Oh, hey! That's my quote about the costumes! ❤ I would probably watch a "witches in the 1920's" drama, especially one that handles it as an open secret like this.
@@BetterWithBob I have a conspiracy theory about this episode part of me from my past I believe the charmed ones the Holywells sisters what concerns Paige Matthews I believe since the generation they were resurrected from their bloodline to continue their destiny the warrens so this is why in the future they look similar to the warrens The Halliwell’s sisters And what concerns Paige Matthews with the evil enchantress there has to be some connection because the evil enchantress takes place in a different time periods then the warrens so there was some resurrection to continue the charmed ones legacy So in the charmed bloodline it has to be some resurrection somehow to reclaim the warrens legacy so this is why Prue Halliwell and her sisters Piper and Phoebe were also descendant From Melinda Warren because she was the one who birth the power of three since she was put into death because she had a daughter name prudent so she might have some other daughters who were three daughters so she was the one who brought the power free
One thing I liked about the show before it started adding the arcs was that we saw more of the stories adding to their lives outside of magic. Piper and her struggle to keep her normal life and her love for an angel, Prue discovering herself and stepping out the head of house role she was given at a young age, Phoebe growing up and maturing.
Dear Better With Bob, Please continue to enlighten us with cool behind-the-scenes facts like the one you stated in this episode about the producers preventing fan confusion with their names AND the fact about producers wanting stand-alone episodes rather than an arc. Thank You!!!
Those are the two best episodes of the entire series!! Alyssa really shines in this episode as do Shannon and Holly. The chemistry between Tyler and Alyssa melted the screen. I believe it's what led to Cole.
Alyssa and Shannon were both great in this episode and the drop kick Shannon did before she even had her telekinetic powers was wow. The chemistry between Tyler and Alyssa was enough to melt my screen. Each actress did such a good job of being themselves and someone else at the same time. Especially Alyssa.
Loved this! I think the first time the Charmed Ones write a spell themselves isn't Pardon My Past, but earlier in the second season with The Painted World episode. It's the Smart Spell that Phoebe writes for the aptitude test.
This was a favorite episode of mine (and one of the better ones from Season 2). I wish we had more information on the cousins or a follow up on Phoebe's lives she COULD have lived in between P. Russell and her current one. This episode inspired many questions like why magic was openly practiced in the 20s? Was P. Baxter (Gram's mother) having an affair on her husband with past Leo? Why did 2 cousins have different powers than we typically saw with Warren witches (perhaps another family married into theirs)? I would have watched a spinoff of THIS generation of Charmed predecessors- you could even recast actresses since they do mention Phoebe recognized here sister's souls which explained why they looked to her like Prue and Piper. Why were the cousin's first names initials in the family tree?? Biggest question: Why would her sisters have a roaring party while Phoebe has to study for a test?? Nice of you to acknowledge the music but you forgot the "love song" Anton sang to P. Russell (who was in Phoebe's body), "If You Were the Only Girl In The World (And I Were The Only Boy)". That too was a classic song from the era.
IT WAS FANMADE?! i just made a fool of myself it looked a bit off but i brushed it off as early development stuff, i looked more polished and interesting than the actual reboot (don't mind me i actually llike the reboot but still) and i looked more accurate and interesting than most period dramas these days
Ah yeah, you'd be surprised what you can accomplish with home technology these days. Whoever made it definitely has access to some good equipment and knows how to do some decent CGI and colour grading. The dresses look like reproductions and actually of better quality than the ones in the episode (although that could be the grading).
This was fun to revisit. After many lackluster Charmed episodes/seasons, it's nice to remember those little moments of fire that ignited my love for this series. Thanks.
I very much agree with your stance on standalone episodes. Society nowadays as normalized tornado pacing in writing due to everything needing to be done asap, that anything that seems like it just wants to focus on something out of the way is seen as filler. While stuff has been made easier to binge thanks to shorter length, I also feel it sacrifices time to develop characters that aren't just going with the pace of the show itself. Having an episode where characters sit around and hang out isn't bad if executed properly. I also don't like the use of filler as a buzzword, because it implies that just being filler makes it bad. When there's good and bad filler. Obviously shows don't need to be 22-23 episodes per season, but I also don't think 6 is appropriate either. I'd say around 10 to 12 episodes are fine, maybe 8 if you want a shorter season compared to others. While I consider Season 1 to be the show's best season, Season 2 is up there for me, because what it lacks in terms of story arcs it makes up for with some of the strongest standalones in the entire show. Morality Bites, Pardon my Past, Astral Monkey are the biggest highlights in this regard. Even Murphy's Luck suicide metaphor was good. And yeah, Phoebe was the best character in the early seasons, and that same energy she had was later transferred over to Paige, even down to making Paige not have a job like Phoebe did.
I loved all the stand alone episode, those were the ones where you really got to know the characters and that gave them time and space to develop. Recent tv shows are so plot heavy that you don’t really have any time to get to know the characters.
Pardon my past is my favourite episode! Throughout the whole of charmed! But also Pipers past life, She didnt have the same powers as piper instead she had Molecular Deceleration instead of Immobilisation. Piper was the only sister whose power evolved, But aside from that great video!
The thing about the powers...but the Charmed Ones were prophesied to have particular powers anyway, the three powers that were Melinda Warren's active powers, but split between the three sisters. I know their powers evolved and they each developed additional active powers but by that point in Season 2, it made totaly sense anyway that Phoebe would not have any additional powers yet besides promonitions. So I really don't get why they have to throw in that explanation.
A season later: Phoebe: Did you know an evil past life version of me? Cole: Yes. But we didn't exchange pleasantries. Phoebe: What do mean? Cole: Well let's just say I wouldn't have pushed her off the roof but if she tripped and fell I wouldn't have lost any sleep.
I was extremely invested in Phoebe during the early seasons of Charmed because we had some commonality (both were the 3rd siblings and the least one to succeed in life). I do think it's because of Constance Burge's writing and she wrote Phoebe based on her.
I was really young when I watched the earlier seasons, I'm not sure why I connected most with phoebe other than her having hairy arms like I did lol. As I got older and rewatched, I saw different parts of myself in each of the sisters.
I'm new to the channel but I love Charmed and seeing content about it is just heartwarming, so thank you. I also feel so dumb for just now realising about the "being born in the manor makes you more susceptible to evil" motive. It happens with Wyatt too, he turned evil, prompting Chris to come back in time. Chris wasn't born in the house so he's like the other sisters in terms of turning bad. Jeez, I feel embarrassed now.
I recently started watching Charmed again and I had forgotten how awesome it was! It really stands up! The vanquishing for this episode was way too easy and quick, but still I've always loved this episode the period set dressing and costuming, plus the different powers from the girls. My biggest takeaway from the ep really is P Baxter and P Bowen being impressed by Phoebe (in P Russel's body) throwing them off her then doing a backward tumble ("How'd she learn that?!?"), when P Bowen (Prue's past self) just did a flying kick across the room a few minutes prior lol
At the end of the episode that comes after this one, we see Phoebe out at P3 wearing a necklace-like adornment on her forehead. I love that she was quietly picking up fashion inspiration during her trip to the past, lol.
All that 1920s info about the flappers and challenging gender roles was fascinating - thank you! Also I need to look up that fan trailer for the 1920s spin off…
Loved this episode. I will say it's a shame Anton didn't become a recurring villain as the ending almost implied he might, but maybe thats for the best.
I think an animated reunion movie might be the best thing. Mostly because of the freedom of what could be achieved SFX wise, and since it means the actresses who aren't talking won't have to interact 😂
@@BetterWithBob Well actually Alyssa Milano said they’ll do something in the movie. They’re talking about it again after they were so rudely interrupted, And a new cast would do the warrens :) a cartoon can be nice too I just don’t know if anybody would watch it
Ever since Paige was introduced, I wonder where she was born. It would made sense that she also was born in the manor, considering that Patty kept pregnancy a secret, but they never clarified that in the show, sadly
when was leo born? because he was in his 20s in the war the latest he could have been born was 1925 so how is it a past life exactly. Erratum i thought it was in1927 not 1924 , still... i guess his past life died soon after the episode
Leo claimed to have been born in 1924 but that wouldn't jive with his WW2 service. He joined up after Pearl Harbor (1941) and he was in medical school at the time and became an Army medic. Leo would have been between 22 and 25 when he left med school so he would have been born circa 1918 or earlier. I blame the writers being unable to do math.
As Phoebe is my favorite of the sisters, I think this episode would fall into my top 10 easily. Plus I love a good flashback episode. Season 2 of charmed is one of my favorites, (my rankings that no one asked for is 4, 3, 2, 5, 7, 1, 8, and 6). And my favorite episode of the whole show is in season 2 that I would love a video for, Chick Flick.
P Russell and her cousins that were the charmed ones back in 1924 and I’ve seen the teaser that they are called the warrens is it possible they would do a charmed prequel?! Can they explain Halliwell’s background before they existed or they could explain why way back how did the power free was created?! ?!🔮🥠 2:21
I never understood how Leo had an adult past life running around in the 1920’s when he must himself have been born around then in order to have fought in World War One as a soldier?
One year too late but Leo fought in WW2 not WW1 when he was about 17/18. Meaning his date of birth would've been in 1924/25, this episode is set in 1924 so it still works. Plus, Piper's past life had broken up with past Leo so it's possible that between the break up and the events of the episode he may have died.
Hey could look intro 3x13 and 4x15 ? Bride and Gloom and Marry-go-round. In the season 3 episode it is stated that since Prue married a Warlock with the help of a dark priestess she turns evil and then it turn her sisters evil too cause they are connected but when Phoebe marries Cole (the source) with the help of the seer a season later, it doesn't turn Piper nor Paige evil and only Phoebe. The writers suck at world building right ? Or in 1x17 we learn that the charmed ones can't have their powers in the past but they have them in the future 2x02 and it is confirmed in 3x03 that they can't have powers in the past. But in 5x22 when chris comes back from the future during the entire season 6 he has his powers no problem (telekinesis)
I believe it was a different spell that Dantalion cast. She specifically wanted to get the Book of Shadows, and the only way to do that was turn it evil, and the sisters were affected. When the Source married Phoebe, it was just a dark wedding performed in different circumstances. My theory with Chris is that they cast some kind of spell to allow him to use them in the past. It's twenty-two years later so the Charmed line's powers could feasibly have advanced so as to do that. As when Paige travels back to the 60s she can't use hers and that's in the same season.
What's funny is that in their past lives, P. Russell was the eldest, Bowen was the middle and Baxter was the youngest. Which could mean why Past Phoebe had stronger powers as well as she was the first born and thus the strongest. Given that Prue and after her demise, Piper had much stronger powers over their relatives.
@@BetterWithBob I can’t remember if you’ve done it or not, but I’d love to see an anatomy of Good Bad and the Cursed. It’s such a well done episode and the fact that Shannon directed it and pulled off an amazing performance. Also, you have the added bonus of different scene pairings which is also interesting ie Prue/Cole, Phoebe/Victor.
Spiritualism was actually very popular in America about this time. Mediums, ouija boards, fortune telling…it does make sense. I think later, when America fought communism, having this Christian nationalism became more prominent. But this is several decades before the satanic panic, and it seems reasonable to me
I think the evil past lives could've been like a means to an end for the charmed ones, like they needed to lose their powers to make way for the prophesized charmed ones powers, maybe Piper's was just an earlier incarnation like Paige
@@BetterWithBob yeah i think that too especially considering the age difference i mean just as you have uncles and aunts that are close friends of your parents. She must have been close with her which is why i think its cute she named phoebe after her
Small tweak about their powers. - Telekinesis is viewed as a strong power, and she was brought back as the eldest, a traditionally powerful witch. Prue was upgraded in her powers. Not punished. Especially becoming a Charmed once where she HAD to get one of the 3 powers, she was gifted the most powerful one. - Piper's powers were also upgraded. If you watch, her past life could only slow time, not freeze it. She also could only do one being at a time. And no, that wasn't Anton fighting the freeze. We've already seen that and it's very different.
Wrong piper could freeze the warlock told Russel he would fight through her power he was also protected by the amulet it was shown later in the episode that it could protect two people when prue tried to attack Russel she said the amulet is protecting them both also Melinda had the power to freeze and her power would be the weakest as it was said it gets stronger so her freeze wouldn’t be weaker
They all should have been punished they cursed every future life oh phoebe which would have killed charmed phoebe did magic out in the open and didn’t care
i miss episodic shows. most of the shows when i was a kid were like that, there might be bigger plot point going through the entire season where it becomes more important at teh end of the season but even if you miss episode mid season you didnt miss anything so important that u cant just keep watching. nowdays all shows feel like really long streched out movie, where you HAVE to binge the whole season so it feels even more like a movie on top of being a bigger commitment (even tho shows now have less episodes overall). or maybe im just nostalgic for old shows.. who knows
They would technically be called phantoms or poltergeist. Which are usually karmic energy left over, impressions of people left behind. Not full on entities.
@@BetterWithBob Fanon. Show creators haven't confirmed anything about their names. Patty mentioned to Phoebe that she named her after her favorite aunt but Grams has no sister so the fans then assumed that she must be referring to her grand-aunt, past Prue who was probably named Phoebe.
I remember watching this episode with Phoebe she had to reconnect to her past her descendants that had a different path and her but I wish they went deeper but I did understood that in the past life her great descendants was doing something evil of course but who was that little girl Christina the one that she broke the doll because Christina was practising fortune-telling why did P Russell broke her doll because she was practising fortune-telling and who was that little girl Christina and explainable in the Charmed ones Who is the win deeper the details about Christina why was she in the Manor House 🏠 was Christina related to them?!
I don’t think Prue’s past life was punished, the same way Piper wasn’t punished. Prue and Piper’s powers seemed to have been upgraded. Prue goes from manipulating ice to being able to manipulating matter as a whole whereas Piper goes from slowing things down to stopping things entirely. It seems like you don’t necessary get the same powers, they either get downgraded or upgraded with each reincarnation.
@@BetterWithBob The Triad resisted Piper’s freezes too and it had the same effect. It is possible Prue was punished because of her action in this past life. Regardless, the past lives of Prue and Phoebe became two of the Charmed Ones. Question: Do you think the souls of the Charmed Ones would be reincarnated? The Warren matriarchs don’t seem to get reincarnated because of their role as high priestesses even in the afterlife and they will get summoned for wiccanings. (Also: Did Phoebe get a wiccaning? The sisters’ powers were bound as soon as Phoebe was born. Paige definitely did not get a wiccaning.)
Telekinesis is more powerful than ice breath. It's unclear if Piper kept the same power. Molecular deceleration may have evolved into molecular immobilization or Anton might have simply been too strong for her. Fire throwing is not a prophesized Charmed power. It would have been unavailable to Phoebe even if her past life were good.
I dunno I think Sword and The City was a highlight out of the total contradictory mess that was S6. Also I think I figured out why I was never really into this episode. I had watched the later Seasons first and then started to watch earlier seasons so by the time I got to this episode, there was just too many contradictions with the timeline and rules around time travel for me to abide. Unpopular opinion of course but this episode was just meh. Loved the music though.
Season 2 is definitely my 4th or 5th favorite season I really only disliked the the neighbor and Leo love triangle with Piper maybe it's because of the growth over time I didn't like that they through a distraction in so we didn't ask questions just to remove him by the end of the season I would have been happier if he stayed till the end like Daryl kinda did and have him be comic relief for every time something weird happens and a way to show they had some normal because with Daryl or there father it was always like a crime show with a magical twist
Greg Vaughan revealed recently that he was asked to come back in later seasons but the network wouldn't allow him because of his commitments to another show
Oh, hey! That's my quote about the costumes! ❤
I would probably watch a "witches in the 1920's" drama, especially one that handles it as an open secret like this.
I love that there is someone out there talking about a show that I've loved since watching reruns at age 12 and know every episode.

Her past life hair?
I prefer this over her season 6 hairstyle I feel like holly should have kept this haircut
Your videos are amazing!!!
“ The Power of Three blondes” is a great episode from weak season 6.
SUCH A GOOD EPISODE
This could've been a good spinoff. I love the fan made trailer 😊
It's very good quality 👌
All that 1920s info about the flappers and challenging gender roles was fascinating - thank you! Also I need to look up that fan trailer for the 1920s spin off…
It's funny how the bob is now seen as a feminine hairstyle when it was chosen by the flappers because it looked masculine lol
Loved this episode. I will say it's a shame Anton didn't become a recurring villain as the ending almost implied he might, but maybe thats for the best.
I badly want the spin-off of the warrens to come true, We charmed fans need something of charmed.
Paige might have even been born on a neutral plane which the Elders wouldn’t be able to monitor.
She also didn't get a Wiccaning either.
Or during the eclipse remember the elders can’t see on earth when the sun is being blocked
when was leo born? because he was in his 20s in the war the latest he could have been born was 1925 so how is it a past life exactly. Erratum i thought it was in1927 not 1924 , still... i guess his past life died soon after the episode
Yeah I think it just about works if you rationalise his past life dying soon after the events (or already being dead and P Baxter just not knowing).
@@MegaMagicdog a whole confusing mess
@@MegaMagicdog *screams in penny halliwell giving birth at 12*
As Phoebe is my favorite of the sisters, I think this episode would fall into my top 10 easily.
Covington cross was a great show. Excalibur was a favorite of mine and when I saw Arthur and Gwenevere I was hooked.
Can anyone tell me where are the red headed girl and blond guy from ? I mean which TV show ? Please 6:52
I think this, Miss hellfire and chick flick are my favourite episodes of season 2
Chick Flick is comedy gold lol
The old lady holding a necklace is the lurker from Friends :D
I never understood how Leo had an adult past life running around in the 1920’s when he must himself have been born around then in order to have fought in World War One as a soldier?
Yes! I'm so surprised no one ever talks about this!
Maybe he was collateral damage soon after.
Beautiful review! I'd love to see you do 2x01 Witch Trial.
Love that one too 🙂
@@BetterWithBob Can you do 3x05 as well Sight Unseen?
@9:51 🔥❄️❄️❄️
Love that power
What's funny is that in their past lives, P. Russell was the eldest, Bowen was the middle and Baxter was the youngest. Which could mean why Past Phoebe had stronger powers as well as she was the first born and thus the strongest. Given that Prue and after her demise, Piper had much stronger powers over their relatives.
This and Jung and the Restless are my favorite episodes of the series
Love that one too. Anything to do with dream realities is cool for me
@@BetterWithBob I can’t remember if you’ve done it or not, but I’d love to see an anatomy of Good Bad and the Cursed. It’s such a well done episode and the fact that Shannon directed it and pulled off an amazing performance. Also, you have the added bonus of different scene pairings which is also interesting ie Prue/Cole, Phoebe/Victor.
This episode will always be special to me because it was the first one I watched.
Spiritualism was actually very popular in America about this time. Mediums, ouija boards, fortune telling…it does make sense.
I think later, when America fought communism, having this Christian nationalism became more prominent. But this is several decades before the satanic panic, and it seems reasonable to me
Ooh very good point
What I find kinda funny to think about in this this episode is that one of their past version is either their grandmother's mother or grandmother.
Yeah Piper's past life is her own great grandmother
I love having the same last name as the sisters, even if it is spelled differently.
What show are the clips at 7:05 from?
That is Fate: the Winx Saga
Can you do Soul Survivor, Chris Crossed and Little Box of Horrors?
This episode was really good to me it was interesting 🙂
Once again Prue saves the day! 😍
I think the evil past lives could've been like a means to an end for the charmed ones, like they needed to lose their powers to make way for the prophesized charmed ones powers, maybe Piper's was just an earlier incarnation like Paige
Ooh interesting theory :)
Phoebe Bowen must be Phoebes namesake. As patty said she named her after her favorite aunt in that 70s episode.
P Bowen was a cousin, although she could have meant aunt as in an honorary one
They all should have been punished they cursed every future life oh phoebe which would have killed charmed phoebe did magic out in the open and didn’t care
i miss episodic shows. most of the shows when i was a kid were like that, there might be bigger plot point going through the entire season where it becomes more important at teh end of the season but even if you miss episode mid season you didnt miss anything so important that u cant just keep watching. nowdays all shows feel like really long streched out movie, where you HAVE to binge the whole season so it feels even more like a movie on top of being a bigger commitment (even tho shows now have less episodes overall).
or maybe im just nostalgic for old shows.. who knows
It can be both lol
They would technically be called phantoms or poltergeist. Which are usually karmic energy left over, impressions of people left behind. Not full on entities.
the sisters names are priscillia baxter phoebe bowen and pearl russell
Is that canon or just fanon?
@@BetterWithBob Fanon. Show creators haven't confirmed anything about their names. Patty mentioned to Phoebe that she named her after her favorite aunt but Grams has no sister so the fans then assumed that she must be referring to her grand-aunt, past Prue who was probably named Phoebe.
I remember watching this episode with Phoebe she had to reconnect to her past her descendants that had a different path and her but I wish they went deeper but I did understood that in the past life her great descendants was doing something evil of course but who was that little girl Christina the one that she broke the doll because Christina was practising fortune-telling why did P Russell broke her doll because she was practising fortune-telling and who was that little girl Christina and explainable in the
Charmed ones Who is the win deeper the details about Christina why was she in the Manor House 🏠 was Christina related to them?!
I love the power of 3
Prue Piper and Paige ❤
The real power of 3
MISS. PHOEBE FELL TO THE DARKEST LOVE OF ALL TIME AND CAME BACK FROM IT BETTER THAN BETTER !
I think P Baxter's power was the same as Piper's. It's just that she couldn't freeze Anton because he protected himself from it.
Paige definitely did not get a wiccaning.)
i love the episode centrerd in the past so all hallowells eve is my favorite and the 60s one in season 6
🔥🔥🔥
Wait, so if Piper's past life had kids with Dan's past life, does that mean Piper essentially dated the reincarnation of her great grandfather??
Yes, she did
Please do Long Live the Queen
One day sure
So its ok - when Phoebe is possessed to be evil but not Cole
So piper is her own ggreat grandmother?
Yep that's about it
Telekinesis is more powerful than ice breath. It's unclear if Piper kept the same power. Molecular deceleration may have evolved into molecular immobilization or Anton might have simply been too strong for her. Fire throwing is not a prophesized Charmed power. It would have been unavailable to Phoebe even if her past life were good.
Tyler Christopher was good in the role of anton
I dunno I think Sword and The City was a highlight out of the total contradictory mess that was S6.
Also I think I figured out why I was never really into this episode. I had watched the later Seasons first and then started to watch earlier seasons so by the time I got to this episode, there was just too many contradictions with the timeline and rules around time travel for me to abide.
Unpopular opinion of course but this episode was just meh. Loved the music though.
yup yup, my favorite episodes are phoebes centric and unusually evil phoebe
Season 2 is definitely my 4th or 5th favorite season I really only disliked the the neighbor and Leo love triangle with Piper maybe it's because of the growth over time I didn't like that they through a distraction in so we didn't ask questions just to remove him by the end of the season I would have been happier if he stayed till the end like Daryl kinda did and have him be comic relief for every time something weird happens and a way to show they had some normal because with Daryl or there father it was always like a crime show with a magical twist
Greg Vaughan revealed recently that he was asked to come back in later seasons but the network wouldn't allow him because of his commitments to another show
Phoebe
anytime i see this episode i just cringe at past prue's hair and outfit
I need you to do Bride And Gloom, love that episode
