I'm a little surprised at how the noise gate was used here. A compressor won't "add" noise in itself, it'll simply raise the noise that's already there. If the noise gate is placed at the very start of the chain, it eliminates noise at the source, and the compressor has nothing to raise, so everything will be silent. Plus, you won't get that huh-huh-huh effect at the end of a note. Aside from that, though, a good demo. I'm really interested in this unit for when I get back to gigging. wouldn't it be ironic, if they released it and it was just all the stuff they have already released, because Bea uses them now over his actual amps. ahaha.
The Helix, kemper, axefx, and now this are just insane. It is crazy to think how easy it is to have so many great sounds that you could use in a studio or touring environment. I am just wondering how much better can it get, and yet it keeps getting better.
I have a HR pedal board from its inception 3 yr+ ago and no backup. Really have it dialed in, sounds awesome. But like you I am intrigued in this system, especially at 3.5lbs, huge processing reserve, wifi connectivity (a game changer) and Neural software.
richard kruspe from rammstein once explained it perfectly in an interview, the problem with amp simulations is that the devices cannot reproduce the after swinging of a guitar cab because it requires a lot of cpu power. I think that's exactly that feeling thing that many amp players criticize

Anyone that says it sounds bad it an idiot. Does it sound as good as the kemper or the axefx? Not sure but from this video and that amp model it doesn't seem to. the Friedman amp models on the axefx are insane and have this amazing harmonic feedback (that the real amps also have and) that this model doesn't seem to have at all. The friedman here just sounds like a generic distorted amp. Does it sound good? Yeah sure but amp modellers have sounded good for almost 2 decades ... does it sound accurate (or at least as accurate as the competition)? .. I am not sure.
Never be able to tell in a few minutes of a demo. I use a Headrush and the amps not only sound great but they feel right. You are right about overtones, harmonics, dynamics and pushed compression makes the difference. I look forward to hearing/playing the Quad and hope to get blown away. We live in the best of times.
From a Kemper owner, the tech and UI here is really miles away from Kemper. However, from someone who just wants to plug and play, having someone dial in the profiles for me is really time saving. I’d love a Kemper with this form factor though
Same here, but the captures should have you covered then, but with effects and a UI that actually make sense beyond the amp. With my Kemper I always feel like they got the amp bit right but everything else is such an afterthought.
Based solely on Rabea's SLO capture: I have a Kemper with the Michael Britt SLO profiles. It is my favorite amp and my favorite tone. This QC unit sounds good. Very good, even. Having said that, I heard nothing that makes me want to run out and get this to replace my current gear. Think about this for a second. All of these social media influencers like Rabea, Pete Thorn, Andy Martin, Brett Kingman, et al. Have you ever seen them demo a piece of gear that they did not rave about?
yes screw hyping ad reviewers, but your opinion is also premature, and tipical of the kemper religion followers. As a proud ex kemper user myself, I can say it is hugely overrated.
Most of them won't do videos on things they don't like so take note of the gear they aren't making videos about, that's the stuff that should probably be avoided.
@@ChristopherTumminello thats an optimistic scenario.. only discernibe if you are already experienced, how many youtubers can you trust? and always? sometimes they don't lie but they avoid to face the raw and plain truth. like when rabea was talking on the kemper. I pre-ordered last year before NAMM and Steven took me through a demo at Neural's NAMM booth. Sadly, I had to cancel my preorder due to "current events". Hopefully sometime in 2021 I can make it happen. I love the feel of it! The power seems to make a HUGE difference. It shouldn't feel so good, but it does! And the size is perfect! NO special case or bag required! It's small enough to put in the large pocket of pro gig bags with an exp pedal and hop on the train to rehearsal or a gig.
Lee is digitally challenged and still made a kick ass preset in just a few min. That amp model and cab with no tweaking sounded pretty good. I own a Helix and that's not true most the time. Thanks Lee and Rebea, always appreciate the humor, and great gear reviews.
The fm3 kinda seems like the elephant in the room with respect to the quad cortex, it's a fair bit cheaper and has a pretty comparable feature set as far as I can tell
Yep, after hearing this, I'm pretty glad I decided to go with the FM3. I've A/B'd my FM3 with several of the amps it emulates through a power amp and guitar cab, plus my PowerCab with IRs, and the Fractal models are pretty damn close in feel and sound. These models sound so stiff and fizzy. The UI definitely looks a lot better than Fractal, though, but those buttons look so close to each other. Wish my FM3 had more but I can't imagine using that thing live, you'd hit the other switches accidentally super easily...
It sounds like a great product, but I have NEVER heard Bea demonstrate something and it sound bad. Bea could plug into a mouldy banana left in the freezer and sound 10x better than the best I’ve ever sounded!
The acid test for ALL of these devices is whether the reviewer ditches their old pedals and uses this exclusively; they never, ever do, they always find some caveat to excuse themselves from it.
There is still the "colector" factor with pedals. Its somewhere deep in human nature, that we like to collect things. PS: Bea uses Helix live, when giging with Frog leap Leo.
The intro sounded pretty digital but when Lee was dialing in the tones it sounded incredibly organic. If only it has an expression pedal that would make it perfect.
As a metal head, I would have liked to hear at least one signature Rabea metal sound. Seems like the QC can't produce them :( The video is basically no tone demos all tech talk and menu fiddling
i will be definitely convinced by this the day i will see someone making a video reviewing in depth all the effects (compressor, chorus, flanger, phaser, delay, reverbs etc ..) hopefully, they do all sound as good as classic pedals. the point here is to have an ultimate "all in one" guitar box of high end quality. also would love to hear what it does do when recording anything using a 48+ powered mic.
@@pieflies furthermore i'd like to know if that thing is "frriendly" to guitar pedals as pre, also what can and/or does it do if you decide to plug in a bass guitar, and is there a looper that works simple like that tc ditto etc etc , what are the AD/DA converters in it ? (as of dec, 2020 i never got an answer to that) and finally, where is the fking user manual to it?????
To my rather novice ears, this doesn't seem to sound as good as some of the other units in that space, but I really like what they did with the interface - the dual function buttons/knobs is a great idea. Dialing things with a physical encoder often works much better than trying to do such things on a touch screen. That was smart of them. :) Edit - Also, shouldn't the noise gate be plumbed into the signal chain before the delay and reverb, and maybe even right after the compressor, to avoid interfering with those effects?
Right. Until I can compare this thing and the kemper back to back I will be cautious to say anything about how it sounds. The thing that does make the quad cortex really appealing to me is it's size tbh. Would honestly be so happy if this sounds as good as the kemper, but the jury's still out on that.
I tried the Fortin Cali plugin from Neural DSP and was shocked at how real it sounded. I own Amplitube 4 and thought, this is real competition for anything IK Multimedia has. I haven' t yet tried Amplitube 5, but can't wait to do so! The modelling amps are just becoming so scary accurate.
looks fantastic, one question; how beer proof is it? looks robust, but would be good to know that having your whole rig under your feet isn't a big risk around spilage
I mean but u got to carry the amp and the mic placement manually. If u got the quad cortex you emulate a hecka load of mic and effects and amps. Better investing.
@@derekchapman5167 the captor is shite tbh, there's no impedance curves and speaker resonanse so you get a middy bullshit sound. fractal or suhr are better options because they are designed with that in mind
I'm absolutely blown away by this. Like, the Helix and the Fractal audio stuff I was always amazed by how they sounded and played. But man this is just outrageously incredible. I must pick this one day
The Kemper Digi fx is the only one that truly sounds like a great tube amp. I own a Mesa Triaxis with the Mesa Simul-class 2:90 power amp and the Kemper copied the Mesa so well I couldn't hear the difference if my life depended on it. The Triaxis and 2:90 sound utterly crushing but if you haven't been in a room with a rig like this then you will be inclined to think the Neural is the ultimate when it isn't even close This Neural doesn't come close to the natural sound and dynamics of a tube amp.
I'd bet a year or two from now, when they've had time to catch up to Kemper and Fractal, they'll be owning the market with the sound quality and options. They just need a bit of time now.
That's a weird statement, because Fractal is continuously developing improvements and we don't know if Kemper have something up their sleeve. It's difficult to gauge the future, professionals are still using the AxeFX and Kemper Profiler. Neural DSP definitely has the advantage of aggressive paid promotion right now though.
A little correction: AFAIK strictly speaking it is not quad core. To my best knowledge this unit uses two separate ADSP-SC589 processors. Each one is a dual-core 500 Mhz DSP. So yeah, 4 separate cores, but not quad core and not 2 GHz. But don't worry, it does not mean it will be bad or obsolete. Specs doesn't mean everything. KPA has much less processing power. Efficient coding can go a very long way. Anyway, it sounds good. Competition is a good thing for us players.
I just got an FM3 which I'm delighted with but the interface on the Quad Cortex is next level. I don't think the sounds match Fractal yet but no doubt Neural will get there in time. Hope everyone who gets one enjoys it as much as I love the FM3.
Really cool that you get to adjust the mic stuff. That's the one thing about the kemper is you don't get control of the mic, the mic and cab are just merged.
People say units like these 'sound bad', but the thing to remember is that they're judging with their eyes. If you hid this unit and pretended you were demoing an amp, a lot of folk would love the sound. Also, how can they properly judge the sound of any of the sounds in this demo, when it's not likely they have a stereo Kraken rig set up at home, or a Friedman BE100 cranked on the daily. In a mix/live there is no way to tell the difference anymore between analogue & digital. And for gigging guitarists/bassists (lol 2020) these things are just mega. I've never heard a keyboard player complain about digital vs analogue, don't know why guitarists do lol.

richard kruspe from rammstein once explained it perfectly in an interview, the problem with amp simulations is that the devices cannot reproduce the after swinging of a guitar cab because it requires a lot of cpu power. I think that's exactly that feeling thing that many amp players criticize
The moment. They bring back Rabea making that goofy noise for the fifth time when they were talking about noise gates was the greatest was the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Some patches sounded harsh because those patches were initially created on humbucker, and rabea had to play them through a strat unfortunately.
Great review. Pro tip: gate after the amp and before delays and reverbs; it'll sound much more natural and you won't get rid of your delay and reverb tails.

I honestly like the sound of my fender mustang mk2 stereo head unit and it really sounds like a real amp, maybe because it is a real amp.
Never be able to tell in a few minutes of a demo. I use a Headrush and the amps not only sound great but they feel right. Rabea you do such justice to this piece of gear thank you for giving us awesome tones to hear
Marcelo, if you really want a plug and play experience try the Strymon Iridium. After buying it I sold my Kemper…
Reb has done a comparison between this and kemper with amp capture and this is much more authentic.
Love my Fractal FM3 and I think it is the best in class but competition is always good. Everybody wins in that case as things get better and better

The dual function knobs was done 12 years ago on the G-system by TC Electronic.

Right. Until I can compare this thing and the kemper back to back I will be cautious to say anything about how it sounds. The thing that does make the quad cortex really appealing to me is it's size tbh. Would honestly be so happy if this sounds as good as the kemper, but the jury's still out on that.

Well, it's kind of acceptable to call Quad-core if it has 2x2, because 2x2=4 cores. What is complete nonsense is the 2GHz thing.
