    When the Jacksons' version was climbing the charts here in the US I actually heard Mick Jackson's version one Saturday afternoon when they played it on American Bandstand. I always remembered Mick's way of pronouncing "boogie" as "boo-gay" in the chorus. I imagine Mick is happy that he at least got the royalties.

      I wonder if anyone ever asked, in the 80s after the original was no longer played, who D Jackson was, since there's no D Jackson in the (American) Jacksons.
      Interesting looking at UK & US charts for late 1978 & seeing both on there.

    Written by the Jackson, indeed.
    While Mick's version is very much feel good seventies, the Jackson 5's is forever, with Michael's soaring vocals immediately had me thinking " the other brothers can never do this life, you can't do without them vocal acrobatics ".
    Over here, we rarely hear the original, but then, by now the 70 been long eclipsed by massive (and bit misplaced ) 80s nostalgia. J5 just now dented the airwaves, that's how I got here. Blame it on the boogies, both of'm !

    • @crnkmnky
      @crnkmnky 4 года назад +9

      What are all these stupid whinging replies? Songwriting is a legitimate career, so is singing, so is playing an instrument. Intentionally selling your song to another artist is not aiding in a theft. 🙄

    • @crnkmnky
      @crnkmnky 4 года назад +3

      @rory clynes If I have to "watch closely" and read between the lines, then it's not "pretty clear" at all whether Mick was ripped off. There was a "typo" on the cover, but if anybody involved actually took his money (without his signing it away), I'd hope he's won it back already. You've parlayed this hearsay about stolen royalties into an implication that singing without songwriting is somehow morally inferior, and I take offense.
      I don't consider it a "problem" that good songwriting is rarer than good singing, because they're completely different things. Performing is more than just "singing." Not every songwriter is equipped or even interested in exchanging energy in a concert setting. In a way, The Beatles retiring from live performance to be studio dwellers was a decision to be songwriters over "singers." 🤷
      Any artist who hopes for a long career and sustainable income learns how to (co-)write anyway. _As you already know,_ The Jacksons wrote several hits of their own between 1978-1981.

    His song has been offered to the Jacksons by his own publisher, and he got to collect double royalties because of the double releases, so he didn't get robbed, like he said in a prior interview: "We did a great song, the Jacksons made a diamond out of it".

      @@annakeye Joe Jackson wasn't involved with any of the Jackson's albums especially the ones with CBS records. It was the producer who wrote that there. Watch the documentary called 'journey from Motown' about his off the wall album.

      Maybe the person who typed it was confused about Mick & David Jackson being unrelated to The Jacksons who wrote the other songs. Why is everyone so eager to blame it on greed or deceitfulness, when he already told you it was Boogie's fault.
      It doesn't matter what the record company printed on the sleeve, as long as the _right_ Michael Jackson gets the royalty checks in the mail. But I understand wanting the bragging rights too.

    What an unfortunate coincidence for these guys. It almost would have been worth it to change their name by deed poll just to avoid the confusion and the misplaced credit.

    • @astrecks
      @astrecks Год назад

      It's not really misplaced credit, Michael George Jackson (Mick Jackson) got the royalties and the UK exposure he probably would never have got if the Jackson's had not been offered the song by Mick's agent.

      Absolute bollocks every artist has inspirations.
      Elvis never wrote any of his songs but no matter. Jackson was a legendary talent .
      I can remember watching the thriller video when it first aired back in 83. It was massive. At the time we had only 4 tv channels in the u.k and it was on 2 of them.
      He was a phenomenal artist.
      I saw him live at wembley in 1988 and 1992. The thing with him even when he/thriller was at the the height of his fame 1983-1985 he never really got the respect as an artist he deserved.
