R.I.P. Rene Mathis His death hit almost as hard in Bond's heart than Vesper's. It's sadder when Bond decides to leave him in a garbage dumpster because "he wouldn't care".
no idea why bond took the money from mathis wallet... i mean why wud an agent need money when his agency got billion of dollars budget... wud be nice if anybody could explain... thanks

I have read somewhere that the scene Bond dumps him in garbage bin as characterless scene. Honestly its about perspective, here while he was about to die, he take him into his arms and console him, the talks about forgiving each other... Once he die he dumps him in garbage bin, to me its not characterless, a person should be taken care or shown your respect when he is alive and Bond just did it during mathis final moments. But people nowadays don't do it, they don't even bother about a person, once they die they start telling he was good, great person etc... they are all fake, what matters is what you do when they are alive, and Bond just did it perfectly.
I think deep down Bond didn't really hate Vesper for what she did...I think he hated himself because he couldn't save her in time. After her death it changed him. You can still see her death's affect on him in Skyfall.
Bond's entire attitude towards women is largely predicted on the outcome of his relationship with Vesper. In this regard, her effect can be seen in every Bond film ever made. However, as the Vesper story was only explored in the Craig era, direct references and less conspicuous references are made in every subsequent Bond film since Casino Royale.
We can also see that Bond has evolved and made strong attempts to move on after he sees a video tape labelled ‘Vesper’ in Spectre, which he decides not to watch or investigate further.
Powerful scene - a lot of people think it was disrespectful of Bond to dump him in the dumpster and take his money , but he made it look like a robbery. And he did hold his friend in his friends' last moments. It is his final descent into not caring.
@SuperIllusiveman Fleming has been dead since 1964. And anyways, Faulk's book takes place during the Cold War while this movie is set in 2008. You could pretend this scene came after Devil May Care or recognize that there are several different "Bond universes."
@wfandango I know that Fleming has been dead since then. I also know that on the front cover of DMC it says that Faulk wrote the book as Fleming. In other words, Faulk assumed the role of Fleming in order to continue the story of Bond as Fleming intended. But anyways, all I'm saying is as a guy who likes the Bond novels and seeing a character who has been around since the 50's get offed after two film appearances sucks pretty bad.
@SuperIllusiveman Ian Fleming didnt write that book, it was continuation author sebastian Faulks. And the previous Bond films never really respected their source material now did they?i love the series new direction. Try not to get your feathers ruffled with these things, the movies are great.

this hit me harder than vesper's death. they really should have kept him. he could have been craig's felix. maybe that's just because i like giannini so much.
That's bullshit. I just read Devil My Care, the latest in the Ian Fleming Bond Series, and Mathis is still alive and well. They can't just kill off a major character like that. Whats next, they're going to have Felix Leiter bite the big one in Bond 23?

Scene's emotional to me. Any man who's worth his salt can understand it's important to forgive even after such an emotional turmoil.
Bloody right it is.

Nah, your perspective is BS. Bond dumped him in the trash bro, thats as heartless as it gets. 😂

As I said it's all about perspective, you's is just a DS....
Very heart touching music !

How could you see it in Skyfall? Please elaborate.
OneLife Dental watch that scene in the casino with Severine

"He wouldn't care....."
off Quantums soundtrack it's titled "forgive yourself" by david arnold
Great scene. I love it. You get to see the other side of Bond that isn't always so composed and cold, but actually caring and has emotions.
The background track is beautiful referencing the Vesper track. It’s called “forgive yourself” in the OST.
This one hit me hard...
Bond is a efficient guy. He understood that Vesper could do anything for her love as Bond would do anything for Vesper.

Couldn't have said it better, this scene resonated with me for the same reason

daniel awesome acting as rough man

Mathis R.I.P.
Giannini gave a masterful performance. He's a legend.

when i was waiting for TDKR to start, the bond trailer came on and in the corner it said PG lol
That was probably the rating for the trailer. I really doubt that Skyfall will be anything other than a 12A / PG-13.
yep, I agree

10 years later in Bond 25, you called it.
This aged so well
skyfall is only a PG :-(
A terrible death scene. A poor attempt to turn Bond into Mitch Rapp in a movie that feels more like Jack Ryan than James Bond.
