- President Joe Biden, 81, took naps each of the six days during his debate preparation, which never started before 11:00 a.m., according to a source familiar with the process, as reported by the New York Times. The report also mentioned that Biden's "lapses" are becoming "increasingly common and worrisome."
The leak reflects growing frustration within the Biden campaign, which is grappling with the fallout from a poor debate performance and subsequent calls for Biden to withdraw from the race. This was the second critical leak about Biden on Tuesday. White House spokesman Andrew Bates denied both reports.
Biden admitted during a fundraiser on Tuesday that his back-to-back trips to Europe had affected his rest. According to multiple sources cited by the Times, Biden was so exhausted from the trips that his debate prep was shortened by two days to allow him to rest before rehearsals began with advisers at Camp David. The report highlighted several recent instances of disorientation, including moments of confusion during a D-Day anniversary ceremony in France and a misstatement about military aid to Ukraine.
In the 23 days leading up to the debate with former President Donald J. Trump, Biden had a grueling schedule, flying across the Atlantic twice for meetings with foreign leaders and traveling from Italy to California for a high-profile fundraiser. This pace was exhausting even for much younger aides, and it appeared to take a toll on Biden.
Concerns among advisers and allies have grown due to these moments of disorientation. For example, on June 10, Biden seemed to freeze during a Juneteenth celebration, and on June 18, his soft-spoken tone and difficulty recalling the name of his homeland security secretary at an immigration event worried some of his allies.
A CBS News/YouGov poll released on Tuesday found that 72% of registered voters believe Biden does not have the "mental" and "cognitive health" to serve as president, an increase of seven points following the debate.
Biden, who Special Counsel Robert Hur described as "an elderly man with a poor memory," suffers from several health issues, including atrial fibrillation, peripheral neuropathy in his feet, and hyperlipidemia, according to his annual physical by physician Kevin O’Connor. These health challenges might explain why he has struggled with balance, having tripped or stumbled multiple times during his presidency.
In an effort to draw less attention to his physical ailments, Biden has implemented a strategy of walking to and from Marine One with multiple aides. He also boards Air Force One using the shorter steps at the rear of the aircraft instead of the taller staircase at the front. Additionally, Biden wears specially crafted sports shoes with his suits to aid his walking, a common adjustment for the elderly.
