Carb strip & clean - 1990 Kawasaki ZZR1100

  • The carbs on the Kawasaki ZZR1100 haven't been serviced in at least 21 years, so they all need to be pulled apart, stripped down, thoroughly cleaned and serviced. It takes a while as there's loads of bits involved, but well worth doing to get the bike running nicely again.

    I love the videos! I bought a ZX-11 new in 1992 and have had the carbs cleaned many times. The bike is mint . The only time it suffers any damage is when its in the shop!!! And last time the carbs cost me $1100! Next time I'll try it my self. Thanks for the videos

    So these carbs have been a nightmare for me! Someone clearly didn't use j.i.s. bits, all "screwed up". I actually broke a carb body going gentle, using proper j.i.s. & technique. I'll take the blame, I did it. These carbs Have been my evil nemesis! Lol. LOVE the vids Quickie. T.Y. I don't believe a more thorough set of video's exists for the Z.X.-11/ Z.Z.R.-1100! These were much needed & wanted video's for The Z.x.-11 community. "C" & "D" models do have some differences, but overall, similar and procedures mostly the same. These are GOLD Quickie! The 11 was becoming a forgotten dinosaur, One damn fast + capable dinosaur!

    Ultrasonic bath was one of my best buys a few years ago, saved me hours of scrubbing and gets into the bits you can't...

    WoW, yep that was nice and clean. I use a liquid paint cutting compound and toothbrush to do the same, and it eats away at the white oxidation formed over time from the alloy, and the only difference is my hands are nice and black, and not clean like yours. LOL. Nice one QB.

    Were you using JIS screwdriver bits on those carbs? The regular Phillips bits eat the JIS screws, especially if they are a bit tight. Only just discovered this myself after years of using the phillips 😅
    Good video btw!

    I have two zx11s in California and an extra set of carbs. The screw you say is missing is missing from all three of my sets of carbs so nthere must be a reason it is missing from the choke mechanism. I have no idea why.

    • @QuickBikes
      @QuickBikes  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, other folks have chipped in with the same comment. Tye Bandit carbs also have this screw missing. Like you, I've got.no.idea why thus is the case, but its officially a thing 😁👍

    What size ultrasonic clean you using👍🏻

  • @roya558
    @roya558 2 года назад +1

    What cleaning solution are you using with the ultrasonic cleaner?
    Thanks for the video, very helpful, as are several of the comments, I actually purchased the extra choke plate screw and nylon washer, guess it will go in the drawer. The missing screw has always bugged me, had several ZX1100's, never noticed it before, and all my later bikes were or are fuel injected big Kawai's.
    I gave the 05 ZZR 1200 I'm working on to my son, he never rode it in 5 years, so I traded my 02 ZRX 1200 to him for this ZZR 1200, and am giving this bike to my ex marine F18 pilot son in law, so he has a bike again.
    The float bowl gaskets sure were pricey though, folks may want to price all the O'rings, and fuel inlet T's prior to disassembly.
    The fuel inlet T's leaked after I had rebuilt and reassembled the carbs, even though I didn't separate or touch them, I would recommend separating the carbs and replacing them when you rebuild the rest of the carbs, as you don't want a fuel leak. There are two of them and they were $28 each, they don't sell the O'rings separately, just the whole fuel T assembly.

    • @roya558
      @roya558 2 года назад

      Also as a side note, the aftermarket rebuild kits and O'rings I got online were either not good quality, or didn't fit at all. Even though this bike is waay easier to work on than my ZX12 was, or my ZX14 is, it's still too much work to use substandard O'rings, and wind up having to pull it apart again and then do it right.
      I dint find aftermarket metric O'rings that were the exact same sizes, and didn't want to risk it with improper O'ring fitments and there's several of them in these carbs.

      The parts washer fluid is just a concentrated engine degrease I found on eBay, just search for McKlords concentrate degrease parts washer...if I can post a pic here I will do 😁

  • @colinculverwell325
    @colinculverwell325 2 года назад +1

    You're not missing a screw, that how they are. Checking parts fiche shows only three. They used that same chain tensioner system on the Gpz1000rx as well with same issues. There is a video somewhere on an rx resto that shows this and what can happen.

    • @QuickBikes
      @QuickBikes  2 года назад +2

      Cheers Colin, a few folks have mentioned the screw and the mod now so I'm going with it. The stock one will go back for now whilst I source a tension tamer 😁👍
      Thanks for checking the parts listing matey 👍

    Are you going to to a carbie sync up sometime???? food for thought.

    • @QuickBikes
      @QuickBikes  2 года назад +2

      Yes matey... and a colour tune to get somewhere close to the right mixture 😁👍

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider 2 года назад

      @@QuickBikes Colour tuning looks cool, but you can just go by the engines reaction to revving the engine. If the rpm floats down it's too rich I think, and if the rpm dips below idle speed it's the opposite, the rpm's should come straight down and instantly settle at idle. If you just screw out the A/F screws to the stock setting you'll probably be fine anyway, unless you change anything in the carbs.

    • @QuickBikes
      @QuickBikes  2 года назад +1

      It'll be set to stock to start off with as that's gonna get it running. I'd be interested to see the colour tune, but ultimately I want to.set it up on a dyno as that's the best way in my book. I just want a healthy running bike that's reliable, so I think it'll be money well spent 😁

    • @HalfdeadRider
      @HalfdeadRider 2 года назад

      @@QuickBikes Definitely the best way to get it as perfect as possible. After quite a few changes to my ZX9r, it's running great, very strong and no bogging, the rpm's do as they should too, but would be nice to get a run on the dyno 👍

    • @QuickBikes
      @QuickBikes  2 года назад +1

      I think you can get it running at least and not too bad, but a dyno tune will just get it right. 😉 😁👍
