      OneYardRevolution | Frugal & Sustainable Organic Gardening Thank you, Patrick, it's a puzzle, that's for sure. (The puzzle becomes a jungle, LOL) You are the master planner! Sometimes I wish I could have the whole garden laid out orderly like you do, but you are much more clever than I. Yes, the kitty is my companion.

      stampified Yes, it's a issue I have after living in Manhattan for seven years, to see every tiny space as potential to put something. I constantly have to rein myself in, and the plateau is looking spacious at the moment, but when the Creams take off, it will be another story. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for a new episode soon!

    We did a garden renovation as well--and did a massive seedling plant before heading overseas for vacation. A new start really is working well--we got to design it around the lessons learned and have something so much better than before! I can't wait to see this renovation catch up to real time!

    Great episode Kaye, I love the changes you've made in your garden. It always looks so lovely. I'm in the middle of some makeovers myself (updated garden shed, new plants in, and out with some old), and it's taking a lot of my time, but will be so well worth it when it's done. Take care, Kim

      ***** How's it going now, Kim? Thanks so much for your support! Glad you enjoyed it. Just when I felt like I could settle in and watch the abundance, I'm getting an abundance of PM. UGH. Running defense here.

    • @TheAbledGardener
      @TheAbledGardener 9 лет назад +1

      ***** I ran through the PM in spring when the weather was strange, hot and humid. Now it's settled down and some plants that survived are making a comeback, so all is well. Have a great time in the garden. Gardening is a therapy I can't do without.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад

      ***** I agree, though I just spent 2 hours pulling and selectively cutting PM covered vines and leaves and there is nothing left of my Collective Farm Woman baby watermelons except a half dozen small, leafless melons, I just hope they finish out, and I'm tired of spraying! Thanks!

    I love your garden makeover ~ fabulous! I love the how you looked at all your seedlings that still need planting. (LOL) I still have about one more tray of peppers to plant, so I'm feeling you. Your lemon tree is beautiful. I have a dwarf lemon tree and maybe someday I'll get lemons too! Happy Gardening...

      Patrick Meehan Thanks so much Patrick! Well, the Back 40 is officially a jungle and it will be a bit of maintenance to keep the viruses at bay to get a crop. We had June gloom every morning or all day for two weeks, and sun finally broke through early on Summer Solstice and has delivered every day since of bright sun all day, wonderful! (Needless to say, I did not make it to Britain in June...)

    Heh, loved your look when you remembered all the seedlings in back of you... I think we all start way more than we can actually plant! Nice to see what you will be planting for this summer! I have a fig in my back yard, started small like yours... now 10+ years later that thing is HUGE!! Gives me way too many figs! Good luck on yours!

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад

      ***** I wonder what I will get. The tree had 5 or 6 figs on it when we planted, so I predict that's all I will get this year. IF the squirrels don't beat me to them. Say, do figs drop their leaves in winter? I forgot to ask. Thanks for watching!

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener 9 лет назад

      ***** Yep, figs drop there leaves in winter here in North Alabama. But, you are in sunny LA, so the question is: Does it get cold enough to frost? I never lived in LA but I don't think it will get cold enough for the figs to drop leaves. Another thought would be, does other kinds of trees drop their leaves? Whatever the other trees do, the fig will probably do the same.

    • @RhondaH
      @RhondaH 9 лет назад

      I think ours drop in the winter... now that you ask I am not sure anymore! LOL It is a weird tree and there always seem to be figs on it so maybe it keeps the leaves? I will have to be more attentive!!

    I'm in Alabama, so the heat starts mid April until October . I didn't do well with my cool weather crops and found out through FB I should plant my cabbages family stuff a lot earlier. I will plant a lot for the Fall to get me through the Winter with fresh greens. But Summer...tomatoes, 19 different kinds, Cukes, 4 kinds, Market More 76, Straight Eights, Lemon, and a wonderful Suyo Long. Cantaloupe, watermelon, Spice Pumpkins, Sweet potaoes, Carrots, Squash and Zucchini, Sugar Snaps peas. 7 kinds of peppers. My beans have struggled in a straw bale garden trial. Lots of herbs. And flowers for me and the bees. I really enjoy your videos. Itz nice to see other people's gardens.

      I am in NE Alabama. It's a little town called Centre. I haven't figured how to transfer pictures from my phone onto FB. I will share photos from my garden when I figure it out, lol. I made an arch with a cattle panel over 1 bed to grow my cukes and cantaloupe. I love the access it gives me to the fruit. I have 144 sq. ft. of raised beds. I am also trying straw bale gardening with 10 bales.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад

      Carrie B. If you have a smart phone, you should be able to select a photo, and there will be a little icon that indicates how you want to share it, click on that you will get options to email, text or share to FB (if you have an FB account). You should be able to check more than one photo to share in one post, but if you want to just try one first to see if it works, you can do that. Once it's in your FB photos, you should be able to select it and share it in a post on Late Bloomer Show. Let me know if you try. I'd love to see a photo of that arch! You are doing a lot, and I'd love to hear of your progress! Thanks for watching!

    I enjoyed the episode. I just took my tomatoes plant out. The corn was not a great crop this year, be caused of the tornado that passed close by and the days of rain. I still have some squash , field peas and second crop of corn. The eggplant is still baring. Looking forward to your soil episode. Gene

      Oh, thank you so much! What a great comment for this dreary cold wet day (though I'm not complaining about the rain!). I will try but I am committed to raising the money for a season 6, and not spending my retirement check anymore :) We shall see if I am successful. I have been working 40-60 hours a week for five years now with no income the last three, and I haven't yet been able to grow my audience to a sustainable level, which is why I started the vlog and am teaching myself to edit. But, I have only so much energy and hours in the day. We shall see. Please keep recommending! Many thanks!

    I just love your show!! I'm growing a lot of tomatoes from seed in my garden this year and have run into so many problems! Odd growth, disease, aphids, leaf footed nymphs/stink bugs, over watering/under watering... It's very frustrating because my last couple of years have resulted in tremendous results, and this year I expanded my garden and am getting more frustration in the tomato department (everything else is doing well so far...). Erg! So it doesn't matter how large or small your garden is. It's how you use it. And whether nature goes against your wishes! Hahaha!

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад

      ArmindaHeart Have you watched my tomato series from last year? You will see I had every problem. Expanding your garden stretched your observation time and that's when problems take over. I know the feeling! Next year, you will get back on an even keel. About nature, yes, it will become more and more unpredictable and we will have to be creative problem solvers to grow our own food in future, but our health and the biodiversity depends on us.

    Charming as always Kaye! I don't really have much of a yard (yes, even less than you.) I also had surgery recently so had to peel back planting but still managed to seed tomatoes, cucumbers (for pickling which I discovered last year--such a great way to preserve the fruit) 3 hot pepper plants, one sweet pepper plant, wax beans, and couple of brassicas. I plan to keep seeding stuff through-out the summer, last year a late crop of spinach lasted all winter on my balcony.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад

      omfug Thanks so much! I'm sorry to hear about the surgery and hope you completely recover and can get after your garden the way you want to. I will only harvest a few cucumbers this year with 3 plants in pots, can you pickle 3 cucumbers or is that a waste of time? Let me know today since I picked them this AM! Thanks!

    • @omfug7148
      @omfug7148 9 лет назад +1

      I highly suggest doing a quick pickle Kaye, there are tons of recipes on youtube for refrigerator pickles, these are the best pickles you will ever eat especially if you are growing your own dill! 3 pickles are not too few.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад

      omfug Unfortunately, my dill did not come up this year. And it is not that fresh when you get it in the store. I'll check recipes, though. Thanks so much! I put 3 in frig last night and have at least 2 more to harvest this morning. Thanks again!

    • @omfug7148
      @omfug7148 9 лет назад +1

      Kaye, I have had trouble with dill germination in the past, last year I sewed seeds in 1 gallon containers and the germination rate was great--go figure. What I do now is to freeze my dill fronds, they freeze well with no loss of taste IMO. Of course I am a total dill head, I love the stuff (must be my European peasant genes exerting themselves, hehe.) Of course, if you don't have dill fennel works well also, as do just dill seeds. I also like to stick a hot pepper in with my pickles for extra pizzazz.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад

      omfug That's a great idea, I have more seeds and think I'll plant some in a container. However the seeds are on a dried branch and I did not seal them in a bag. Does that make a difference with germination?

    Just my opinion here, but every time I see your fence against the side walk I think you could stick a single grape vine there and get a nice yield from that space.

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад +1

      The Autonomous Gardener Just when you wrote this, I had finally planted my potted grapevine in the back of the house. There's a huge trellis out back. It just needs to grow about 8 feet and get in the sun, and it will be great. As far as this fence goes, I've learned it's a GREAT place for brown widow spiders to lay their eggs. UGH, so I really need to keep that clear of vines so I can get at them.

    Kay, This was a great episode. I'm curious for the reasons for your garden shuffle. Was it to make it flow better or were you rotating the garden beds?
    I'm growing cauliflower for the first time this year. I have learned that the bed I put the cucumbers into is most likely too shaded for it to do well..But we shall see. I have masses of tomatoes..because that's the reason for the garden. My green onions are planted on the edges of all my raised beds. I have a few eggplants..but they are quite unhappy and I don't know if they will make it. I have a bed of bush beans. I have potatoes red and yellow planted into containers. I have a sweet potato growing in a container in my cold green house and oh I hope it works even though I'm in Washington State, far from traditional sweet tater country! I have lettuce, peppers, spinach and chard also in containers...Not all of which are happy. But I spotted my very first zucchini growing and it made me want to shout for joy! I'm so glad that you'll understand that feeling! Have a wonderful day!

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад

      Dolly Perry No, the flow is pretty established now, unless I start creating more work for myself. There are structural things I'd like to do, but, keeping up with my appetite to plant seeds and see them through their life span, and making Late Bloomer, is all the energy and time I have. I did decide to reduce my corn imprint because what does 48 square feet of corn give you? Just a few cobs, so I decided I could get much more out of the back 40. All I know about sweet potatoes is the roots like to stay warm, whereas regular potatoes want to stay cool. I know the feeling, when I see something for the first time, there is an explosion of joy, enough to make your day! Thanks so much for watching, and stay tuned to the next episode coming soon.

    I had bought a Meyer lemon tree but now it's not flowering or growing lemons? Am I doing something wrong...it's still potted? Any advice for a fellow gardener

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  9 лет назад +1

      Beru -Chan Sometimes it takes a year or two to get going. If it is an ever-bearing lemon tree and it looks healthy, nice and green, just be patient. If it looks sickly, leaves falling off or yellow, then you must do something to make it healthier. It has to have at least 6 hours of direct sun every day to produce. Remember to feed it on a regular basis in a pot, follow directions on a good organic liquid plant food, and also Maxi-cal, follow directions, plus they need iron, follow directions. Water, feed, water, in that order to drive the nutrient down to the roots, then let it completely dry out before rewatering. Be careful about letting the pot sit in a lid with water standing. Citrus don't like their roots to stand in water. Make sure your potting mix is well-draining. You can also spray with compost tea and epsom salt (1 tablespoon per gallon of liquid). Look at leaves for bugs, if leaves are misshapen, you could have aphids or leaf miner. Good luck!
