4:50 original position of the pipa. Pipa is invented in Afghanistan (Gandhara) around b.c. 300's. On the ancient murals, its natural position like a guitar. (horizontal). Vertical position is seen in modern times.
Yes, Pipa was originally played in horizontal position with a piece of wood to pluck strings, not fingers, like what Japanese plays Biwa today. In China nowadays, there is also a Hokkien kind of genre that uses Pipa with fewer frets (like in ancient time) and plays it in horizontal position, however, it's played by fingers, not a piece of wood.

Both of y’all are amazing. I feel every traditional musical instrument needs a new pair of eyes. They’ve been laying around for so many years in the hand of one culture, it’s good to see it blended with new possibilities.
Nice video. I like how the video title says "American" rather than 'foreigner'. Foreigner is completely a relative term and referring to nationality rather than just calling someone 'foreigner' is more respectful from my perspective. I understand it to be a common term many Chinese people use to refer to non-Chinese and I've been referred to a number of times as a foreigner (in the USA where I live..). But ironically, many Chinese people are unduly considered 'foreigners' by others as they have ventured outside of China for economic and social opportunity.
