thank you sir youre a gentleman and a scholar! I was pounding my head against my keyboard wondering why my acoustic wasnt being picked up only to find out its missing its battery!! Switched to my Les Paul and worked like a charm thanks again!
For anyone using a UAD Apollo or similar this may be helpful.... My Apollo 8 interface has up to 32 input channels. In a DAW you can set the required input channels in your channel strip before recording, but here's how I got it working with Audacity. The example I will use is my stereo Eurorack setup goes into channels 7 & 8 of the Apollo, so to record it into Audacity, in that example, I need to set the Recording Channels to "8". Audacity then records 8 channels, the first six of which are empty but 7 & 8 contain the audio. In the track options after recording you then set the panning to Left for channel 7 (in my example) and right for channel 8. Then just delete the six empty channels and you have your stereo recording. To record computer audio such as RUclips, etc., I would need to record 20 channels in Audacity and delete the first 18, because the audio from the computer goes into my Apollo on Virtual Channels 1 & 2 which are designated as inputs 19 & 20.
A little confused (a total beginner). I have a MacBook. I'm using a PODtrak mixer to record on. I then transfer the files onto my MacBook and then onto Audacity. Do I need to download the Scarlett mix control?
I have bought M Audi Mtrack solo and use Audacity. I have followed your settings and have set up my mic which is a berenger C1 but my headphones is only picking sound up in one side, yet when plugged into my laptop picks up in both headphones. What am I doing wrong? I want to record audio to make meditation recordings?
Hello Sir. Very nice and informative tutorial video. I have a problem while playing my recorded voice, i can hear the background music i use. Is there anything i can change for the settings? Am using behringer xenyx QX1202 usb mixer and AT2020 Condenser microphone. I hope you can help me with my problem. Thanks a lot and more power
Hi Joe, Great videos...Can you advise me on. I have a Scarlet Solo with 2 inputs that I'm using succesfully in Audacity on the XLR audio Channel. I'm getting a Reface Yamaha Synth soon but will not be using Midi and was wordered if this would work with the Focusrite? One input is XLR on the mic line and 6.3 jack for the instrument line. Any ideas please>
Hi Joe, excellent clear video, thanks. I'm a newbie when it comes to audio interfaces so apologies if this is a dumb question: I've been using Audacity for a while and I'm now considering buying an 8-channel audio interface (e.g. M-Audio M-Track Eight) to record vocal ensembles. I want to record all eight channels separately (not just a stereo mix) so that I can mix them later - will Audacity offer 8 channels as an option when I connect via USB? (I can't test it until I've bought the audio interface but I want to know in advance that I'm buying the right thing).
I'm a beginner and your videos are really helpful. I'm just struggling with 2 microphones set up through and interface (UMC202HD) but it doesn't let me edit them separately and only shows one edit screen to the left that crosses over both layers. Is there a setting I've missed?
Hi Joe. Thanks for the great videos. I had set up Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 with Audacity using USB A and it was working fine for over a year. But, of late I get the message "Hardware not Connected" when I connect the 4i4 on the USB A Port. However, it connects on the USB C Port using an adapter. There seems to be nothing wrong with USB A Port since they are otherwise working fine.
Hi Ajeet, I'm glad the videos are helpful! That's strange. Do you get this outside of Audacity as well? In Scarlett Mix Control? Have you tried another USB-A cable? Otherwise, it'd be something to log with Focusrite support I think.
@@JoeAtClaricast The problem is independent of Audacity. I have tried different DAWs and Cables to no avail. I logged with Focusrite Support Link and after their recommendations did not resolve the issue they have suggested that I raise the ticket with Microsoft (I am using Microsoft Surface Book 2). Anyway, a big Thanks for the prompt response.
Thanks Joe! We are using an audio interface with 3 microphone inputs to record a podcast with 3 persons. Is it possible to have 3 different tracks/inputs in audacity? We can't get this done because we only see 2 channels....
Hi there, no, unfortunately not. The way Audacity works it will only let you record a stereo track and use the two channels for two mics. Reaper is an alternative that is free for 60 days (and very cheap after that), that allows however many inputs your interface has. Cakewalk does too and is free, but is more complex.
Joe I am trying to get my Spark Amp from Positive Grid (it has a built in USB interface) connected to use for recording. I am on Windows 11 64 bit laptop. I cannot get Audacity to record my guitar and when I record with a backing track it records the backing track in the new track and not my guitar. What am I missing here?
I have a behringer x USB and a numark USB DJ mixer to use know the same time because they for different purposes! How do we Marry to audacity when necessary?
Hi Yasmin, yes, there is a way. It's sort of a workaround and it's done by recording to a stereo track. I go over how to do this in part 11 - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html
This is a great resource. Thanks. I have a Peavey Valveking20 MH and it has a USB record out. This I have connected straight to my PC and it records into Audacity thanks to your instruction so far. I will continue the lessons :)
ive upgraded my focusrite driver, and now i dont have any input noise in audacity, output works... and the focusrite input is called analogue focusrite, what it wasnt before.. you know whats the problem?
@@JoeAtClaricast No, my interface not have own software. Well... maybe just a little one with two options: Buffer size and ASIO sample rate. Now I buy extra pre-amplifier. I guess it will be good or maybe I will discover have faulty mic or faulty interface.
Hey bro - I got a new set , would you know why my condenser mic isn’t working ? - I have a audio interface and monitors - they work perfectly- all connected to my pc well, where as - my mic itself is connected to my interface but won’t connect to my computer and won’t work or catch any sound ? You’ve any idea maybe ?
Here's what Audacity say about the three options - manual.audacityteam.org/man/tutorial_selecting_your_recording_device.html. MME is the oldest and most compatible option. It normally works fine for me. DirectSound can potentially give you lower latency if you're having issues with latency using MME.
I need help, whenever I record my electric guitar with an M Audio M Track Solo using Audacity, the recorded sound for some reason becomes lower pitch. I've tried reinstalling the drivers for my audio interface and it DID fix the problem, but only for a short while, the problem with the pitch reappeared after a few recording sessions. I was so confused, I literally didnt change any of the settings, so how did the problem come back?? Any help would be appreciated!
It could be something to do with the sample rate. If the M Track is recording at a sample rate that's different from the sample rate that Audacity is playing back it, the pitch could change. Are you able to set everything to 44.1 kHz across the board and see if that helps?
@@JoeAtClaricast so I was able to set everything to 48 kHz and record accurate sound, for some reason when I manually set the audio interface to 44.1 kHz it just changes back to what it was before - 48 kHz. It sounds ridiculous lol, it's like my gear has a mind of its own. Anyway, setting the audacity project to 48 kHz and both the playback and the recording of my audio interface to 48 kHz worked, so thank you very much! You're my savior :D
Hi Joe! Thanks for the Audacity course. Super helpful. I've just finished the record through an interface and I have a question. I do have a Scarlett 2i2, but since I'm recording my first episode of a podcast in my closet, I only brought in my Samsun Q2U usb microphone to record straight into my laptop to Audacity. I have selected the microphone as my recording "microphone" and the same as the speaker. Is this correct? Also, the speed of the recording is superfast almost overlapping the words even though I'm speaking normally. Are these 2 issues and how do I fix them?
Hi there, happy to help! I'm glad it's been useful. The Q2U is a great option. Yes, you can select the Q2U as the output and input, it means to monitor it you'll need to use the headphone jack on the microphone. How do you mean by overlapping? Does it sound okay once you've played back?
Superb videos my friend. I have a question which I'm hoping you can help me with. I've kind of fixed the latency in Audacity, which by the way, I am new to lol. But I've still got an annoying delay in my headphones when trying to sing to a backing track, its driving me mad. Have you got any idea how I can stop it please ?. My audio interface is a Scarlett 6i6, and Im running a pc with Windows 8. Thanks in advance
Thanks, Pete! What audio host do you have Audacity set to? (WASAPI, DirectSound etc.) Also, in the Scarlett Mix Control, can you change to a lower buffer rate? Are you able to test on another free DAW like Pro Tools First? Do you still get the latency there?
@@JoeAtClaricast Hi Joe, and thanks for your reply. I'm really new to all this to be honest mate, I did used to have cubase a few years ago, but never got very far with it. All I want to do is to record a few tracks, and up to now I'm fighting a losing battle lol. Ideally I'd like a bit of reverb in my headphones while I sing to the track, but thats another story lol.
I've tried all 3 audio hosts, like you advised, but I'm not seeing much difference. Some said something about direct monitoring in mix control, but Ive got no idea what I'm doing. Its all mumbo jumbo to me lol.
Yeah there's some info here on direct monitoring if you have the 3rd gen model - support.focusrite.com/hc/en-gb/articles/360006972599-Direct-Monitoring-on-the-Scarlett-4i4-3rd-Gen. That could be the solution. With the reverb that will only work on a DAW with real time plugins (which Audacity should be getting soon). It might be worth seeing if the issue occurs on another free DAW.
@@JoeAtClaricast Thanks Joe. I ended up sorting it by changing to my Macbook Pro lol, the pc I was using was about 10 years old and pretty slow. I'm now thinking of going back to Cubase.
i have an akai eie, i used itfor about 10 min. and then audacity stopped receivong audio, nothing. i unplogged everything idk what happened. i can hear the mic. through the interface it just doesnt record. what do i do?
Happy to help! I'm not sure, sorry. It's difficult to be sure enough to make an informed recommendation as there are so many factors involved. There's like a way of connecting up the outputs of the Xone to the inputs of the Traktor, but it might be best contacting the retailer as they can make guarantees or offer returns etc.
I'm using the Focusrite 2i2 3rd gen. I was worried at first because I'm running Linux (Zorin OS), and the mfr only has drivers and software for mac and pc. But I plugged it in and it's working well with Audacity so far. Side note: There's a special line of code I put in the terminal and a way to turn off the the interface showing up as a MSD but I don't know if I really had to do all that.
@@JoeAtClaricast well, what I'm thinking about is that I had only plugged the audio interface in directly, and then was exporting on the insane preset. My concern is that I was probably recording into audacity with that piece of equipment at whatever the default rate is, and then exporting using the insane preset... Probably for absolutely no reason! I don't know if that makes sense, but perhaps it will? It won't be an issue anymore, that's for sure! Thanks again
The files from audacity ended up in my documents is that correct or is there some little detail that I missed some other choice that should have been made when I was setting up maybe...any tips or is that correct? I thought that the files from audacity we're supposed to end up in the C
Hi, I'm recording for youtube. I'm not sure whichconnection should go from my audio interface to my laptop. Can't find a manual for Behringer anywhere that explains that.
Hi Joe, really clear explanations thank you. I use the Scarlett 18i8 1st Gen, but the options I get are not the same as you show on your screens about Devices. For recording it says 'Analague 1 = 2 (2-Focusrite Us)' and for Playback it says 'Speakers (2-Focusrite Usb Audi' . I guess the labels have been truncated, but it does not say 'Line In ...' or Line Out...'. Does this mean I have set it up wrong?
Hi there, this was a brilliantly put together video, thank you. Everything was explained clearly and it helped me to set everything up. Just a quick question if I may: I have an Akai MPC 2000XL connected to my audio interface (which is where I make my beats). I want to record each track into Audacity but I don't know which channel setting to use. Would it be mono or stereo? Many thanks!
Hi Muhammad, is the Akai stereo output? Just 2 tracks? You can record in mono or stereo for two tracks using the method I show in this video - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html. Unfortunately, Audacity can't record more than two tracks simultaneously as standard.
Hi, Joe! First of all, thanks for the tutorial videos and valuable tips. I am using a Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 3rd gen, but on Audacity it appears as "Analogue 1 + 2 (2 - Focusrite Us" - exactly like that. Could it be some mismatch error? It is working, but the name does not appear as 18i8. I would also like to know if it is possible to record the other inputs of the interface in Audacity, especially the inputs at the back (5-8). I tried, but I was unable to capture the audio in Audacity. Thanks for listening!
I also have an 18i8 and it's the same for me. It's just the type and name of the driver that it lists it as. I believe it only supports a stereo input so that's all it shows. It's a similar case with some other free DAWS. Presonus Studio One free version for example only lets you record L, R or both. I think it'll only pick up inputs 1 + 2. It might also pick up 3 + 4 and just sum them but I haven't actually tried that. Are you recording a band?
Hi, Joe Crow - The Audio Pro! Thanks for your videos on operating Audacity. They're great for an old fossil like me. I have just ordered a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (3rd gen.) audio interface to use with a Marantz MPM1000 mic for vocal recording as my wife is about to start doing a podcast. I also want to record guitar - miking the amp, and was about to order a Shure SM57 to this end. Is the Focusrite any good for the Shure, as I have read a comment that the pre-amp in the Focusrite series don't increase the signal from the Shure enough to make it worthwhile. Can you please advise? Many thanks in advance!
Hi Rob, I'm glad you asked this. Every single guitar recording that I make in my home studio is made using a Shure SM57 and Scarlett 18i8 (sometimes with an extra mic too). The pre-amps in Scarlett interfaces are more than capable of recording an SM57 at a sufficient signal. Here's a video where I record some electric guitar using this setup - ruclips.net/video/adtZ0nRjU_4/видео.html.
@@JoeAtClaricast my 2 cents..only Gen 1 of the Scarlett suffered. Tons of G1/G2/G3 comparisons. G3 for the win Dead quiet good preamps to push whatever you can throw at it. I prefer ART Tube MP mic preamps. $30 used all day. Tube pre and DI box, 1/4 and XLR in and out. But the Mfr heard buyers and upped the preamp quality in G2 and again in G3. Industry standard for DIY.
No Joy. Audient ID14 on Mac monterey. With ocenaudio I select inputs 1,2, and 11, 12 Those last two are loopback. On the audient mixer, I get reasonable sound levels. But nothing shows on the sound meter on audacity. Setup: Arturia Keylab 88 -> USB -> Mac Mac -> USB -> ID14
So, the thing with the bars and colors, is that something I have to buy? I see others with them. I'm new to xlr and interfaces. Technology is not a subject I grasp easily lol.
Basically, most audio interfaces will have their own unique drivers (except for a few cheap ones that use generic drivers). Some of these drivers offer a control panel with a user interface - like Focusrite interfaces do with MixControl. So it really depends on the interface you're looking at. Most should detail what software/drivers they come with on the manufacturers website. Most good ones should come with at least a basic interface.
@@JoeAtClaricast oh, I bought an audient iD4. I guess that's not a good one.. I'm not seeing that thing you're using. I downloaded the drivers off their website and was able to record last night. Or maybe it does and I just don't know where to find it haha
@@DanielleBaylor It's a good interface :) The software won't be the same though. You don't need the software if you can change the settings elsewhere though. It's more just about making sure what ever software your interface does come with is installed. Which may just be a simple settings application. The manual should detail whatever software it comes with.
@@JoeAtClaricast it should but it came with a pretty basic leaflet. Honestly, I just do voice over work. I don't do any major editing and at most I add background music for personal use. So, I don't really *need* extra features, I just see that thing on everyone's videos so I thought it was something I was supposed to have. I didn't have gain control and all of this with my Fifine usb hehe
@@DanielleBaylor It might that the mixer software is only for the bigger versions. Ultimately though, if it works and you have all the controls that you need on the hardware, you should be good to go :)
Hello Joe, thanks for your vids. Very helpful for a newbie like me. I bought a bundle of equipment. A Rode NT1A mic and I have U22XT interface. Im planning to do voiceovers in the future. (if I can work the equipment :) I installed the CD but the input/output panel looks very different to the one you have. Is it because I'm using MAC? Also I keep getting a message of Error opening recording device. It also doesn't seem to be picking up any sound from my mic. any suggestions? Thanks J
Hi Julia, I'm glad the videos have been helping! That sounds great. Very nice mic. I have a Focusrite interface, so the software will be different for the U22XT. It should have similar functions, ideally. It's difficult to troubleshoot the error as there are so many combinations of gear and Audacity doesn't play nice with every interface. You could try looking on the manufacturer website to see if there are any new drivers from that of the CD. Also, if you're using a Mac and have Garageband installed, you could test on there to see if it's the interface that isn't working.
Hey there, I'm really struggling to get my RODE Al-1 audio interface working with audacity. I did everything as you explained it but everytime I want to record something over another track the red recording line stops and nothing works. It only happens when input and output are on RODE AL-1 (if f.e. I use my Laptop as mic input microphone and my interface headphones as my output it works) I don't understand it especially since it had been working in the past. My interface had the latest update and I have my settings just as everyone in the internet explains. Im totally frustrated :/ Do you have any solutions? Cheers in advance, Lilli
Hi Lilli, that sounds really irritating for you. It can be hard to pinpoint what the issue is when a certain interface doesn't work with Audacity. Can you record on any other software? For example if you download the free trial of another DAW, like Reaper, can you record onto that?
Hello, ty for the tutorial...I have a Focusrite as well yet I'm not hearing playback on Audacity. Btw I'll be recording for voice overs/narrations. Here's what I have so far on Audacity : MME ... Analogue 1 + 2 (Focusrite USB Audio) ..... Mono ..... Speakers (Focusrite USB Audio) . If I change the speakers to: Speaker Realtek (R) Audio I can hear but just double checking on the settings. Appreciate It.
Audacity is only showing one in & out option for my Yamaha AG06 USB Mixer: Line(4- AG06/AG03). It won't budge when record is pressed, I did manage to record into Audacity before but forgot the settings, audio is coming in because it's visible in the Yamaha software. I notice you have Voicemeeter, so do I but don't know how to use it.
Hi Previn, does the mixer have a dedicated driver? Has it been installed and is it coming up as an input device? You could try the ASIO4ALL driver if it's not working. It's not surprising that you're only seeing one in and one out. Audacity natively doesn't allow you to set different inputs to different tracks.
I'm using a Behringer UMC22 with Audacity. I haven't installed any drivers but it seems to be working ok. The main problem I have is a small delay between playing a note on a keyboard and hearing the note through the speakers or headphones. I've had the same problem when using a tube preamp as well. I've fixed the recording latency but can't seem to fix the playback. Any ideas?!
Yeah, the Behringer interfaces use generic ASIO drivers. This does make them easier to set up, but they don't always have the best latency. The only place you can change it with a Behringer device (as far as I know) is in Audacity under Preference > Devices > Latency > Buffer Length. You can reduce the time in milliseconds. If you reduce if too low though, the system may not be able to to handle it and you'll get pops and clicks. It's worth experimenting with though to see if you can get it lower.
@@JoeAtClaricast Hi Joe. Unfortunately changing the buffer length had no effect at all, no matter what value I set. I'm not convinced the UMC interface is communicating properly with Audacity as it's only coming up as a generic USB audio codec in the Recording Devices dropdown menu. When I plug into Mic/Line 1, I get an audio output to the pc but can't get any output from the headphone jack. When I plug into inst 2, I can get output from the headphones but no output to pc. Maybe I need to download the drivers after all?
Hey, happy to help 🙂 If you have an interface with two inputs, you should be able to record both to a stereo track using this method - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html. It's sort of a workaround though, it's not natively supported.
@@JoeAtClaricast In the microphone input connect a device in this case it is the RD8 when I activate recording in audacity I have sound, from what I see in the other input that is XLR I will have to buy a male XLR adapter to plug in 3.5 to be able to connect the other device A TD3 and with that I will carry out tests, your information helped me a lot.
Ahh yeah, I've never tried it with synths. But a jack to XLR cable should work if it needs to be at mic/instrument level (which ever the jack input on the UR12 is). I hope you get it sorted 🙂
Hi, just wondering if anyone is having the same problem as me. So I’m using a Rode NT1-A mic with an audio interface and I keep getting a red arrow when I try to record and it won’t record any audio when I add a backing track. Everything is set up and plugged in and I’ve tried every video out there to solve the issue and nothing has helped. The mic works on its own as one recording channel but when I add another track it won’t record over the backing track. Hopefully that makes sense & any help would be appreciated! Thank you ! :)
Hi Amber, what interface are you using? And when you record the second track, does the transport move and you get a flat line, or it won't even start recording? Can you check if you're using 44.1 kHz sample rate on both Audacity and the audio interface software?
@@JoeAtClaricast Hello! Thanks for your reply. The audio interface I’m using is the Rode AI-1. The transport line doesn’t move at all or start recording anything, it just stays at the beginning of the track almost frozen. And yes it’s set at 44.1kHz on audacity which is also the sample rate on the interface. (Also as of today when I tried again - it’s now giving me the red arrow frozen at the beginning and won’t record a single track let alone with a second recording track alongside)
In the Device Toolbar, are there any other options for Rode? Can you try changing the input device and changing it back to the Rode AI-1? Do you have the latest driver installed? And is it set as the audio device in Windows as well? Sorry - lots of questions! It's just hard to pinpoint. Some audio interfaces just don't play nicely with Audacity. It might be worth trying another software, like the free trial of Reaper or Pro Tools, and seeing if the issue occurs there as well.

I am connected via a focus rite 2i4... the computer recognizes my interface, but it just won't record when Im playing out of the Spotify app. Help.
Hi Jacob, you would need to loop back the interface using Voicemeeter, or the loopback channel if the Focusrite has one. Are you not able to download the audiobook on Spotify, though?
Audacity doesn't natively suppose VST plugins. There are some guides on how to get them to work. Or if you have a plugin that can affect the audio on the way in, that could work.

Question, I have two mono tracks and two stereo. The stereo is the built in microphones on a zoom h5 and the two mono tracks are the two condenser mics I have plugged into it. How the heck do I get each to show up individually in audacity (windows) or is this even possible?
Hi Michael, are you wanting to be able to assign each of the four mics to it's own track? Unfortunately, Audacity doesn't support multitrack recording. The H5 will show up as one input device basically. There is a workaround that allows you two record multiple mono tracks by using stereo tracks, which I go over in this video - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html But natively, it's not supported. You'd need to use another DAW that allows you to select input per track.
I was trying to add a picture to show what I'm about to try to explain. But I guess I'm not able to. I spent years using Sonar 8 Producer edition. They stopped making it in the years I was dealing with severe health issues. I knew that one inside and out.. but since I can't find that program again I have been stuck trying to figure out new programs. I had used pro tools in other studios years ago but when I tried using it this time.. it wasn't my friend lol.. I got error messages. I've talked to someone in a similar situation that said audacity was pretty easy to record with. I imported my background track and made a new empty track for my vocals but when I pushed record it gave me a error message again. I'm going through videoes trying to understand what I need to fix.. my error code says -9999 unanticipated host error. I send the report.. but maybe you can tell me what to correct. If you can that would be awesome. Thank you.
Using the M Track Duo. Audacity won't let me record more than 1 single layer when I have the interface selected as both the input and output. If I try to record another layer it won't let me. It will if I have interface selected for input and some other audio device like PC speaker selected as output. Anyone know how to fix? Really frustrating.
Hey there, if you want to multitrack 2 tracks simultaneously you'll need to set the input as Stereo. It's a workaround - unfortunately Audacity doesn't have native multitracking.
Joe, I’m having an issue where Audiacity is not recognizing the second mic that I have running through my EVO8 interface. I’ve selected the EVO input for mic 1/2, so would expect it to capture both microphones. Both mics are being registered by my EVO mixer and can hear audio through my headphones for both mics. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Hi there, it might be worth Googling the specific model of interface + Audacity. There are some interfaces that Audacity just doesn't seem to like. Are you recording to two tracks? Have you seen this part on multitracking? ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html
I have the scarlet 8i6 3rd gen but I only see inputs 1 and 2 available. any idea how I can get Audacity to record from other inputs? (3-4) (5-6) thanks
Unfortunately Audacity can't pick up multiple inputs like most paid DAWs can. In this part of the series I go over the workaround to record two inputs - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html - but it won't let you record simultaneously from more than two.
@@JoeAtClaricast thanks for the reply. I am not trying to record more than 2 inputs at a time but rather I am simply trying to select a different pair of inputs. All I seem to be able to access in Audacity are inputs 1 and 2 but I want to use say 3 and 4
Hi William, this is what Audacity says on this - "Channel selection: You cannot select exactly which channels are used - Audacity will simply use the first ones it finds. You may need to increase the number of recording channels in Audacity preferences (possibly to the maximum supported by the device, even though you are only recording a subset of them), until all you want are included. This may mean having to delete silent tracks after recording. Some audio interfaces however will display a "Multi" device. Selecting this as recording device in Audacity should let you record all the channels at once automatically." (manual.audacityteam.org/man/multi_channel_recording.html)

@@liviaontheroad Hmm. It's quite hard to tell without being there but I'm just thinking of the signal chain from start to finish. When monitoring the incoming signal on the Focusrite, is the signal light coming on solid? Can you open up MixControl and check what level it's peaking at?
Bit of a different issue I'm having.. When I record a mix, the recording when played back is around 7% slower. Changing the project rate doesn't help, have to adjust the speed with the effect. I'm using the M-Audio Air 192/6 with audacitys project rate at 48000, MME and line 1 Also I am using an rca to trs cable into one channel of the interface which is only receiving 1 channel of audio, would using an rca to x2 tr/trs enable two channel recording? Thanks
This sounds like a sample rate thing. What is the M-Audio set at in terms of sample rate? And what is Window set at? I would just set everything at 44.1 kHz and test. What are you recording? RCA has one connector for each of the two channels, yeah.
@@JoeAtClaricast ah! Everything was set to 48000 including Windows but Windows was 24 bit and audacity was recording 32 bit so I set them to the same and that seems to have worked (didn't change anything else). I didn't even think to check windows settings :s thanks! Its a dj mix coming out the L&R rca channels of a korg km-402 going to one trs, which I thought would be fine since rca cables just have two mono outputs (I thought), then I would just copy the rec to left and right. Is that improper? Really appreciate the response man!
Hi, I want to set up the M-audio solo interface with the AT2020 condenser mic. I downloaded the driver for it and audacity and followed the steps you showed but for some reason I am not seeing the microphone as an option to record. It is saying "Line 1/2 M-track solo and duo"... (the interface) in the devices section and in the speakers there is only an option for the interface and my computer speakers. I am not seeing the mic anywhere. Can you help? thank you
Have you tried downloading another free DAW like Reaper or Cakewalk and testing it on there? Just to see if it's Audacity that's the issue or the driver/interface.
@@JoeAtClaricast I think I might have got it to work. It shows the interface in the device drop down and in the speakers it shows my computer speakers. I hear a difference plugging the mic in from when it’s not connected. By the way do you have any idea about condenser mics. I am new to all this and I bought all the tools to record violin playing. Does the condenser mic make your voice sound louder when you speak into it or is it just for recording purposes? Thank you. I will try downloading one of those softwares too to see if it’s better than audacity 😊 thanks for the suggestion really helpful
Happy to help and I'm glad it's working. The main differences with dynamic and condenser mics are that condenser mics require power from your interface to work. They're also more sensitive and pick up more of the room sound. In terms of volume I wouldn't worry about that as you can always adjust the gain.
@@JoeAtClaricast thank you so much! I got it to work really well using another software 😊 I think the recording quality might improve if I put some recording foam or something in my room.

Hey, unfortunately, most devices don't work very well in terms of multitracking more than two channels natively in Audacity. I have a 4 channel Focusrite 18i8 and it only allows two channel recording natively as per this video - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html But generally, for multitracking over 2 channels in Audacity, other DAWs do it better. You can try changing the Audio Host to WASAPI and checking Edit > Preferences > Devices > Channels and seeing what the max available is. For me, it's 2. You might find some help here - forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?t=99068.
Hi Joe your videos are so useful, thanks for all the help. I got an M-Audio interface and tried hooking it up with Audacity. It recorded well when there was no backing track, but started trouble when I added the backing track. Without the interface, i.e. recording just with the headphone & mic, it records okay but the moment the interface is connected, the slider/cursor doesn't move ahead at all when I press Shift+R.
Hi Suresh, I'm glad they're helping :) When you're recording without the interface, are you using a USB mic? Are you plugging an XLR connected mic into the interface?
Hi, I have the rode NT1 with the AI audio interface. I'm on windows 10. When I set the sound on my computer to go through my microphone and press record. The bar on audacity just goes red and won't move. Any idea on how to fix this?
As in the input level shoots up to the top and stays there? Can you hear anything? Does it record noise or anything? It sounds like some kind of feedback loop.
@@JoeAtClaricast Thanks for your reply Joe! it doesn't seem to pick up any sound. I can hear it through my headphones. But audacity doesn't seem to hear anything. Very helpful, I was gonna buy an interface until you said USB mics have them built in. I looked it up and my mic has one built in. Thank you very much.
No worries! An audio interface & XLR combo is more flexible and can get you better audio quality. But if you already have a USB mic that works, that makes things easier.
Hi thank you for the video I’m having an issue where I can’t hear audio on tracks when going through my interface. I have a focusrite Scarlett solo interface/ mic and for some reason when I record I can hear myself in my headphones and I can physically see the frequency waves on the track but when I play back I can’t hear anything though my headphones which are plugged into my interface but will play through the computer speakers if I change the playback device. Track is not muted and volume is up my playback is set to “Speakers (focusrite USB Audio) “Also everything was working fine at first and then I deleted a track and recorded again one time and now I can’t hear anything play back though my headphones :( (ps sorry for the novel)
No worries, that's really annoying for you. Are the speakers not going through the interface then? Do the headphones playback through the interface outside of Audacity?
Is there any other software that I can use because nothing, nothing is fixing the problem here. I've tried all of these solutions and I can neither hear my playback nor record using my usb microphone. I've even uninstalled/reinstalled. Nothing works.
not working :/ It used to work, but about one month ago it stopped working with Cubase. Audacity still records from all other sources, but not from Cubase, and I don't understand WHY and WHAT happened. I don't even see Cubase in Windows Sound Mixer.
Hi Simon, it depends on the interface. Typically if you go to the manufacturers website (whoever makes your interface) or just search the manufacturer and 'drivers' you should find them.

Are the speakers plugged into L and R main outs? Have the speakers and cables been tested on another system? How come you need speakers instead of headphones, wouldn't the mic pick up bleed for the narration?
Thanks for all your videos Joe, very generous sharing of knowledge - you are an excellent communicator and teacher. I"ll be working through all your videos, not just about audacity but that was how I found your channel. Many thanks
From Audacity - "The ASIO technology was developed by German company Steinberg and is protected by a licensing agreement which prevents redistribution of its source code. Audacity, as an open source program licensed under the GPL, is therefore currently unable to support ASIO, despite being ASIO-capable (providing the user's sound device is similarly capable)." There are workarounds I believe but it's not native.

It’s a 8 channel interface and I found out that channels 7 and 8 no longer work for some reason. I recorded drums using mic cables and my drum mics and it recorded perfectly. Hooked my amp up using guitar cables and nothing.
I use digidesign interface. Only using audacity for the free auto tune. Antares doesn’t work without winning the Olympics of going through hoops. Only downside to pro tools 🤦♂️

Your Audacity course is exactly what I needed . .
You explain things very well.
Can't thank you enough.

Ahh right. That's a pain. Is it only on the Surface Book? So hard to trouble shoot these things sometimes!
If you have two microphones connected to the audio interface....would you be able to have a channel for each mic so you can edit each one seperatly?
Hi Yasmin, yes, there is a way. It's sort of a workaround and it's done by recording to a stereo track. I go over how to do this in part 11 - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html
This is a great resource. Thanks.

I believe the U-PHORIA interfaces use the 'AISO4ALL' driver. Check on the Behringer website and it should show you where to download the right driver.
is there quality difference choosing between mme and direct sound with an audio interface? 🤔

With the reverb that will only work on a DAW with real time plugins (which Audacity should be getting soon). It might be worth seeing if the issue occurs on another free DAW.

Just a quick question if I may: I have an Akai MPC 2000XL connected to my audio interface (which is where I make my beats). I want to record each track into Audacity but I don't know which channel setting to use. Would it be mono or stereo? Many thanks!
Hi Muhammad, is the Akai stereo output? Just 2 tracks? You can record in mono or stereo for two tracks using the method I show in this video - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html. Unfortunately, Audacity can't record more than two tracks simultaneously as standard.

@@JoeAtClaricast thanks buddy
Hallo, unfortunately, this is not working for me. I really do not know why. You have an other option? thank you
It may be up and running audio Joe thanks I'll check it tomorrow
Hope it works for you!
Setup: Arturia Keylab 88 -> USB -> Mac
Mac -> USB -> ID14
I have tried to record without an audio interface. The audio is poor without the interface. Have a Focusrite solo. Works great.
Yeah I can imagine. You need those pre-amps. And Focusrite interfaces have some good ones for the price.
Does the Focusrite work with Audacity. Do I have to build ASIO?
Hey there,
I'm really struggling to get my RODE Al-1 audio interface working with audacity.

@@JoeAtClaricast I noticed that I needed to plug in a speaker to my interface for it to work
Audacity is only showing one in & out option for my Yamaha AG06 USB Mixer: Line(4- AG06/AG03).
Audacity natively doesn't allow you to set different inputs to different tracks.
thanks ...im up and running because of you!!
Nice one! I'm glad it's all working for you.
@@JoeAtClaricast Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I was wondering if the Buffer Length was the culprit but wasn't sure. I'll give it a shot!
@@Boltchkoff Would be good to know how you get on :)
@@Boltchkoff Hmm... Do you have the ASIO4ALL driver? Or is it literally just generic/Windows that is showing?

Do you know why I don't have the device toolbar where u mentioned in 5:38?
Hi there, do you have the latest version of Audacity? They've moved some of the toolbars around. You can access everything through Preferences though.
Hello, thanks for the tutorial it helped me a lot but one question can I record in stereo directly with an interface and audiocity?
Hey, happy to help 🙂 If you have an interface with two inputs, you should be able to record both to a stereo track using this method - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html. It's sort of a workaround though, it's not natively supported.
@@JoeAtClaricast Ok Thanks after watching the video I think I'll have to sell the one I have a UR12 and buy one with two inputs.😀
It might work with the XLR and the jack input of the UR12. What happens if you plug something into both and record to stereo?
It might be worth trying another software, like the free trial of Reaper or Pro Tools, and seeing if the issue occurs there as well.
hi Joe
I'm using the Scarlett 8i6 3rd gen (which I love) but when following your instructions I can record my mic but not music - audacity isn't recognising that the music is being played. I've set everything to go through the interface but it still won't pick up music being played - can you help? Huge thanks in advance x
Hi Susie, where is the music playing from? Have you plugged something into the interface, or is it playing from your PC?
I am trying to record some Spotify audiobooks for long distance driving, but audacity will not record the sound from Spotify, nor should the green fader....it will however pickup the MacBook microphone, and thusly record.
When we add a music track ...the mic 🎤 input is not recording...any help??
Can you use Audacity with software amp sims?
Audacity doesn't natively suppose VST plugins. There are some guides on how to get them to work. Or if you have a plugin that can affect the audio on the way in, that could work.
Im getting recording then choose export ..then save in wav, but there found in my Document not in my C file ...is there some change to make
Yeah, if you go to Preferences > Directories you can change where things save in Audacity 3.0.0 :)

Hey there, what audio interface do you have? Is there anything else listed? No harm in testing it out and hitting record 🙂

There is a workaround that allows you two record multiple mono tracks by using stereo tracks, which I go over in this video - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html
But natively, it's not supported. You'd need to use another DAW that allows you to select input per track.
@@JoeAtClaricast ah thanks for getting back!

Is it possible to record each microphone onto a seperate track?
You can record up to two mics in Audacity if you record them as stereo. There is a video on multitrack recording in this series 🙂

Happy to help and I'm glad it's working. The main differences with dynamic and condenser mics are that condenser mics require power from your interface to work. They're also more sensitive and pick up more of the room sound. In terms of volume I wouldn't worry about that as you can always adjust the gain.

Hey, unfortunately, most devices don't work very well in terms of multitracking more than two channels natively in Audacity. I have a 4 channel Focusrite 18i8 and it only allows two channel recording natively as per this video - ruclips.net/video/Dgo3TInL3eM/видео.html
But generally, for multitracking over 2 channels in Audacity, other DAWs do it better. You can try changing the Audio Host to WASAPI and checking Edit > Preferences > Devices > Channels and seeing what the max available is. For me, it's 2.
