    Interesting you choose the R6ii over the R8 (you have both, don’t you).
    I’m finding the R8 plus 14-35 is an amazing travel setup, with the 28 in my bag if I want to leave the zoom in the hotel and go super light.
    I have the x100vi on order; it’ll be interesting comparing it to the R8/28.

      If it was for photo only or just for me, it would be the R8 all day! But for my wife who isn’t a videographer, the extra IBIS really helps her for helping me shoot video.

    Great vid, I’m looking at getting a new work camera and watched your R6ll, R5, Lumix S2, Sony A7R5 comparison and downloaded your files. I work in raw and always retouch, colour grade. The Canon files were easily the most pleasing to colour grade and get where I needed to them to be (especially the R6Il). Also going to check that backpack out along with the new Shimoda Urban Explorer. I wish Canon would open their lens strategy … love the look of that little 45mm as a walk around.

    Thanks for sharing, I narrowed it down to my R7 and R8, as well have the 24 and 35 RF primes, a tamron 90mm macro and the 18-150 kit lens, which somehow does an incredible job for my needs.
    Thinking about adding maybe the Fujifilm XS-20 with the 23 f2, but the new x100VI also is tempting.
    Big probs for the Tudor, from one watch guy to another. Keep up the good work and cheers from Germany 👍🏻

Olympus E-PL5 18-44mm and Olympus two primes that could be Panasonic 12mm f2.5, Olympus 17mm f2.8, Olympus 25mm f1.7, Olympus 45mm f1.8. Sometimes my a body and a super zoom Panasonic 18-140mm.

    Another informative video, thanks! R6 Mark II IBIS for video... you made your peace with the Canon wobble 😊?
    On Madeira you can take boat tours from the Funchal Marina to view whales and dolphins. A 35 mm on a 24 Mpix FF camera won't cut it there 🙃. This is R7 + 100-400 mm territory. I did these way back with the 40D + 70-300 and that was juuuust sufficient reach.
    I'm a tourist first and photographer second. So my backpack is filled with stuff my wife decides on: coats, sweaters, hats, fruit, water bottles, sunscreen, tissues, power banks, stuff she buys in shops... no room for photo gear. So we need to keep it minimal. For cities my friend the R8 + 28 mm is my dream combo. I've even used the R8 + RF-S 18-150, that crops the R8 to a bit over 9 Mpix but the zoom makes up for it. When I expect to see wildlife hiking in the woods I'll take the R7 + RF-S 18-150. For cropping. Gives me extra "reach" and hope the damned thing will focus. Those combos, only one at the time, fits in a Case Logic Bryker case, a small case that has a strap that will allow the belly string of my backpack through it and hold it in place just above my hip for fast top access.
    My wife shoots on a Canon 120IS. In a small case that just fits it, she can tuck it in her belly pouch. It is a bit dated and has poor dynamic range, but she likes it small. A Powershot or Fuji 100 is too big for her.
    When I do family / party / meeting: R8 + EF 24-105 f/4 L Mark I. I don't have a dedicated portrait lens yet, thinking of getting the 85 f/2 for that.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  5 месяцев назад

      I still really dislike the wobble! I think for Madeira I'll definitely need my 70-200. I think I may miss the 28mm too, so perhaps i'll squeeze that in the backpack. Thank you so much for watching and for all the advice Philippe!

      @@superstringsbro is right. I stayed with Canon because of my investment in Canon lenses. The shop I went to advised against it and said I should sell my Canon lenses and move to Sony. They were probably right. In the end, I still sold an old EF lens to buy a new RF one. And I bought the R7 with the 18-150 kit, that is two lenses I bought on the new system. The only lens I kept is the EF 24-105 f/4 L Mark I. For that I need an adapter. The R7 was disappointing, so I bought the R8 too. I'm very happy with the R8, but in hindsight I may have fared better if I had decided to switch to Fuji or Sony. If you have no gear at all, you can still choose.
      There are rumors that Canon is opening RF mount to other manufacturers now. So that might still make Canon interesting. Because their bodies are top notch. I like the ergonomics of Canon bodies, I feel they are second to none. And some of their primes are really good value. The 28 f/2.8 is unbeatable. Another RF lens I bought :-).

      @@PhilippeDHooghe I'm thinking of switching maybe this week. I bought my Canon last year thinking I'm sure they'll come out with 1 good lens that I like in a year and nothing. They release only cheap 4.5 lenses. It's my birthday this week and I'm getting a new camera. I'll probably get a sony

    • @PhilippeDHooghe
      @PhilippeDHooghe 5 месяцев назад

      Have a great birthday, have a blast!
      My mistake was to stay with APS-C on Canon, the R7. Now that I am in FF territory with the R8, I'm a lot happier. That too is the mistake the shop people tried to avoid me making. In hindsight, the shop guys really wanted to help me in the right way! I was the smart ass. I did it to myself. Canon Rumors is now talking about an RF-S 15-60 f/2.8 which may be a super 24-105 f/4 equivalent on APS-C but with a wider aperture. And already releasing a Mark II of the R7 barely 2 years after the original one and probably with a faster sensor. So Canon is responding. Of course this is just rumors. Sony is for real.
      My brother in law has the Sony A7R V (60 Mpix FF) with G-lenses. That is *a lot* more expensive than my gear, but his images are on a pro level. His bird photos are breathtaking. As good or maybe better than any Canon gear.
      I'm different. I'm not in search of perfection. I'm in search of high quality at an affordable price point, portability and ergonomics. And I believe there is little competition today for the Canon R8 paired to the lightweight non-L RF glass. The R7 disappointed me. I had the 40D before and this one was a better fit for affordability and good quality. But a bit too heavy and bulky, I ended up not bringing it on any trip. The R7 has amazing IQ, is smaller and lighter, but does not perform well indoors. You need bright light or bright lenses.

    Hi. I have R6 II now planning to buy either 28-70 which I hesitate due to size/weight (rental coming in two weeks, so will try for myself)
    Second option is rf50 1.2 and 24 or 35 prime. Mainly family and holidays abroad. I know it’s a bit overkill but I care about Image quality, dreamy bokeh etc
    What do you recommend ??

  • @iainm1594
    @iainm1594 6 месяцев назад

    How secure is that backpack. Top access or back access is such a concern that someone could get in to the top access while you're walking around. I'd prefer an opening on the back where the straps are as that faces your back when you're carrying it, then no one can access it. Unfortunately there aren't many like that around.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  6 месяцев назад

      It’s actually fairly secure. The fidlock clasp can’t be locked but your average person won’t know how to work it quickly. You can lock the zippers down and there’s also a security divider inside the bag so even if god forbid someone opened the bag whilst you are walking your gear would not show and would not fall out. I have a full review coming out soon that will show in a bit more detail.

    Hi James! Can you tell me what you do to have so little noise in your videos? Do you record in Clog3? Could you record a material showing what your lighting setup looks like when recording? I'm asking because I have a Canon r6mk2 and a Canon r8, and I can't deal with the noise in Clog3. I have a LUT from Gamut, and I set the exposure correctly, but it's not good.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  5 месяцев назад +1

      Hey there! Yep I generally shoot CLOG 3 in Cinema Gamut for the A roll. I definitely plan on breaking down my RUclips setup, but it’s mainly one key light (100d S with the light dome II) and one hair light, an Aputure MC. On the R6II for my A roll I drop the ISO to 400 and then adjust my light to get the bright side of my face to around 60 ire using zebras. This really reduces noise on A roll. Hope that helps (this is only my process for talking head stuff)

      Depends a little on the type of trip, I’m mostly doing short stays in cities where I have never found much use for a telephoto (for my style anyway). Agreed! On our 2 week trip to Madeira I hauled the 100-400 mm with me and I never took it out. We did not go looking for whales... I don't like hauling big stuff around when walking, I usually already have a backpack filled with all kinds of stuff my wife needs and wants. The 28mm was on the R8 almost all of the time. And it did perfectly for landscapes, city and levada walks. Precisely what James says.
      On one sortie, I actually fit the RF-S 18-150 on the R8. I thought I'd need the reach, in bright light the lens aperture is OK and it is plenty sharp for the R8 sensor. It works very well if you don't need to crop. And it is compact enough to fit in my Bryker case. Some shots lacked detail, the R8 crops to 9 Mpix with an APS-C lens. The R7 is much better with it, but I did not bring the R7. In hindsight, I had better left the 100-400 home and brought the R7 instead. That doubles every lens you do bring along.

    I’ve been contemplating the R6 mk ii vs the R5 as I like to shoot travel, sports, wildlife and landscapes and many say the 45mp is what you want but I’ve not really found any info on why or any videos really on the R6 mk ii for landscapes. I’m not trying to print posters so it sure one needs 45mp. Do you believe the 24mp is good enough if even cropping a little ?

    • @PhilippeDHooghe
      @PhilippeDHooghe 6 месяцев назад +1

      For wildlife you want the R5 or the R7. 24 Mpix does not give you enough cropping potential. I tried shooting birds in my garden using the R8 + 100-400 and that was absolutely *no* match for R7 + 100-400. The R7 has a FF pixel density equivalent of over 80 Mpix, that is even better pixel density, but the R5 is a lot faster and has a more reliable AF. Wildlife photographers will never use an R6 or R8. Unless they pair it with outrageously expensive and heavy glass.

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  5 месяцев назад +1

      For minor cropping the R6 II does really well. For wildlife and sports the R5 definitely has quite a bit more wiggle room.

    • @PhilippeDHooghe
      @PhilippeDHooghe 6 месяцев назад

      The R6 can handle high ISO well. I 'd use the 24-105 f/4 L. For party stuff DOF is not good enough at the wide apertures, so f/4 is plenty. I have used the 28 f/2.8 but too much is out of focus. The zoom gives you nice play so you don't need to be intrusive while shooting. I use the EF 24-105 f/4 L Mark I on an R8 (with the adapter) and it gives really good results. I used the lens also on the R7 but that is a bit of horror, it misses AF all the time and the images are very noisy. The R8 is much much better for that.

What made you go for R6II and not for R8?

    • @JamesReader
      @JamesReader  6 месяцев назад +1

      If it was more of a photo focused trip I would be taking the R8 for sure, but when my wife helps me film the extra IBIS in the R6 II helps quite a bit since she isn’t a videographer. There will be certain trips where the R8 will definitely be the better choice.
