  • When selling turned pieces Sam factors in when to add embellishments to his work. It is all about selling and how to make that happen.

    Oh Sam, more beautiful and creative work. Love the color, and it does add interest. Best, Bob

    Great tips Sam! I like how you explained the difference between a piece that can benefit from a little extra work and those that really wouldn't benefit from it too much. I have to try that reactive paint, those pieces just plain pop out at you. Excellent work on all of them!

    Great video Sam. While I appreciate all the wood turning videos that you and other fine woodturners are willing to share with us, there are lots and lots of them and it's so refreshing to watch something with a little difference. There are many aspects to wood turning and I think that learning what may sell or not is one that is not covered too much on youtube. It's great to here from people with selling experience giving this kind of info.
    Stu.

      Thanks, selling is a necessary evil. And there are more and more makers out there selling. And, there are many very good artists who are selling and it makes for more competition. Which is a good thing. Thanks Sam

    A very good lesson, those reactive paints sure make a lovely bowl or hollow form valuable.
    Thank you for sharing your ideas and methods Sam!

    Brave enough to talk about the big devil (selling).The lathe has been historically a powerfull production tool (funtional) that needs a further process to make something decorative(carving,painting,sculpting,etc) and even an other inmaterial talent to bringing it into art.Thank you for your sincerity.Angel Ramos

    taking a piece that has been around and modifying it somehow to make it better is very satisfying to me also. I recently took a small maple burl weedpot that I'd had around for 4 years and never sold and turned it into an oriental themed lidded vessel, put a square cut nail on it for the handle and sold it at auction for $70. one of the great characteristics of our journey is that wood is dynamic in a way and if you don't turn away too much you can make something new/more interesting/beautiful...

    Thanks for sharing your insights in embellishment to turnings. Always fun to consider how an embellishment will enhance a project or if it will detract... Sooo many different types of embellishments available today that it makes a decision difficult but still fun. Thanks again for all the effort and time you put into these wonderful videos... BTW...from the looks of your beard, me thinks we're in for a VERY COLD winter! ;>) Safe turning always my friend!!!

    Those faux pots are candy to the eyes , some really nice finishes indeed , you have a really good eye for the abstract.

    Finally, Sam thank you... I really enjoyed this as it was truly informative. I have been watching your video's for sometime, I think some of them were in a school shop :) or I could be wrong, any way How do you find the price between "Art" and functional "Bowl or Platter"?

    • @WYOMINGWOODTURNER
      @WYOMINGWOODTURNER  3 года назад

      That is a great question. For something functional like a bread board, salad bowl or plate I usually just go by the size. You can come up with your own approach or even a formula for arriving at the price. For anything you might consider artwork to me it is a guessing game to some extent. If you (or I) were a well known artist, selling would be easier. But usually I think it is your past experience in selling and what the "market" will bear. Sam

    What is this just a tour of your booth at some trade fair? Never even address pricing for embellishments.
