I used the streetcar to get from New Street station to the library for my evening class, until the lockdown happened. It was great but ever so expensive - GBP2.30 for a return ticket and that for a 5 minute journey! Most of the time I didn't even get chance to sit down as it took that long to get the ticket from the conductor. The streetcar is great though, I hope I'll get chance to use it again. Amazing that it runs on batteries and doesn't need the overhead lines, a conductor explained that to me because I asked about it.
It is not a Street Car my dear!!, it is called a TRAM. A street car is an American form of bus chassis with a tram body on it. it only uses batteries from Grand Central to the Library, the rest of the route from Grand Central to Wolverhampton uses overhead wires.
@@rufdymond Hey dude my man, so you can't win you turn to insults, my oh my, how childish. Little Kitty calls it a "Street Car", well it is not, it is a Metro Tram light rail system, which runs part of its route on City Streets in the centre of the City of Birmingham and The City of Wolverhampton as a tram / light train, then this route runs the other 10 miles on heavy rail, an ex Railway line. Sorry Dude but a 5 section metro tram is far larger than a single car street car that trundles around some American City doing around 20MPH, plus this tram / train travels up to 5 to 60 MPH on the heavy rail system. If you live in the West Midlands like I do you would know the difference. Yep and how is your backside my friend, and I have a wonderful life dude, I think you need one. I do not know you nor want to, you sound so boring and bloody insulting.
Leeds should have a tram system and another train station possibly for the Calder Valley line to skip the busy station to get to York we can call it Leeds Caldervale.
Hola! I wonder if this metro doesn't need the energy all of the time, because I can see that the "pantografo " is down sometimes... I drive the metro but it's impossible work with that piece down without touching the cable... sorry if I write wrong...
All the trams are fitted with batteries which are charged when the trams have contact with the wire, the trams are powered by the batteries when there is no overhead wire. I hope that helps you understand how the system works. I don't know if you are from Spain, but Granada has a similar system.
@@bobhodgestransportDVDs thanks for the information, Now I understand the system, our train system is ancient then, is located in Monterrey, México, the trains were made in 1991... greetings!
From Birmingham Grand Central to Wolverhampton a distance of around 15 mile it uses over head wires for its power. The reason it runs on batteries on this short extension is that there ar a load of historic buildings in the area and the power wires and poles would ruin the look of the area.
I'm a tram and I approve this video ding ding! Great footage!
Thank you very much.
I'm taking a trip with my daughter on the tram tomorrow from Birmingham to West Bromwich & spend a bit of time in West Bromwich.
I hope it's not to late but I don't think that the tram service is operating at the moment.

They are not called Street Cars, either trams or Metro.
Will have to go and have a ride and see it for myself, I recognise most of where it is but I need to get my bearings lol
Enjoy the ride1

It was a great shame that Leeds did not get the planned tram or trolleybus systems.
I’ve been down the extension of the line whilst I was there Bob
Looking forward to the next extension towards Edgbaston.
The edgebaston villige extension is open as it open in 2022@bobhodgestransportDVDs
Do the trams ring their bell automatically when they are accelerating or do the drivers do it?
I am pretty certain that the drivers operate the gongs.

Hello can you buy a day ticket ...
Yes you can, £4.40 for just the trams, you can also get a ticket that cover the tram and the West Midlands buses.
