    tbh im muslim and henna is a part of my culture but ive never been offended by perrie wearing it. It's clear that she's appreciating it, she hasn't done anything wrong or said anything harmful towards it so I'd rather call it cultural APPRECIATION rather than "appropriating" ... i guess the same goes for the dreads (i don't think leigh anne would stay mute and didn't talk to her if she felt offended) but idk i wanted to point the henna thing out because people are making a big deal of it imo

    To be honest I'm part Mexican, Native American, and random other nationalities. I don't take offense to any of these things. I just don't understand why people feel so good about themselves when they say others are racist for clothing and hairstyles. Perrie has always loved to experience other cultures, she has no intention to be rude. People need to realize they are going crazy over what? A way she had her hair done? A clothing item? So what? Kids wear those as costumes, are children racist for dressing up as their favorite Disney characters? That is just my opinion you're entitled to your own, but seriously.

    I don't really understand why cultural appropriation is even a thing... like why do you get offended if someone else likes a certain part of your culture and imitates it? I would be flattered. Unless someone is actually using my culture in an offensive way I don't see why there is a problem if they want to use something from my culture. All the people that get offended are petty af.

    • @yasminegleek6242
      @yasminegleek6242 7 лет назад +40

      Jazmin Rodriguez "Unless someone is actually using my culture in an offensive way" That is cultural appropriation and that's why it's a thing but I do agree with the fact that nowadays people are so quick to call out someone using/wearing something from another culture for cultural appropriation. I believe cultures are meant to be shared and attacking someone is not the way to do it.

    • @LurenTi
      @LurenTi 7 лет назад +17

      Yasmine Gleek I was about to say the same thing. The reason we have so many cultures (especially those that share similar things) is because cultures use things from other cultures. We all take and borrow from different cultures and those cultures did the same thing. It only becomes an issue (to me) if they're taking something from a culture and saying they make it better or taking credit for it.

  • @makdarling4899
    @makdarling4899 7 лет назад +53

    I just wanna say something about the Native American headdress pictures. I will say that it is disrespectful in my culture to wear a headdress you have not earned. In order to be able to receive one or even wear one, you have to do something in order to gain that respect and the right to own or wear it. For years on end, my culture has been made out to be Halloween costumes and events. And over the years I've come to realize that people are just ignorant and they don't understand the value of some people's culture so it doesn't bother me anymore if I see someone else wearing a piece of a regalia because if it ain't real then it don't matter.
    Let Perrie do and wear what she wants. It's not like she meant anything by it. She didn't mean to be disrespectful to the cultures. So everyone chill the fuck out

    I love the ridiculousness of the idea that Perrie commits cultural appropiation. CUltural appropation as a concept to me doesn't make sence, every culture since ancestral times has adopted some things from one another, and now in the globalized world we can enjoy a lot of things from different cultures arround the world.
    When people were saying that they were appropiating Mexican culture with a Calavera is so appaling. Skulls have always been related to dark magic and spiritual rituals.therefore they used the skull symbolism with a touch of color to make it prettty.
    Henna tatoos are not only Hindu. Henna is a way to decorate the body therefore it's main purpous is to make girls look preety with beautiful designs that did originate in the midle east and central Asia, yet they are perfect for anyone to see since it's use for religion is only one of the later aplications of the original tatoo.
    Dreads are a part of many cultures arround the world and in the same way as henna they are a mainly stylistic choice wheter is in the caribean or other places.
    The only thing that may be argued as appropiation is the native american headpiece since its purpous is to show social status. But those things are barely used by NA people anyways.

      I know this comment is late. It’s just the fact that the black community who originally wore dreadlocks were often teased about it. They got called dirty. It’s just very unfair that when the black community wears it, it makes them dirty and nasty. But if someone who’s isn’t black wears it, it’s trendy and cute. I hope that explains the offense being taken.

    I'm not being funny... but Perrie is a hippy! Its part of her personality to wear hennas and lots of jewells. I wear hennas and jewells that some could say is me being "racist" towards another culture but I don't see it like that at all, I infact like the look of hennas and wear them purely for that reason!!! People should take Perrie using hennas, head dresses, Jewells, dreadlocks and cultural outfits as a compliment because she likes them or else she wouldn't wear them! She likes their culture or else she'd just ignore it all together!!!! As for the sugar skull... it might well be a symbol for mexico's day of the dead but we have them in the UK too! I used to buy a person in my family sugar skull items, I even painted her one!!!! And the last thing I'm going to say is that at the One Love Manchester concert, just take a minute to say "yeah, those outfits may not have been the best outfits out of respect for the victims, but at least they actually went and participated to help Ariana raise money to help those affected." They were just outfits! Get over it! X

      I agree with the one love concert(I was at both concerts and don't give a fuck what they wore tbh), but i don't agree with the culture appropriation comments. If you are using any cultural symbols(skull, headdress, henna, dreadlocks, etc) that aren't apart of your culture, then people of that culture have the right to be offended or not be offended, but you can't say they shouldn't.
      I don't think it's acceptable to use someone's culture as a fashion statement because. Their culture is a part of who they are and they most likely get hate/ receive racism for being themselves and celebrating their own culture.
      I see where you're coming from with the flattery comments but some people may not see it as flattery because they don't know the history of the culture and the symbolisation.
      Just because Perrie is a hippy it doesn't give her the right to appropriate other cultures.
      Don't get me wrong, I LOVE little mix and think they're great role models to everyone but I'm not biased. If they have done/ wore something that can be seemed as offensive I don't stick up for them because I believe in what is right.

      There is a difference between appropriation and appreciation. Appreciating a culture is when one takes into considering that whatever they 'borrow' from a certain culture is important and that they acknowledge that wholly. Appropriation, on the other hand, is when someone literally uses a culture's religious item/clothing style/what have you as a costume without giving credit or anything.
      Example of *appreciation*: donning a headdress after learning of a culture and learning to RESPECT that culture, along with showing said respect and acknowledging what it means to those people.
      Example of *appropriation*: donning a headdress without giving second thought and then saying shit like, "oh, hahaha, i'm a redskin tonight !!!!"
      Do you see the problem? Because I certainly do. Just because you think a certain religious item fits into your 'aesthetic' doesn't mean you can just use it as a decoration.

    Im Native American and pez wearing a headdress doesn’t offend me at all. We actually love to see people celebrating our culture with us. My koko (how native Americans say grandma) always tells me how the Europeans took over our country (no offence to Europeans) and there was nothing left of us. So it’s amazing to see other people looking at us and appreciating our culture. I showed my koko (pronounced koo koo lol) and she says it’s wonderful. I don’t see any problem.

    In this globalize world, why is cultural appropriation a negative thing? I rlly don't understand. Ppl shit on little mix so much but they are one of the very very very few talented one in the western entertainment industry that can put on a magnificent show. Vathnea Toch cultural appropriation has always been a negative thing. Problem is that people claim everything as cultural appropriation. White looking person wears hoop earrings? Cultural appropriation. White person wears corn rows? Cultural appropriation. I can't really list any things for other cultures since my opinion on that shouldn't really matter.

    • @vathneatoch2360

      Taylor Luren I studied Human Geography last year and cultural appropriation was when one person from a culture utilize an aspect of another culture. But it really has no negativity in it, according to the textbook and this is a globalize world. Cultural exchange happens all the time. Maybe it's a bad thing in the western society but I'm living in Asia. And in my country, if some foreigner wear our traditional clothe, nobody would bad mouth them. We'd actually be thankful that they are promoting our culture

    • @LurenTi

      Well, the last time I looked up the definition it said something along the lines of taking and using something from another culture in a negative way. If I am now considered wrong for that, then please excuse my unknowingly false claim about the term.
      I think it's pretty evident that over here we tend to be more sensitive about things. A lot of us want to be upset about everything, which is unfortunate.
      Now, I obviously can't speak for the entire population or even most of the population in Asia, but I would think that there'd be some aspect of culture that people would feel offended by if used for something in an ignorant way. Am I wrong to assume this?

      Cultural exchange and cultural appropriation are two different things and it depends on the culture. An example of cultural exchange: a Mexican person sharing their traditions and/or food with tourists. An example of cultural appropriation: a white person dressing with a sombrero and poncho as a Halloween costume. The first one was something the Mexican people decided to share with an outsider. The latter was something an outsider decided based on stereotypes, using a culture as a way of entertainment. It's wrong.
      Regarding the video and Little Mix, there are certain things that can be considered cultural exchange (like the henna) and other things considered cultural appropriation (the headdress, the dreadlocks) and some things that are just plain disrespectful (groping a statue representing a holy figure). I adore little mix, and I support them as if they were my best friends, but I can't turn a blind eye just because I am a fan. People make mistakes and that's okay, the important thing is to learn from them and apologise. I wouldn't excuse this kind of behaviour if it were my best friend doing it so why would I excuse it just because they are Little Mix? They are talented, but that doesn't give them the right to do whatever they want without some consequences. They just have to learn from it and move on.

      Perrie Faith Jesy is part Native American. They can wear what they want if you have natural hair and wearing a wig, weave or tracks. It's appropriating Caucasian culture. Beyonce did it, Rih be doing it and other celebs be doing it for photoshoots. It's no big deal. People get too but hurt these days. If you atmre gonna say that about LM say it about others as well.

    Since we're talking about "appropriating" cultures, another example is using the song "Bella Ciao" as a TikTok dance or thinking is from La Casa de Papel. I'm Italian so this song for me is really meaningful and at first I was really bothered, but then I realised that after listening to it some people may search for its real meaning and learn something. As long as someone doesn't joke with it I'm fine, but this is just my personal opinion

    The culture appropriation thing isn't like exaggeration when people complain about it because I mean, yes I think it's an honor to have them represent a culture but then a culture shouldn't be taken to look cute or sexy. My culture is mainly Mexican and I loved the Black Magic performance but I'm kinda in the middle since it was used in a performance that was a bit provocative. Once again I loved it but cultures shouldn't be taken too lightly either. I freaking adore them and they're my idols but I'm somewhere in the middle with the whole culture thing.

    • @Lost-mb1gj
      @Lost-mb1gj 7 лет назад +5

      Also, no. You're so wrong, with this designs it's not just a skull. It's clearly a Calavera. It is a very sacred symbol in the Mexican culture and this time they are guilty. I love them but they're guilty. Please don't say offensive stuff like "at first it's just a skull" if you don't know.

  • @kenmercado1054
    @kenmercado1054 7 лет назад +1

    Their stage outfits are stage outfits. It should be meant to add visualization to their performance and not meant to offend someone/something. I think the responsible for the issue on the skull is the production design team/ management team who approves to use it as a design element. Plus the Indian customs and Native American customs that Perrie did, I think the reason she did that is that she fancies those customs and did not meant to be racist. How come most of the people look for the negative things/reasons on how people do such things? It's 2017, I think everyone should have a better judgement and understanding on everything.

I find henna art beautiful and magical and henna artists truly inspire me

    Henna is a beautiful decorative thing. Why must it only be for the people of that religion? She's posting pictures with henna in it, because she loves the way it looks and no wonder it is a beautiful artwork.I feel saying stuff like "Its bad for my religion" Etc. is totally wrong. With the Native American Headress, i doubt she meant it in a disrespectful way, just (i personnally) Like the way it looks, im not trying to be racist, but its a nice head piece. But I do see where people come from.

    Why is it when someone paints their face as a sugar skull at Halloween no one has anything to say but when Little Mix uses a sugar skull to dress up their stage all hell breaks loose? At the end of the day people that paint their faces with sugar skulls they are “dressing their face” doing the exact same thing as Little Mix and people have nothing to say about it, it just shows that when people have nothing nice to say they pic at little things that aren’t problems . Sure I understand the statue picture may be offensive (I’m not sure if it was a religious statue or not) but if it is a religious statue she obviously didn’t mean to be rude or whatever she may not even known it was a religious statue. The henna part was completely stupid it’s not like people are not allowed to get it done. If it was so important in a culture I don’t think it would be so open to anyone getting it done especially in little stores/shops when you’re on your vacation. I got it done in Greece on my holiday. Basically showing that annoying can get a henna and not be offensive. Just leave the Queen Perrie alone “fans”

    Not starting anything here but I'm a massive fan of the girls and especially Perrie. In the dates stated about her being "disrespectful" to other cultures for wearing henna and other things, she was dating zayn who was mixed race and so she celebrated with him and his family as she was, at that point, part of his family. So if anything she is respecting them by taking part in their life. As for everything else I think the girls are just following this generations fashion trends which is normal and like most females out there. Plus they are all stunning so why not show off a little. Other cultures are not costumes or props, and not for others to consume. El Dia De Los Muertos shouldn't be used as a prop. Native American culture isn't a costume. Indian culture isn't a costume. Black culture isn't a costume.
