I think the ability to diversify the farm is the saving grace for you, it's not just about what you produce via crops or livestock, but also the videos, the books, the merch. Just being an old school farmer isn't financially feasible on a small farm anymore.

You can make a decent profit using a similarly sized farm growing strictly organic. Vegetable gardens, strawberry picking etc. But for that you need employees and weed management is incredibly hard. In terms of money earned for hours worked it's still terrible but it is livable.

Its amusing you write this. Because in my opinion its actually the opposite. The revenue ratio is EASILY 10:1 (if he said it was 100:1 i would actually believe it aswell) between all social media stuff and farm stuff.
The social media stuff is the actual buisness. The farm is just what provides content for the actual buisness.
      And thats just revenue.
This is meant as no slide, i love the content and i genuinely love that they are trying to still make money with the farm. But lets please not kid ourselves (they dont do this either and he is very truthful about this)

Depend what you mean oldschool farmer. SOme people belive selling raw produce is old-school farming, but in Europe it is normal, for farmers make adional produce to get more value out of they produce. Like making cheese, butter or smoked meat or cured meat and having small farm brands. its easy to butcher a big and sell pork to people, but you could also smoke that meat and sell it higher price or even have farmer shop where you sell pies used that smoked meat. Doeing it alone is almost impossible, but if you have family they could help out.

Morgan…I’m a 52 yr old Canadian chick living in Ontario who wishes she could life the life you live but instead is bed bound with incurable CRPS. Your videos let me live vicariously through you….I was a city girl growing up in Toronto who moved to Vancouver island for many years and had a similar life to what you have now. After my marriage broke up and I got sick I came back to Ontario because medical care is easier to access here but I miss my rural life. Other than my 3 teenagers…you give me so much joy with your videos. Seeing you get emotional made me emotional….Im sure you realize how important this channel and your farm are to us. I hope you can make a living from RUclips as long as you can because truly your little farm is a piece of heaven❤❤Happy New year Morgan and Alison🎉🎉(and hugs to all the animals)

I truly wish you good and hopefully a cure and some type of remedy come along in the future for you. My mother was affected by CRPS for 14 years and i could see that it took an heavy toll on her right until her death (unrelated to CRPS).
I wish you a happy new year and hopefully your nervous system will sound the alarm a bit less in 2025. If you need to chat im here for you.

Thank you for blessing my life with your videos. I haven't been as regular a watcher of them in 2024 as I wanted to as life is well, complicated. As I look back on my life this past year, I have what are (to me) more disappointing accomplishments than celebrations, but overall, I came through the year with a lot of building moments where I'm putting together a better foundation to build a spectacular 2025! I have purchased some needed infrastructure and made some home repairs that are already making my life easier and will make it easier to succeed and save time and energy in 2025.
Ok. Enough rambling. I repaired my garage door and automatic garage door opener. I bought a freeze drier and am excited about using it especially for fruit next spring. I'm going through my seed catalogues and planning my purchases now. It's the first time in 10+ years that I've been this much on top of this part of my gardening chores. I've usually struggled to buy plants/seeds for the garden by March/April.
My friends and family have invited me to interact more with them this year and I'm actually less worried about goals and able to slow down and really enjoy being with them in the moment!
I love watching your videos and am looking forward to a fabulous new year of watching your wonderful farming activities in the new year of 2025! From a 73 year young, independent woman. Keep up the great work!!!🙏❤️🙏

In college, I kept my horse at my boyfriend’s grandparents’ farm. They had a bathroom on their back porch with a little framed picture of two little boys and in quotations “If I had a million dollars, I’d farm till it was all gone”
Farming is HARD! I do it as a hobby as I spent 20 plus years in corporate HR. Every year I do small enterprises from growing things. Have had some wild successes and wild failures. There’s so many variables that come into play.

Morgan, a couple of things to keep in mind if you’re having doubts about your strategy:
*In the beginning stages of development, you’re still learning.
*As you redo your budget each year, you will likely do better and better at tracking and allocating your costs, therefore remind yourself that past year’s P&L may not be as accurate as you thought when you first calculated, so year to year comparisons may not be as valid.
*Profits from pork got dragged down by the loss of 25% of your inventory. That one loss would not be as significant as if you had 10 pigs.
*Your beef cattle is still in development and could begin to pay off big in a few short years.
Keep at it! You’re doing great.
    Best wishes,
    A non-farmer, (so what do I know?)

The farm feeds your soul and makes enough to support itself, with your investment of time and labor. The online content pays the bills because you are tremendously talented. Facilitating charitable giving feeds your heart and helps others. I would say you're doing very well! 😊

2024 Has definitely been rough for my family also. It started out with me being sick with covid and the flu on New Year’s Eve. Then my Son got a Job at Tesla and then he was one of those people that got let go. Then he got hired back which was good. In September just one week after his birthday he broke his leg in a bad accident and had surgery and is currently learning how to walk again. Luckily he still has his job. So let’s have a great 2025 for all of us. Happy new year Morgan and family ❤

You are improving SO MUCH!! I’ve been watching for years and the entertainment factor is PRICELESS! Your filmography is better and better, your self-improvement is inspiring, your animal husbandry skills are escalating and your interaction with the animals is heartwarming. If you had never been born, there are hundreds of thousands of us, all over the world, whose lives would be less. So, the farm is the vehicle into the internet and the blessing that you truly are. I will be 67 tomorrow. Decades ago I got a bachelor’s degree in animal sciences and thought I’d be doing what you do for a big fat living. I married a city boy and even though he promised to buy me a farm one day, it never happened. Watching your trials makes me glad I didn’t try it. Even as a young woman I don’t think I’d have been able to physically do all the things you do. I’m glad to live vicariously through you as a retirement hobby. If you quit, I will be devastated, lol. I believe that as time goes on, you will be more and more profitable just because you keep learning every day. And if you give all that profit away, it just means more and more of us will be touched by your wonderful life.

Please don't be hard on yourself. You are not a failure. This was a terrible year for every thing honestly. My friend you took a gamble as alot of us have and lost. You can't predict the weather or what the animals will do or not do. Just know in your heart of hearts it was all done out of love for what you do.

Honestly Morgan, a lot of farmers are in the red regularly, so having a profit overall is a great milestone. The fact that you're testing different facets of income is also a really great asset you have because a lot of conventional farmers are very stuck in tradition (my dad being one of them) which adds to the failure of their operation.
There's so many other ideas you can try out and you have lots of time to try them and find a niche that works for you. You got this

Aww, this is why farming is such a challenge, you were hit by several big loses, and that’s going to sting. Morgan, your heart for the community has been a contribution many souls won’t forget. Like you said, if you were to win the lottery, you would still be living the farm life. So don’t be too hard on yourself, all the other ways you bring home the bacon like RUclips, like your book are just as important to be proud of, so hold that head up high and let’s make 2025 the best year ever! Happy New Year Morgan and Alison!🎉💕👍

I would say that your bills are paid, you have food that you have raised yourself in your freezer, you and your wife experienced some amazing trips this year, and you have a community who is invested in you, both locally and through( social media. You are a blessed man, and things will improve. I remember the huge hit our finances took in the 2008 crash, and how we put more into our retirement that year than it was worth at the beginning of 2009…..that didn’t feel great, but we knew it was a temporary setback.

It's a good thing you still have your actual job of being a content creator to pay the bills. It's really a shame you don't add that revenue into the breakdown. There's a lot of people that look at your videos thinking they're going to jump right into it because you're still going after all this time, but in reality, without the social media income you'd probably have pulled the tent stakes years ago. Small farming is pretty much impossible these days without some supplemental income.

What is hard about tracking value in homesteading/farming, whatever you want to call it, is infrastructure. Every year you add infrastructure to the farm which allows you to do more in the future and adds value to the farm adds value.
It’s good you acknowledge the good you do for the community, you teach others, give value to everyone you interact with and increase your knowledge (and hopefully happiness and gratitude).
Numbers are in the red but in every other area you’re in the black! I appreciate you sharing the realities of farming. I did it for years but had to stop (medical crap) I hope to have a small hobby farm in the near future though. I’m currently looking for land!
Have a wonderful New Year everyone!

To help change your mindset: instead of thinking of this year as the worst year with failures, it was a learning year, and you are now more prepared to move forward. Instead, think of this year as your most impactful year--you have raised tons of money to help people going through a rough time, plus, people are learning through your experiences and will be more successful for it. Happy New Year to you.

Despite the few failures you had, I think that you were very successful. The love and determination you showed all year long for your animals….like how easily you moved your cattle into winter holdings….compared to when you first got them was a joy to me. I so enjoyed the 360 videos, the zen moments, so much more. I got your book in my sock last year for Christmas….loved it! My grandfather as a farmer had many “rough” years, but he loved it just the same. Thank you for making my life enriched. Not everything or success needs to be measured by dollars. May you and your lovely wife have a wonderful New Years.

Hey Morgan, you do help, a lot without knowing.
In the last five years my health has extremely deterioriated due to ME/CFS / long-covid. I'm now bedridden 95% of the day, and watching (or sometimes just listening) to videos is the only thing left that's possible at all.
And yes, your channel is a part of that lifeline, that keeps me going until research gets around to develop better medication.
So thank you, you are NOT wasting your time on that.

Thank you for being honest about how the farm performed vs the value you are able to add to your life and others.
I think your right, being able to do more charity and things similar to that will make things with the farm the best they can be. I 100% support you helping locally, the thing you do so well on here is tell stories. If you do charity for causes further away, I would prefer if you could travel, do interviews, and make the story video you usually make. That very personal story you tell and how you share it is your strong suit, so I think it makes the most sense to work locally and help strengthen the community.
Long term, I think it would be very cool if you could do stories on other local farmers and figure out how to improve conditions for them to stay on brand and tell those deep personal stories. Of course I never want you to take advantage of anyone, only those who are excited to share and want to be heard.
Maybe one day, you could even help rebuild a local struggling farm.

No, full disclosure: I watch them once while fully awake and attentive and put them the on my "good night playlist", bc your voice, your way of telling your stories and simply the thought of you working on the farm have such calming, reassuring qualities, I can not express how appriciative I am. And in awe of your talent as a content creator and farmer, who makes hard things look easy, to have the strenght to be vulnerable in front of us.
