I had a similar reaction when Salvadore had a heart attack, but I really liked Penguin's reaction to it. He was angry, disappointed and was telling him I still beat you, it still counts. That saved it for me.
I was listening to the podcast hbo does for the show and they said they tried to set it up that he had problems previously that Sal was on medication for but it was only show once before he got stabbed in his cell.
I liked that Salvadore died of a heart attack. Clearly Oz was losing the fight, but in his delusional mind, he was winning and feels cheated that he could not finish off Sal himself. In his mind, he was "robbed" of it.
Sal dying of a heart attack during a fight is very believable. Nothing wrong with it, happens all the time and they already showed that he has a bad heart.
Colin Farrell said in an interview, couple of weeks ago, I quote: " Oz is not somebody you will feel sympathy for, when the show is over. He´s charismatic & charming but he´s NOT a good guy, not even in the sense of an antihero."
Yeah I love how they are pulling no breaks with how dark and morbid they are portraying this Batman universe. Let's just hope they don't dial it down for the sequel for mass appeal, I frankly think it would benefit from being rated R like the show, and it's proved how successful it can be. In some aspects it's even superior to the movie honestly.
The heart attack is actually referenced in the show. If you look in some prison scenes he had heart medication and since he broke out of prison he never had a chance getting his prescription.
@@SavageLion_yea he was treated by his people and by Sofia’s but yea they definitely couldn’t get his pills cause A. Sofia is still new to the game so she doesn’t have an actual doctor on her side to get pills, and B. Sal is stubborn and thought he would be fine without them which is a common thing with people like them.
I actually liked the heart attack thing, it was foreshadowed in a previous episode when we see Sal taking medication in his prison cell and it gave us that great Penguin moment when he refuses to accept that he wasn't him who defeated Sal, even tough talking to the dead guy. Sad we're not seeing more of Clancy Brown though. My only problem with the episode is the bomb stuff. There is no way Sofia would know everything would be destroyed except for Oz who would be just fine.
I don’t think she went in necessarily knowing or caring that everything would be destroyed. I’m sure she sent that guy there to find a body but of course found oz waddling through the debris
Could you consider a Kevin Conroy tribute? Nov 10th marks 2nd anniversary of his death. He was the best voice of Batman. I made a tribute to him using the classic Batman toys with footage from Burton, Nolan, Arkham and Injustice but I don't got ur reach, and he deserves much bigger tribute.
It's not that black and white. She clearly implanted in him this idea of becoming a tyrannical spineless snake in order to go up the ladder just so she could be given this great and grand life she always thought she deserved by her son, but he clearly showed signs even before that when he killed his own brothers. He likely was born a sociopath and his mother just exacerbated it after the tragedy. She also shows signs of some personality disorder like NPD which always fucks up somebody's child.
The acting is incredible over all but the two scenes that made me drop my jaw with admiration... The Beer scene in the last episode... getting everyone together.. The manipulation and the balls out passion of his delivery... and the dialog after the heart attack... fucking amazing!!! You could not have that without Salvadores stroke... It just shows so much depth... good work as usual,sir... Thank you for your hard work.
I truly love The Batman, I've been obsessed with it ever since it was released, but I got to say that this show has surpassed it in almost every way. I think the next movie would benefit from being rated R because the first one, as dark and gritty as it was, felt tonally a bit restrained because of the pg 13 in order to bring as much mass appeal as possible. This show proves the world Matt Reeves presents should be portrayed with as much morbidness and violence as the movie hints at being.
That's why Breaking Bad was so incredibly compelling narratively. So many shades of grey and character complexities made it as addictive as the blue meth Walt cooked. This show encapsulates that too, incredibly fleshed out characters who are not driven by an idealized delusion of self righteousness, just people trying to survive and thrive in a crime cesspool like Gotham. Great world building, especially considering this is just a side story for an already existing universe with The Batman.
This has really turned out to be a great series. I had wondered why Farrell agreed to play Penguin in the Batman movie seeing as it was such a small role and the prosthetics completely covered his face. Looks like the pitch and script really sold him on the project. Great move on his part.
What i love is this captured exactly what penguin is. I was scared they wouldnt mention it but comic wise hes always been a petty spiteful , little sh## who overreacts to any perceived slight with violence and aggression
It always seems like Sophia is holding herself in check by a fine thread. When she ask Oz did you get the gift I left you and it was a bomb. It was like she got tired of trying not to handle Oz like her father would have. She decided it was time for a blunt instrument. Oz pushed him to that heart attack he was still raw from his wife's death. And Oz was taunting him past his endurance. He was already heartbroken "some poetic writing" for that scene. That's my take away.
I do hope there is a nod to the Batman in the finale, but him not immediately being on site after a bomb goes off is not a plot hole. Sofia had a guy waiting because she was the one setting off the bomb, so Oz is taken out of there almost immediately after it happened. It also happened in the middle of the day. For all we know the bomb is what puts Penguin back on his radar.
After watching how he treated his brothers, I don't believe for one second he's going to let Vic live. Oz is a pure opportunist and narcissist, and probably sent him away just because he knew he can still be useful to him. When/if the Sofia situation blows over, he'll probably kill Vic in a heartbeat for putting his mother in danger.
I love the flashback! Personally I liked the heart attack scene and I think it was meant to show the difference with how sal died and how rex died the same way but with after effects and all that. One died in a more respected manner and the one died in such a worthless and pathetic way with no love and respect around him and that if Oz is ever going to go out like that then he will go with made him great and remembered by others not like sal but rex. On the other hand, the fact that he never told anyone about his responsibility in the death of his brothers could mean that he knew what he did. That would make him a psychopath, right from the start.
Regarding, where is the Batman, It seems to me he's letting his enemies kill each other off. They're doing his work for him by taking each other out. Particularly since he doesn't kill... And like you, I did not see him killing his brothers coming until the very moment he shut that door...
while I enjoy the show, its a little weird to me that we're getting 8 hours of breathing room for Penguin's arc, characterization, and will only be getting about 4-4.5 for Batman (so far). The Penguin's world seems more mature, adult, sophisticated to me than this 1st Batman movie. Something like Justified or the Sopranos. Where is Bats in all this, and how will he deal with this clever criminal mastermind? I feel like he'll just end it all in 15 mins, and thats too simple and easy. Why hasn't he intervened? Whats to intervene on? All they're doing so far to the general populace is selling drugs. I don't see any evidence that Bats would even be aware of whats been going on, other than the Falcones mass death.

This Penguin show is not good. I'm beginning to wonder if there isn't some sort of paid campaign going around, to have everyone say that it is great. Because everyone is saying that. But it clearly isn't (I didn't watch the last episode so can't comment on that. Because it's so boring I wait a couple weeks before bothering). This isn't a Batman show, a Gotham show, a villain from Gotham show. This is a typical dialogue heavy, action almost non-existent gangster show, that has totally stolen the Batman IP in order to trick it's fan base, exactly like Joker Folex Eh Duh did. Except that Joker actually had someone similar looking to the Joker in it. The only relation to Oswald here is a generally roundish shape and waddly walk. There hasn't been a single super hero thing in any of the episodes I've seen, not even a quick mention. Showing Arkham Assylum was the closest they got, and it easily could have been Orange is the New Black, rather than Arkham. You people are all being conned. To any one who thinks this is the greatest thing ever, you deserve the con. As for me, I'll keep watching, because it isn't horrible. It's only horrible as a superhero show, which it isn't. And because of that, it should not exist as one. I wish for its total failure.
Are you seriously complaining that a show titled "The Penguin" isnt about _Batman_? really? Ofcourse it is a mobster show... and a drama... it was never going to be about Batman, nor action. Mature a bit and I am sure you will see the appeal.
Its pretty good show but its not a Penguin show, its Sofia show with Penguin a side character. I dont know whats going on I dont probably think show as harshly as you, but its not 9/10. It has great moments and I want to see more how Colins evolving into "The Penguin" and not some basic gangster with mommy issues. I can see that a woman wrote big part of this. Its most of the time pretty basic writing that jumps around too much on Sofia and also with the stuttering kid. People are way easily pleased. Everything is pretty much "dog shit" or "best thing ever", when some shows like this can be overall just average.

It's amazing in parts but everyone saying it's brilliant I'm just not feeling that quite yet, the stuttering boy gets on my nerves as well
Its pretty good show but its not a Penguin show, its Sofia show with Penguin a side character. I dont know whats going on I dont probably think show as harshly as you, but
its not 9/10. It has great moments and I want to see more how Colins evolving into "The Penguin" and not some basic gangster with mommy issues. I can see that a woman
wrote big part of this. Its most of the time pretty basic writing that jumps around too much on Sofia and also with the stuttering kid. People are way easily pleased. Everything
is pretty much "dog shit" or "best thing ever", when some shows like this can be overall just average.
@@SweetandFullofGrace after the hype I've been disappointed with it, people comparing it to sopranos are off their head. Definitely not breaking bad levels either it's just great in moments for me
