Gorecki uses themes of misery and despair often but he also used motherhood as a motif, even his darkest music has a tenderness in its heart. I love these pieces and Chicago Symphony did it beautifully.

You are so right. I love the 3rd Symphony, but he also wrote great string quartets, much spiritual music (such as this) and a wonderful harpsichord concerto. His genius goes way beyond his "one hit"!

I first heard this in Glasgow in the early 90's and have not stopped listening to it since. We lost a wonderful composer and servant of God when Henryk died. He has been slated by a lot of people for only composing one hit. Those critics haven't a clue!

The build up in this is absolutely mesmerising - as the voices layer, you get this beautiful, rich sound that fills you up completely. Music like this is just wonderful - whether or not you are religious (I, for example, am not).

The irony of the idea of a completely meaningful meaninglessness. Some logic goes missing. Some chasm wistfully bridged by nothing at all. Such faith in faithlessness. No! Please - No!

I love it. These songs were written during the Solidaritat movement in Poland where people were beaten simply for sitting and protesting. This was the result of that protest. So beautiful.

Magnificent. Whether intentional or not, a deeply theological statement, depending on one's understanding -- that the first addressing and acknowledging phrase"Domine Deus noster" (our Lord God) builds through nearly 90% of the piece before the asking request of "Miserere nobis" (have mercy on us) comes in. The layering of voices and the delicate handling of this, by both composer and performers, left me speechless and feeling in a holy "thin place."

    Domine Deus noster, miserere nobis!

I have three (3) things I want to say/ask about this piece:
This truly is a masterpiece that, to me, seems underrated.
I love how each movement has the "progressive" feel, that is, more and more voices are added, and the dynamic gets louder and louder. It's so powerful!
Secondly, I envy and wonder how the choir stays in tune (that is, not eventually going flat after an half hour of singing a cappella). Also, how does each new voice find its starting note?
Lastly, what's that clicking sound in the background?

    • @havokmusicinc
      @havokmusicinc 9 лет назад +5

William Ford RE: Staying in tune: I would not be surprised if some folks had tuning forks, and gave themselves a ping to establish pitch before their entrances.
The clicking sounds like the rustling of programs in the audience to me.

+shohreh shakoory The text comprises five words: 'Domine Deus Noster' (Lord our God), which are repeated for the first ten sections, resolved by a chorus of 'Miserere nobis' (Lord have mercy on us) in the eleventh and final section. Both lines of the text are formed as simple but imploring pleas.

I think Arvo Part was the "better" composer (especially more inventive), but i find Gorecki's "Misserere" here, to be a far more solid and whole offering that most of Part's choral works for The Mass. Part's Masses were downright BORING. The Bennedicitus, etc. Three cheers for Gorecki!
