Back from Tasmania with some holiday pics and a radio. I think it's a Radiola Model 563MAZ.

Thanks to City Park Radio, Launceston, Tasmania, for allowing me to video their museum and studio
cityparkradio....
Thanks to Senoritas Art Workshop and Nikki Carter Art for her hospitality, wine and awesome paella, made by the one and only Juan

Hi Don, your road trip looked amazing with some magic scenery and very interesting places to visit. Makes me want to visit.
Im sure you will revive the radiola .
I have one exactly the same but baby blue colour in great condition aswell, very nice looking radios.looking forward to the next video.
love the travelogue, thanks Don
Enjoyed your holiday snaps! Can't believe how many old radios there were in the antique shops - the radio museum was also very interesting. Keep up the good work!
Cheers. Glad you enjoyed it.
Tasmania looks lovely Don. I bet you had a great time. Pub car parks are always the best for camping 😉. The radio museum had some very interesting sets in it and a nice studio. Then you went over the river Tamar which is here in Devon as well as Devonport. You should have popped in for a beer 😊. Nice neat job on the capacitors. I’m sure you can sort it though. Cheers Graham
Pleasant video,interesting radio
Really liked the trip pics. Those old buildings are a great place to reminisce the past. Every time I go into an old building, the smells takes me back in time when I was a kid. That radio might just give you a little bit of a workout. Sharpens the mind… at least that’s what I hear😊.
I’m the same Jim, also with old cars.
What a nice place, Don. Thanks so much for sharing! Reminds me so much of the troubled South Africa I left in 1985, never to return....
Hi Blitz. Never imagined that South Africa would be like that.
How very sad to have to leave your country and never return!
To see the lovely location. Thanks so much again for sharing.
Hi Stephen. Glad you enjoyed the video. It was great to get away to a cooler climate in the middle of Summer.
Cheers
Thanks for taking us along.
Glad you enjoyed
What a beautiful place to have a holiday. Good luck with getting this radio working. See you on the next. 👍
Cheers Terry. Yes it really is a beautiful place!
You’ve got quite a job ahead of you 😊 just the cleaning … oh boy. Anyway, I’m looking forward to the next instalment. Thanks for the look at Tasmania. Enjoyed that.
Cheers Manuel. Yes I think this little radio has a few tricks up its sleeve. I suspect the output valve (6AQ5) is cooked due to leaky caps, but I haven't had time to really look at it yet and I don't have a spare one of those. I'll have to pay a visit to my friend with the valve tester.
I gave the case a good scrub with a toothbrush and some spray & wipe in the laundry tub. It came up very well but is a bit yellowed. It might be a case for the Retro Bright treatment that Dave Tipton advocates. Anyway, we'll see...
Don...you legend...
Thanks for sharing your Tasmanian Travelogue. Very scenic, and those camper van conversions are a great way to travel. Looking forward to your fault-finding adventure.
Hi Don
Yes the camper vans are a great way to travel. There are so many places to camp for free. We also have a Toyota Coaster bus fitted out as a camper but it wasn't practical to take it to Tasmania for a short holiday due to the distance.
Cheers
I've been to Tassie twice for work and only saw Hobart both times unfortunately; always wanted to explore inland. I would have snapped up that IVO meter in a heartbeat lol
Great video Don and I'm sure the radiola will end up being an easy fix and I hope the clock still works.
Good to see you back. Looking forward to see this one coming along
Thanks Maarten. Yes I think this one will be interesting!
don fantastic travels and radio
Cheers Andy. Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Don,
The places you visited in Tasmania are invitingly picturesque: certainly a vacation to fondly remember for many years to come.
I for one feel very confident you will have diagnosed and cured the reason for the radio not working at present, done a full IF & RF alignment, and have the clock functional well within the next episode ………unless, of course, something drastic lurks within that radio none of us, including your self, know about at present ……not wanting to tempt fate! Loved viewing this video my friend: very much looking forward to the next episode.
Best regards from Phil
Cheers Phil. Glad you enjoyed it!
I have the radio speaking to me again and I can see what's wrong with the clock. Whether I can fix it is another matter! We'll see.
Looks like a wonderful relaxing place for holiday. Glad you shared this, I knew little about Tasmania besides "devils"
Hi Mark
I have been there once before, many years ago but I had forgotten how beautiful it is. We will certainly be going back! We didn't even see a devil. I guess they are shy of people.
Tasmania looked beautiful, i bet that trip blew out all the mental stress of life.
It's always amazing how much better you can feel :-D
The pub or the watering hole, i was waiting for that lol.
And you found a victim errr radio i mean :-D
It looks complete, hopefully the case can be retro brighted.
I know you will make it a million times better :-D
Hi
Yes Tassie is a very pretty little place. We'll certainly be going back again.
The case cleaned up quite well but is a bit yellowed. Retro bright might be the go. I'll have to ask Dave Tipton about the details.
Cheers mate
Across the Richmond Bridge and up the hill is a beautiful church St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Richmond.
Lovely fittings and a beautiful lead light glass window. I don’t know if you visited the church but it’s a well known heritage treasure of Van Diemen’s Land.
The well made Richmond Bridge known for its clever ingenuity design of the keystone structure, to provide such long lasting strength.
Not much has changed in 33 years to the month! An enjoyable video just how I remember the Tasmania Evergreen Tour in the early 90’s.
Thank you Don. You’re all refreshed now. 😁
Hi Pete
I remember learning about Richmond Bridge at school so it was a "must". I was amazed that it still carries traffic. Sadly I didn't visit the church but we will definitely be back again before too long.
@@Donno308 Hello Don, the Richmond Bridge had a load limit sign on approaching.
Did you see the load limit sign? From memory it was 25 tonnes but I don’t know how this is enforced.
That’s some weight. 😁 This was 33 years ago though.
@@Leo6009 Hi Pete
I don't recall seeing the load limit sign. Pretty good though, considering its designer could not have envisaged motor traffic.
@@Donno308 Yes and mainly constructed for the passage of convicts from Hobart Town towards Port Arthur Penal Settlement and carts carrying wheat due to the need to cross the Coal River, which went into flood making crossing risky.
Richmond Bridge construction started 200 years ago in 1823. 😁 It’s been a milestone so to speak.
Cracking video - thank you so much for taking the time and effort to show the Tanzanian experience - as I am in the UK - it's the only way I am lp
Glad you enjoyed it!
Tasmania is a nice place to holiday in the summer, when it doesn't rain too much. As for the radio you could have a faulty oscillator coil or maybe a dud valve or? It is good that you are back!
Hope you enjoyed your holiday. Bet you really enjoyed that spectacular radio museum. Love that railway museum in
Queenstown with those beautiful carriages. Ride in style. Good old Kevin Chant saves the day again. But he didn't reload
the file back onto the web for some reason so no one can read it. The radio's black plastic capacitors were cooked in the many summers being in a garage after the E caps made the radio buzz or a tube gave up the ghost. Will see in part 2.
Hi. Yes, Good ol' Kevin Chant to the rescue. I checked and the file still seems to be there.
I think the output tube is cooked due to a leaky grid capacitor. We'll see.
Cheers
I have to say your trip to Tasmania made me feel ready for a holiday. Some great shots of the coastal roads. I saw a couple of radios I have in the video at the antiques shops and the museum. A Bush DAC10 in one antique shop and a Russian Vega Selena in the Museum. The one you're working on looks to be going OK. I reckon the clock will just need cleaning and oiling with some clock spec oil - I don't think they go wrong much.
Hi
Yes Tassie is a beautiful place.
The little Radiola is coming along ok and is now speaking to me again.
I haven't started on the clock. I noticed the motor is turning. I guess the gears are all gummed up.
I hope I can sort it out. There's a lot of little parts to get back together!
Hi Don,
Thanks for sharing your holiday, Tasmania looks lovely 👍
I have the exact same one once of those 1948 Olympics HMV radios lined up here as my next project....I didn't think they were worth that much money though!
Hi John. I would love to have one of those but they don't come up very often. The prices in that shop weren't too bad generally but the Olympics radio was, I think, way over priced. I should have picked up that AVO meter though!
I was supposed to visit Tasmania just after New Year but the ship got diverted. At least now I've seen a bit of it. 😍😂
Cheers Bob. Hopefully you'll get there some day!
Great Tassie travelogue Don. We missed Queenstown somehow, I'll have to go back, it looks nice. We had lunch at Coles Bay, I forgot until you showed the Cafe. I have been looking for that model radio with the clock, they come up from time to time but are usually cracked or too far gone. I'm interested to see what you find wrong with it. I did a clock in a radio once, it's coil was open, I ordered wire from the US, it was so fine I couldn't see it. I used my battery drill to wind it, it took 3 battery charges to fill the spool. It did work though. Thanks for the video Don.
Hi David,
Yes, Queenstown was an interesting place and well worth the visit. The drive in and out is spectacular. Apart from the steam train, I prefer Coles Bay though. Much more laid back.
I started back at work today and haven't had time to have much of a look at the radio again but the case did clean up quite well. I may need a bit of Retro Bright treatment to bring it back to the original colour. I suspect the 6AQ5 output valve is cooked due to a leaky grid coupling cap.
I hope the coil in the clock isn't open. If it is I might be negotiating for your coil winding skills and equipment!
Cheers David
@@Donno308 Anytime Don 👍
Tasmania looks really nice!
Cheers Timothy. Yes it really is a beautiful place. Definitely going back there!
Hey Don, Tazzy looks amazing but don't tell me you arranged the holiday just to see the radio museum???? Can't blame you if you did (ha ha). Looking forward to this project mate. Looks like this old lady may have some surprises along the way. All the best from the UK.
Hi Stephen
I must admit the radio museum was on my "must do" list before I left. It was awesome and I don't thing my video did it justice.
Yes I think this radio has a few tricks up its sleeve.
Cheers
Hi Don, loved the holiday video from Tasmania! It seems radio prices in those antique shops are a bit steep. And they drive on the wrong side of the road in Tazzie as well. 😊
Ha ha! Yes, we all drive on the wrong side of the road down here, but it's ok because we're all upside down!
Enjoyed your vacation shots, you did a nice job of filming.
The antique shop radio prices look like they used E-bay as a guide, hope they worked for thous prices.
Hi Mack.
Yes the prices were a bit over the top. In any case the difficulty of getting anything I bought back to Perth made it all too hard. The postage would be as much as the cost of the radio. The only exception is that AVO meter I saw in Launceston. I should have grabbed that!
Cheers
Hi Don. Nice photo and video editing on the Tassie trip, looks like you enjoyed the time away.
Be interested to see how that Radiola clock radio turns out too, I've not seen one like that in the flesh.
Hi Chris. Yes I think I've got a bit of a job ahead of me, both with the clock and the radio.
Cheers
41:39 The oscillator's not running? I didn't know it had legs! LOL
Good day Don, I have just got one radio of the same model as yours. You have mentioned about thr gentleman Frankie Chan for the circuit diagram. How can I get one from him or some other sources? Thanks Alan.
Hi Alan. His website is www.kevinchant.com/
You can download the schematics from there. Or if you send me an email at donno1955@hotmail.com I will send you the specific schematic for this radio.
Cheers
Looks like you had an amazing time in Tasmania. I hope the weather was as good as it looks in the video the whole time.
Glad you are back of course. Missed the radio adventures. Am I allowed to us that phrase here :).
Hi Brendan. I doubt that Dave would object, although I avoid using that phrase myself!
Cheers
We're off to Tassie next year Don, thanks for this Video, lots of info on whats there.
Looking forward to what you find with the Radiola too !
Cheers, Baz
Sounds great! You'll love it!
Cheers
My Goodness! Those radio prices! Even taking account of the current difference in relative exchange values of US greenbacks and Australian dollarydoos those seem way over the top! Still, some interesting looking sets.
Pity she didn't just fire up, but i have faith you'll get her going.
Hi Dennis
Radio prices are generally high in Australia - for example the little Radiola clock radio I bought was advertised at $100 on Facebook marketplace. I managed to talk him down to $60 but that's typical. The prices in the shops in Tasmania were over the top though. Admittedly that HMV Olympic radio is quite rare but from memory they wanted $500+. They obviously want to keep it as a display piece for a very long time!
Yes I guess I'll get the radio going. Work has been busy this week so I haven't had much time but I'll have a poke at it on the weekend.
Cheers
Very nice Don. You didn’t make it to New Norfolk then?! I would have stood you a cold one.
Hi David. Yes, we did go through New Norfolk. If I'd known you were there I would have stopped in for a cold one! That was the day the Tasman Bridge was blocked due to a truck rollover. We were stuck in the Hobart traffic for hours and ended up heading to New Norfolk to get across the bridge and back to the Colebrook Tavern where we planned to camp for the night. Ended up getting there after dark and the pub (with the "Open 7 Days" sign) was closed Mondays & Tuesdays. We were wondering which 7 of the remaining 5 days they were open lol.
Anyway, maybe next time.
Cheers
Tasmania is beautiful, but radio prices seem quite high.
Hi Vic. I thought the same about the radio prices. Anyway I didn't buy one because of the difficulties and added cost to get it back home to WA.
Cheers
Hi there and thanks Don! I have followed your channel since the beginning but have dragged behind lately but have catch up now. In -95 I lived outside Mukinbudin near Bonnie rock, still remember the weather maps on tellie with 4 places marked, if I remember right Perth, Albany, Merridin and, Bonnie rock, a wheatbin and an old school... I drove around Australia and down in the middle in my Holden Premiere (even better...) so your first roadtrip really got the feeling back becouse its was a life experience, i even enjoied the Nullarbor but I never get to Tasmania so it was really nice to watch some from your trip.
But the big question is, can you still get a Redback from Mathilda bay brewery?
Hi Leif. Not too sure about the Redback. I haven't seen it around for ages.
Driving around Australia in a Holden Premier would be an awesome way to go!
Sorry for the delay in responding. For some reason my comments seem to disappear sometimes.
Cheers
@@Donno308 That Brewery mowed away what I understand. Last night in Australia before flying home to Sweden I was walking around ending up in a pub where they told me to try a Redback, bloody god, but I had a flight to catch....
That car was really nice and really Aussie... That trip was a life experience.
@@leif.Jakobsson You can get Redback on tap in many places and I recently noticed the cans at the local bottle shop. So it's still around!
@@Donno308 Thanks for answering stupid questions...
@@leif.Jakobsson Ha ha! There's no such thing as a stupid question!
10:16 I'm a former community radio presenter myself so this part of your video is of some interest to me, however, I'm a *former* presenter because I was *unjustly* expelled from the station to which I gave 10 years of my life, based on lies and malice from the then-President and committee.
@neilforbes416 i visited the station ten years ago which was a waste of time. The radio presenter I forgot his name but i remember the program he hosted called the BBQ shift as a radio presenter myself i never heard so much rubbish he came out with the station had to change its format due to complaints from nursing homes and day centres that people during the day playing hard rock music and presenters sounded intoxicated. Then he was going on how the station is one of the top radio stations in Australia. Another former radio announcer i knew visited radio 2GLA FM Foster-Tuncurry he said the station (2GLA) was really good.Getting back to my visit he showed me the mixing desk and the turntables and the computer set up. then he said to me that i thought it was very unusual and that is *you don't have to be a professional to be a radio presenter you got to sound like one* that's where you have to do an audition if they find you are not to have a professional voice they wont take you on. Yes its a big joke mind you Port Stephens is a nice area but if you have a community radio station is operate like that its not going to do the community and justice as it is community radio radio for the community.
22:16 I don't think that's a power outlet on the back of this set. I believe it's just a place to plug in to hold the cord while the set's in transit(you just push the rest of the cord into the body of the set).
Okay, I'm wrong! But geez they were a bit ahead of their time providing a power outlet on something like this. What would you plug into that socket?
@@neilforbes416 its in its right location in comparison today you can actully remove the cord as your radio would be battery powered these days
@@neilforbes416 i assume they had a three hole slots in those days as we do today
Hi Don, looks like you had a great holiday. Must get back there. The AVO was a bargan and the HMV I haven't seen before.
I have three of the clock radios. The clocks are Smiths of London and can be problematic, but are fixable. Switch contacts are the first port of call, and loose or broken gears also a problem. It may just need the contacts cleaning and a general lubrication, or a trip to a jeweler as did one of mine. Yours looks particularly good as it has all the knobs, but like so many of them needs a good scrub. I havent seen a radio with the 240 volt output. I suspect it might have something to do with the different states having their own electrical standards at the time. The outlet was for a tea maker!
I have Philips, STC, HMV variants. And I did a video on the 563MA variant here ruclips.net/video/HTimRURBjZY/видео.html and photos of the earlier 561MA (1953 to 1955) here electrosound.com.au/awa-461ma/
Hi Andrew. Yes I was kicking myself for not picking up that AVO meter. It was early in the trip and I was determined not to buy too much stuff due to the cost of excess baggage. I was doing really well but then my wife, who has an extensive beer can collection, bought about 15 cans of beer for her collection. That left me wondering why the hell I didn't buy that AVO. So I ended up buying that Radiola anyway.
Thanks for the links to those videos. I'll have a look later this evening. I think (based on not much more than a hunch) my radio has a cooked output tube due to a leaky grid coupling cap.
We'll see.
Cheers
@@Donno308 Hi Don, you'll never guess what I picked up at an estate sale yesterday. A brand new, in box, replacement clock for a 469MA/563MA! Looking at it, all the electrical contacts are badly tarnished, So as I said before clean zee contacts! I have a forth one where the clock isn't working at all, so I'll do that in a few weeks. About to investigate no hot water, grrr...
@@electrosoundaust Good luck with the hot water! I've got the clock running again but I don't know for how long. The gears are very worn.
Please, the music in loop, very annoying. Apart of them, very nice and different video!
Hi Carlos
Yes I know the music is annoying but don't know what else to do. I will get into trouble with copyright if I use any published music so I have to use "Royalty Free" music, which is pretty boring.
I guess I could have varied the music or maybe silence would have been better.
Anyway thanks for the feedback and I'll try a different approach next time.
Thanks for watching.
