That's a Wrap!

  • We are harvesting our second cutting of hay and have decided to make balayage (haylage in bale form). The hay is baled at about 60% moisture and then wrapped in airtight plastic. This seals it to keep air out and the hay will ferment and become silage/haylage. This improves the digestibility and nutritional content of the hay. We have updates on our lambs and kids. The lambs are doing well with the exception of one. He was lethargic and when checked, very anemic. This is most likely due to a severe case of barber pole worms. We dewormed him but unfortunately, he died the following day. He had some deformities at birth, and I suspect he may have had other issues internally that we were not aware of. We sent Olive, one of our guardian dog puppies to her new home along with 2 of the kids. The general contractor for our new home purchased them and is starting a small farm. We are off for a long weekend to New York City so our friends once again will be monitoring the farm while we are away. Thanks for joining us at Norwal Farm.

Thanks Craig. It hit him really fast so, not much chance to intervene. He never has been quite right. He was a slow grower so I'm thinking he may have had other issues internally. As the saying goes, if you have livestock, you will have dead stock. It's only our first loss so, not too bad.
