall and Lakenheath in Suffolk, not too far from where I used to live. Great to be able to get into your old quarters for one last look before it is lost forever. I always have mixed emotions whenever I go back to my old haunts and see all the changes, not always for the better. How great to be able introduce Gift to your family and to spend some time with them. God Bless you all 😀❤🙏

I love this video. It brought back so many fond memories. Hanau was my first duty station. I was there from 1982 to 1984. My barrack was on Hutier kaserne. Your mentioning of all those familiar names like Pioneer, Skyland Club, Fliegerhorst and my favorite Lamboy Strasse as well as few others were like music to my ears. I will watch it a few more times just To reminisce.

It must have been quite emotional to meet up with your family and then revisit where you once lived and worked, to see how it has changed! i have seen videos of the airbase where I served in Germany, everything is still there but nature is slowly reclaiming the land back - so sad to see compared to when I was there. Enjoy the rest of your tour and time in Germany! 👍😃

Hello Gift & Joe! Good tips to know. Was stationed in Frankfurt Germany during '70-'71 for the US Army at Drake Kaserne, 3rd Armored Division HQs. Participated in the Reforger I joint military exercise with the US Army and German Army. Our Cold War Mission Statement was to defend the Fulda Gap, a route that would allow Soviet forces to take over Europe. Watched the ping pong ball drop with my number on TV; drafted and entered military service May 12,1970. Traipsing down memory lane brings back cherished memories, but Father Time doesn't stand still or stop. Good for you reuniting with family, making more memories with Gift meeting them too.

Òur house is about 15 minutes from the Hanau area...
While stationed in Germany (many places to include Frankfurt, Schwabstadl near Landsberg am Lech, Gunzberg, Pirmasens, and Heidelberg to mention a few) over 25 years I grew to love the country...
Seeing everything and the changes really touches the old heart strings...
Both my daughters and the 6 grandkids all live there still today...
Nice you are able to get back there...Lots of changes but still a very nice place to live (if expensive)...
Enjoy your time, you've got a great family, Joe...I'm sure Gift is enjoying too!

Great video! One thing you can count on, is change. I left Hahn AB in 86, and visited in 2010 & 2012, and the base was a commercial airport. The one thing that hadn’t changed was how nice and friendly the local residents were. One shopkeeper even called up my landlord(unfortunately she wasn’t home, but I got Mail from her later). So the other thing that didn’t change is everyone in a small German village knew everyone else’s business.

I don’t have any idea if anything is left or if I would even recognize anything but would love to go see!

i was at Hutier '84-'86. it had HHB Divarty & 2-6FA(reflagged to 4-82). Engineer battalion next door at Hessen-Homburg, & 1-40FA across the street from there, at Francois. across Lamboy Strasse from Hutier was a Polizei or Grenschutz facility, where they kept armored vehicles(for when the May Day protestors got frisky in front of Pioneer, on the way from NUKEM to downtown).
at 8:15, where you said it's new, my daughter went to a small kindergarten; she's 42 now. that road was my way to work.
Fliegerhorst was also home to a Lance rocket battalion(& special storage facility).

The Electric Cowboy is where I met Sabine. Oct 10th 1987. That night I met her it was her, Heike, Sonja and some other chic. You and Sonja were married the other 3 were single and they all 3 met the person they married that night. me and Sabine is the only one still married. WOW nothing is the same there.

The most of the Germans know that:(

Thank you 🙏 Both my sons were born in Germany and yes their mother is German, one of the reasons they stayed in Germany. I also moved a lot during my long career.

90-92 in Wildflecken. Last guy to get shots on a make up day. I walk back knowing were were going to be deployed. Crap tons of work to do. I get back to the unit and 3 privates are standing around a small 13 in black and white tv. I about starting going off and decide to ask sarcastically why they weren't working and said, whatcha doing? And one turned to me and said 5000 Iraqi solders just surrendered. lol Our unit went on to deactivate. I served during peace time, then war, then peace time again.
I tell everyone they heard I was coming and so they threw in the towel.

You never really notice the changes that much when you live there ... go back a few years later and you can barely recognise the place. Happens to us all.

I haven’t seen my family in over 5 years and Gift never been to Europe so for us definitely worth the trip. I agree ☝️ Europe is not how I remember it.
