I am both a stacker and a silversmith. My 3 best are 1. Generic rounds. The cheaper the better. 2. Junk silver. 3. Sterling. I can resell the sterling, repair it and sell it, take part of it to incorporate in other jewelry and melt the rest. With the rounds, I can stack them, I can melt them down and add copper to turn them to sterling. And when I melt them down, with or without copper, I will turn them to shot for casting.
The only thing I completely agree on is the high premium stuff. And to me, this will include silver eagles, other coins or rounds with a high premium.
My goal is to get as close to spot as possible for my silversmithing needs.
I still have a decent stack that includes silver eagles, maple leaves, kangaroos, and others. But that is not my priority.
I love collecting junk silver. And try to always get it at $12 face. Unless silver really jumps, $12 is my personal limit unless it is something I want for my collection. I can lose out to others by buying at where I do, and I am ok with that.
    I stack on a budget.

    • @michaeldenison7339
      @michaeldenison7339 Год назад +1

@@stephanies6770 Silver is silver. Though right now I don't tend to buy much of anything. As everything has a high premium right now. Including junk silver. While gold and silver have fallen, premiums tend not to. But . . . whatever the source, if you can get it as close to spot as possible, the better. Jeep in mind, the numismatic value of junk silver might outweigh the melt value. It used to not be this way, even a year ago. Also, junk silver, due to wear on the coins, has less silver than what is listed that they should have. So, take into account 90% silver by weight, and more loss due to wear.
If your goal is the most silver for as close to spot, junk silver can be a good purchase and a bad one at the same time. What you get in the bags tends to have low to no numismatic value due to wear, so it is often cheaper, but also, it is lighter due to wear.
But, hey, it is fun to go through, far more interesting that shiney, high premium rounds and coins. And you just might find a valuable coin that was missed by whomever sold the bag.

A lot of sites do 1 time spot price deals on silver. Bought a 5 Oz bar at spot from SD Bullion, all my rounds are from there too. 10 1 oz rounds from another site, I think it was Provident or JM I forget. Done a few eBay buys but generally stay away from it. Also Craigslist and garage/estate sales are awesome

@Lord ballsac the 2nd Definitely important, but don't forget a constitution for community self-governance and maybe a plan for creating your own currency (split tally sticks will work in a pinch). If society collapses, you'll need more than a gun to retain adequate security.
The history of money is a bit more nuanced than "paper bad; metal good," though metal is a decent way to hedge against Fed meddling and economic voodoo. The primary issues are 1) who controls the money supply and 2) what is the best monetary policy; what backs the currency is largely irrelevant. Wompum and cowrie shells make the case for the Austrian school/quantity theory: the primary requirement to guarantee the success of a monetary system over long timespans is a stable quantity. (Short term fluctuations will occur from changes in velocity, which is why we have not seen hyperinflation due to Fed printing -- the velocity has been steadily decreasing for decades as all the funny money "wealth" is concentrated in fewer and fewer hands.) There is nothing innately or "intrinsically" valuable about gold and silver -- their value arises from industrial uses, jewelery, and thousands of years of monetary tradition.
After the ashes, your gold, silver, and copper will likely be needed for repairing electrical systems. Your currency system ought to be issued by a mutual agreement in a community, backed by the agreement of community members to settle transactions with the currency. The natural units to use would either be the hour (manpower) or some measure of food stored or in production.
I've heard gold and silver called "Mad Max Money", but I think precious metals are more a way to store wealth intergenerationally rather than as a plan for surviving an apocalypse. After the apocalypse is survived and society restored (hopefully a better, more libertarian one), you can bust out the buried treasure for your grandkids.

@@SilverDragons47 yes I forgot about that word. Constitutional silver. At least that sounds more respectful, & more professional than JUNK SILVER ! Thank you for your reply back silver slayers in regards to this topic. Personally speaking, it's a joke in regards to paper shorts on the stock market in comparison to the value of owning the physical. This was a warning sign to all who said I'll wait until it goes down another fifty cents, or a dollar. I said when that day comes you won't buy it for cheaper because the premium will go up, & it'll sell out within a day or two. When the ratio comes down, firmly believe that it won't be unheard of for this manipulated metal to go to triple digits. I wonder if you agree with me ? After all, just to make one tomahawk missile it takes 480 oz. of silver! That's not including the booming solar industry along with so much more as you already know. When this occurs, that constitutional silver, let's say one dime. They sure won't be calling it junk silver anymore. This could very well be the greatest transfer of wealth in the history !

No John Green unfortunately I have no way of obtaining a tomahawk missile ! But that sure is a hell of a lot of precious metal in one very deadly weapons ! So, can you imagine how many of those are in existence with all that physical silver in each one ! I'm sure our u.s. military has got thousands of those. They're coming up with new ideas for silver every month. It's a precious metal that is definitely manipulated in regards to the stock market price, versus the real thing in your hand. It most definitely should be in triple digits in regard to the price, and that goes without saying 😮

I take your point but the Federal Reserve is the U.S. Central bank, enacted officially by the Federal Reserve Act. It's just the U.S. printing its own money legally, perhaps recklessly, but definitely not "forged" in the negative sense of the word. Since it is printed by the Fed itself, it is authentic money, not "forged" money. Someone else would have to "forge" U.S. currency for it to be a felony. In any case, if we want silver and gold to hold and grow in value, let the Federal Reserve keep up what it's doing. No one or institution can outrun inflation forever. And besides, we need the stimulus injection at the moment, unless we want to relive the Great Depression era of unemployment, household fiscal deaths, and permanent loss of businesses that would make today's crisis look tame in comparison.

Managing money is different from accumulating wealth, and the lack of investment education in schools may explain why people struggle to maintain their financial gains. The examples you provided are relevant, and I personally benefited from the market crisis, as I embrace challenging times while others tend to avoid them. Well, at least my advisor does too, jokingly.

"Collector" is different from "stacker" yes you can do both but you have to understand the collected market. I do really well on Flipping graded proof Eagles from my LCS to collectors but I'd never buy them to "stack".
Junk silver is great for SHTF scenario for small denom. To trade with if the dollar failed, But not for stacking. The "bang for the buck" isn't there selling it. That said I'd say the generics are the best deal and will get you close to spot.
I feel like you should have addressed 40% silver half dollars and 35% nickels just for your pov on it. For me it's low grade junk silver and hard to sell because it harder to refine.
Anyways good video I can't disagree with your opinion but I wouldn't keep that much junk silver. Just enough to carry in a bug out bag that won't burden you.
Also "shot silver" I agree. However. I do, do shot gold when priced right, I put it in fake potted plants dirt for long term storage. Never been stolen either, even noticed. If I need it at some point I'd screen it out and pan it. Silver shot doesn't have the value to make that worthwhile. Anyways nice video

Collectors and collecting traders also go off how many were actually made as a whole . So go of the rarity . The price over time is very much determined on how much another collector deems its value. They dont buy of the fact its 1oz silver . Jeez pokemon cards sell for thousands
