It’s really cool to see this game bringing so many fresh faces to the souls series. Reading people’s comments about how hard the bosses are and how hidden the lore is makes me feel like I’m playing demons’ souls for the first time. Good stuff!

My theory: the tarnished are warriors, mage's & others who serve/fought for godfrey and when he was banished and had his grace taken they suffered the same fate as him or just chose to leave with him.

So from the opening cinematic I would assume that "ALL" Tarnished have been technically "DEAD" this entire time until Grace blessed them once more. However other Tarnished speak of lives beyond the fog. So which is it, are all the Tarnished just dead brought back to true life?? Or maybe, given the saying is "Cross the Fog" does this mean those who have been claimed Tarnished float in non-existence?? Are the Tarnished souls that have been cast out of existence entirely until Grace decided to bring their souls back from the void of oblivion??
Bit late but I've been thinking about it, so I do believe that alot of the tarnished we see now are descendants of Godfreys original army that sailed beyond the fog and died in those far off lands. Or they are descendants of/currently are ones that were banished more recently beyond the fog and died only to be called back to the lands between and revived by grace. The majority of tarnished revived and called back in the beginning from beyond the fog are great and good contenders for the throne. But it seems like as these tarnished lost motivation, faith or just took too long so the greater will started to call nonamed tarnished out of desperation. Eg: bogart, Rodrika, the player character. Just as a final desperate bid for elden Lord. But I do believe that beyond the fog is a physical tangible land where thousands of tarnished lived died and fought after being banished. I did read alot of item descriptions and I know for a fact that they did physically sail away in boats when banished and stripped of their grace, due to a weapon that is literally an anchor of one of those ships. Sorry if this doesn't make much sense lol
death isn’t really a thing in elden ring, something about a black dagger idk much but it could be something like that, like they’re physically dead but not fully actually dead and can still somehow come back ?

I’ve spent over 30 hours playing Elden ring now and I’ve started to understand a little bit about what’s going on. You have to really find certain characters to understand tidbits here and there and also understand the areas you’re in. Like “what am I fighting?” “Why are these knights here?” The names of the items they’re dropping. Like the godrick knights etc. it all slowly unravels as you get into the game. You just have to listen to what characters tell you and what snippets you find. It makes sense
i think it seems something like, the god queen's kingdom fell apart during the long night or whatever and each of her councilors took a piece of the ring to create their own petty kingdoms... but if tarnished are outsiders, why would we want to recreate the kingdoms?

I see some people making complaints about recycled enemies but they don't realize they have lore reasons for every enemy placement. I think the only enemy I was like "okay how are there this many of you" was the Leo misbegotten
This is completely normal mate lol. My advice would be; listen to the NPC dialogue, read the item descriptions, and take note of the environment. The beauty of From's games is that the story and themes are as much a product of your own interpretation as anything else.

"Elden Ring STORY Explained" I saw this title expecting to have the story explained not a bunch of theory. The way you presented your infos made things confusing, I coukdnt tell which were actual "facts" from the lore and which were your own theories. I just wanted the lore explained or at least specify in the title that this was theories and not the actual lore of the game
The only person who could provide this for you is the game director, Hidetaka Miazaki. And he's very cagey regarding any "definitive" version, he designs his story and its themes with interpretation in mind. In short any facts are going to be strung together with conjecture and interpretation. Vaatividya has made a career piggybacking off interpreting From's lore, and while he doesn't have a definitive answer to anything his channel might be more what you were looking for.
The thing that most bother me is why does everyone hate us that much? Only a few people don't attack us tarnished right away, but most of them either try to kill us or flee Hell, even in Stormveil, the soldiers fought an inside demi-human rebellion, and when you come here they almost side up against you Why? Your version of "back-up godly warriors" would make sense if anyone wouldn't try to kill us at sight, and the "banned by Markika with Godfrey" doesn't seem to be enough either. Some could feel threatened, but I felt like it was targeted by a public genocide, that it was normal and encouraged to hate and kill tarnished.
What's also cool is some of these reasons are stated if you start out as a cleric you find out you get Banished for the incantation you start out with. Literally for adding the giants into the story of the erdtree at all. It might make sense for some character reasons too like nightfolk basically being albunaric. Not being a real person could lead to exile too
So is the tarnished immortal or not? I know in souls games the chosen undead basically is but there's things that happen in elden ring that suggest tarnished are not. Aside coming back to life after every death there are some inconsistencies as we see other tarnished die or are afraid of dying. For example the volcano manor whole assassates tarnished and Rykard tries to make you one with him. Then there's Godrick who apparently grafts tarnished. It seems like tarnished die all the time except you as the protag.
There's definitely something to be said for a more straightforward take on Elden Ring's lore, and I like how you use examples from real world (excommunication) and mythology (Valhalla) to get your points across. Not everything has to be a Vaati deep dive and as someone who's trying to remain spoiler free the two vids you've done so far are great. Keep it up.
Considering your world and other worlds are invaded, even by NPCs, I think each tarnished is operating within their universe where they are the hero of their story. Hence why ever NPC who invaded seems to be surprised when they lose.
I've seen like 4-5 videos about elden Ring's story. I'm trying to find out what the hell is going on with the least amount of spoilers possible. Instead of making a simple and an understandable video, creators are trying to immerse me in the story. But I just don't understand the story !!
That is because nothing about the souls series and the stories within them are simple. Even within the game itself, there are characters within it that do not understand the world around them and may even give the player false/contradictory information, much like a teacher in primary school can direct their students with false or "personalized" information while believing it to be true. In a more basic sense, even our own history is retold, assumed, and twisted over time with different minds adding or subtracting new bits of information. The best example of this in the game is Gideon the "All Knowing", as he proclaims- even he is blind to some of the happenings within the story that we (the tarnished) experience. It's hard to explain the entirety of any story without first backtracking and going over all of the information available to build a better understanding. It's also hard to simply say "this is what is happening and why" in a short video, and especially one without spoilers attached. The truth is, the shorter the explanation, the more questions you will have anyway- at least with subject matter like Elden Ring. If you haven't beaten the game by now, spend time reading the texts the game gives you, look at the items you loot and their descriptions, learn and listen to the characters you defeat/befriend. Every enemy you encounter has a story to tell when it comes to Elden Ring. It's a part of the beauty of this game. It may not seem like it but the story is not as convoluted as it appears, it just takes time to study all of what is in front of you (or, just watch some lore videos)!
The content is nice but you need to vary your intonation of the words and phrases. It quickly became so repetative that the phrase intonation was the only thing i heard. The phrase "melody" is reused in every sentance if you know what i mean. Stopped me from listning to the finish sadly. Might be a me thing but thought you might want to know and perhaps work on it in future vids. Best of luck!
Id like to believe we were godfreys strongest warrior a unrecognisable face due to like 90% kf the starter classes hides their face but master in all the one who was possibly as strong as godfrey himself maybe thats what i love to think
When I finished a certain NPC’s long ass quest line, I was left absolutely dumbfounded. Surprise lore after surprise lore. It shook everything I thought I knew about Elden Rings world at the very core. Even the “fundamentals” of it, like in the trailers. To anyone who’s still in early-mid game, I implore you to make sure you’ve double and triple checked everything, and pay attention to items and NPC dialogue. You do NOT wanna miss this quest line

If we think lorewise the tarnished only died two times in the game. In the beginning and by litting up the erdtree. But everything else he killed in first try everything use see and they dont come back they die permanently. By the end of the game the land between is cleared anyway from any threat
I think by now we all know the tarnished are the soldiers and their descendants of Godfrey's army after Marika took their grace away and banished them. What I'm curious about is what differentiates them from non-tarnished, since there are several npcs and bosses in thr game that know you're a tarnished just by looking at you. Do tarnished have some brand or birthmark on their face? Do they have certain eyes? Why is it that I csn walk up to an npc I've never met before and their first words to me are "foul tarnished"?
What if the tarnished are just great people in some way, Gideon was knowledgeable, Godfrey was mighty, Fia followed her duty no matter how fowl, The dung eater was a master of corruption, gold mask again was greatly knowledgeable, and our character had incredible willpower.

I have bigger questions like how did we end up in the chapel of anticipation with a dead maiden ? Did we leave the lands between and come back or did we just die here and return to life here ? And if we did die here why did we even go to the chapel to begin with ? If we left and returned did we land our ship from the sea on the island of the chapel ? Dark souls and Sekiro give you a backstory of how we got there elden ring just makes me ask more questions about how us as a tarnished got back to the lands between
Firstly... this has to be the Matrix Explained guy. Love that channel. Secondly, thanks for the vid. I bounced off ER because the beginning narrative seemed disjointed. But after this I have way more context than 'ye old tarnished not living or dead!'. I feel I can go back and actually have a good time with it. Thanks!

Im still think the idea of Tarnish and the Grace Teleports are just lazy Dark Souls ideas . . . In dark souls the undead are the ones to solve all, not you but literally any one who can fight and the bonfires are mini-first flames linked to the flame so it can stay longer Here is like you are the choosen one (noooo but you have a room of heroes all tarnished revive people) yes but all of them dont do a SH&T you do all the work And the grace guiden you WORKS like the Ghost of T. With the wind and the spirits. But doesnt work with the Teleports like how is even possible doesnt break the ideas of armies and things in the lore Very lazy compare to other games, even Bloodborne has a good explanation 😂😂😂
My first souls game. It was a slow start into the game, but a random part of the map made me look into the lore, trying to figure out what the hell happened or why something was and since then the game is a Whole new world. Each boss I understand better and the area I'm in. Some of the best. Worldbuilding I've EVER seen. Very happy to have been introduced to FromSoft games, very excited for more.
bloodborne will absolutely blow you away with how mindblowingly fascinating the lore is. My personal advice: don't watch any videos about bloodborne before playing it. Some moments hit better when they're a surprise
i still dont understand who's guiding us ... is it the Erdtree/Greater Will? or is it Marika? ... if its the Erdtree/GW, then why does it stop us from entering into the tree near the end of the game? Also, why would the GW want us to mend the Elden Ring and become Elden Lord if doing so requires us to kill the Elden Beast, which is the representative of the Greater Will itself, so wtf? ... and if it's Marika who's guiding us, then why would she want us to mend the Elden Ring when she was the one who shattered it in the first place? ... neither explanation makes any sense to me unless im missing a major plot point. Also, why did Radagon and Marika merge into one being, or were they always one being? ... again, wtf lmao
It was a problem in demonsouls having most enemy’s the same size making it harder to see them when fighting so they made everything bigger in the next games. Lore wise idk maybe genetics
All of this feels like a reach... We know that the tarnished were banished long ago. Godfrey lost his grace and left the lands between with all his kinfolk (tarnished). Aslo we know that some tarnished travel back to the lands between, and other are summoned there by the Erdtree. Roderika was one of those sent to the lands between even tho she couldn't see the guidance of grace. On the other hand, Bogart says how he was summoned there by the Erdtree, but he also couldn't see the guidance at all, and that's when he mentions that there might be something wrong with the Erdtree. I don't believe our character was banished from the lands between, they might have never even seen the place before the start of the game (that's basically how it works in every FromSoft game, your character doesn't know the place nor the history of it). It just happened to be that we were just another tarnished that could see the guidance. Nothing special about us, that's the point of these games, we never have something special, and we were just summoned by the Erdtree just like it summoned many before us.
I've played 287 hours. So far, this is what I've found out. The Tarnished are considered by Marika as useless and therefore unfit for grace. Are they dead? In a way, yes. But they're also alive. Like people stuck between life and death.
Instead of this over complicating definition of a tarnished can we all just agree that if you are a human you are tarnished. No other race seems to be tarnished except humans.
I'd really recommend doing a little grinding, try to think of this as more of an MMO with souls combat. You can get to level 50 or 60 without beating the first boss. I'm level 110 and still haven't unlocked everything or beaten a number of bosses

The elden ring, is a ring made up of a vast number of runes. The elden ring was held by the elden lord who ruled over all and kept thing in order. Someone stole a piece of it, causing it to shatter and split apart every thing.
Interested concept. All endings of the Elden ring, could be Miazaki's sapling ideas for past and future games. Elden Ring is a world before possibility.

The best example of this in the game is Gideon the "All Knowing", as he proclaims- even he is blind to some of the happenings within the story that we (the tarnished) experience. It's hard to explain the entirety of any story without first backtracking and going over all of the information available to build a better understanding. It's also hard to simply say "this is what is happening and why" in a short video, and especially one without spoilers attached. The truth is, the shorter the explanation, the more questions you will have anyway- at least with subject matter like Elden Ring.
If you haven't beaten the game by now, spend time reading the texts the game gives you, look at the items you loot and their descriptions, learn and listen to the characters you defeat/befriend. Every enemy you encounter has a story to tell when it comes to Elden Ring. It's a part of the beauty of this game. It may not seem like it but the story is not as convoluted as it appears, it just takes time to study all of what is in front of you (or, just watch some lore videos)!
First souls game. I gotta admit tho it’s pretty fun especially when you get good gear from just exploring and beating bosses
Why do you speak with an upward cadence at the end of every sentence? It sounds so unnatural!
The content is nice but you need to vary your intonation of the words and phrases. It quickly became so repetative that the phrase intonation was the only thing i heard. The phrase "melody" is reused in every sentance if you know what i mean. Stopped me from listning to the finish sadly.

When I finished a certain NPC’s long ass quest line, I was left absolutely dumbfounded. Surprise lore after surprise lore. It shook everything I thought I knew about Elden Rings world at the very core. Even the “fundamentals” of it, like in the trailers. To anyone who’s still in early-mid game, I implore you to make sure you’ve double and triple checked everything, and pay attention to items and NPC dialogue. You do NOT wanna miss this quest line

If we think lorewise the tarnished only died two times in the game. In the beginning and by litting up the erdtree. But everything else he killed in first try everything use see and they dont come back they die permanently. By the end of the game the land between is cleared anyway from any threat

I think by now we all know the tarnished are the soldiers and their descendants of Godfrey's army after Marika took their grace away and banished them. What I'm curious about is what differentiates them from non-tarnished, since there are several npcs and bosses in thr game that know you're a tarnished just by looking at you. Do tarnished have some brand or birthmark on their face? Do they have certain eyes? Why is it that I csn walk up to an npc I've never met before and their first words to me are "foul tarnished"?
I'll bet they just sense it, like some aura.
What if the tarnished are just great people in some way, Gideon was knowledgeable, Godfrey was mighty, Fia followed her duty no matter how fowl, The dung eater was a master of corruption, gold mask again was greatly knowledgeable, and our character had incredible willpower.
Gold mask is incredibly good. Not knowledgeable. These are different. Ofnir was a traitor and a murderer.

I have bigger questions like how did we end up in the chapel of anticipation with a dead maiden ? Did we leave the lands between and come back or did we just die here and return to life here ? And if we did die here why did we even go to the chapel to begin with ? If we left and returned did we land our ship from the sea on the island of the chapel ? Dark souls and Sekiro give you a backstory of how we got there elden ring just makes me ask more questions about how us as a tarnished got back to the lands between

Im still think the idea of Tarnish and the Grace Teleports are just lazy Dark Souls ideas . . .
In dark souls the undead are the ones to solve all, not you but literally any one who can fight and the bonfires are mini-first flames linked to the flame so it can stay longer

My first souls game. It was a slow start into the game, but a random part of the map made me look into the lore, trying to figure out what the hell happened or why something was and since then the game is a Whole new world. Each boss I understand better and the area I'm in. Some of the best. Worldbuilding I've EVER seen. Very happy to have been introduced to FromSoft games, very excited for more.
bloodborne will absolutely blow you away with how mindblowingly fascinating the lore is. My personal advice: don't watch any videos about bloodborne before playing it. Some moments hit better when they're a surprise
i still dont understand who's guiding us ... is it the Erdtree/Greater Will? or is it Marika? ... if its the Erdtree/GW, then why does it stop us from entering into the tree near the end of the game? Also, why would the GW want us to mend the Elden Ring and become Elden Lord if doing so requires us to kill the Elden Beast, which is the representative of the Greater Will itself, so wtf? ... and if it's Marika who's guiding us, then why would she want us to mend the Elden Ring when she was the one who shattered it in the first place? ... neither explanation makes any sense to me unless im missing a major plot point. Also, why did Radagon and Marika merge into one being, or were they always one being? ... again, wtf lmao

It's just an artistic choice and it makes them appear more imposing. After you kill Godrick the Grafted you will see his real size.
They are manlets. That's why the tarnished were exiled.

It was a problem in demonsouls having most enemy’s the same size making it harder to see them when fighting so they made everything bigger in the next games. Lore wise idk maybe genetics

All of this feels like a reach... We know that the tarnished were banished long ago. Godfrey lost his grace and left the lands between with all his kinfolk (tarnished). Aslo we know that some tarnished travel back to the lands between, and other are summoned there by the Erdtree. Roderika was one of those sent to the lands between even tho she couldn't see the guidance of grace. On the other hand, Bogart says how he was summoned there by the Erdtree, but he also couldn't see the guidance at all, and that's when he mentions that there might be something wrong with the Erdtree.
I don't believe our character was banished from the lands between, they might have never even seen the place before the start of the game (that's basically how it works in every FromSoft game, your character doesn't know the place nor the history of it). It just happened to be that we were just another tarnished that could see the guidance. Nothing special about us, that's the point of these games, we never have something special, and we were just summoned by the Erdtree just like it summoned many before us.

I've played 287 hours. So far, this is what I've found out. The Tarnished are considered by Marika as useless and therefore unfit for grace. Are they dead? In a way, yes. But they're also alive. Like people stuck between life and death.
Just a question: where you playing legend of zelda ( ocarina if time onward ) , at some point you call the eerdtree the deku-tree which is LoZ:OoT

5 hours in and still cant beat first boss

I'd really recommend doing a little grinding, try to think of this as more of an MMO with souls combat. You can get to level 50 or 60 without beating the first boss. I'm level 110 and still haven't unlocked everything or beaten a number of bosses
You have to explore the south part of the map before the first boss, I cheesed the first boss and went back south and easily beat the bosses
3rd day gaming (4-5hrs total) and still cant beat margit. First souls game for me but i have developed immensly and will beat him tomorrow!

It was a ring until the “shattering” now all the “lords” hold pieces. Godrick for example has one.
The elden ring, is a ring made up of a vast number of runes. The elden ring was held by the elden lord who ruled over all and kept thing in order. Someone stole a piece of it, causing it to shatter and split apart every thing.
That's good lore and all but.... WHY THE FUCK DO I KNOW HOW TO USE EVERY WEAPON
