Q : Was your family supportive of the music career path? Tablo : No, they were not. But it didn’t really matter to me. I don’t do what I do, I don’t dream what I dream, for them. I’m very grateful to them. Something that troubles many of us is that our parents made huge sacrifices for us. Right? They clothed us, they fed us, educated us, gave up their own dreams sometimes for us. The problem is that we feel like this dad can only be repaid by accomplishing something, or becoming something that they want. What I realized when I became Haru’s father, like when I became a parent, I fed her, clothed her, sacrificed for her, worked really hard for her, but I don’t expect her to repay this somehow by becoming something, by accomplishing something. All she has to do to repay that is smile! Our parents probably started of the same way. They did many things for us, not expected anything in return except our happiness, and then slowly, they may have forgotten about it, the world and people around them may have made them forget. Make an effort to show how happy you are, if you can’t do what they expect of you. And maybe they will remember that’s all they wanted from you.

As a young Asian female moving back to Asia after studying university in the West, what Tablo said at the end really hit home. I've been struggling a lot lately with the fact that I feel like a failure to my mother because she kind of unwittingly allowed me to study something artsy and weird at university - theatre. Kinda like Tablo, except that I actually managed to do it, lol. And now that I'm back she doesn't seem very happy that I didn't get a First Class Honours but got an Upper Second Class (or 2:1 for those who know the UK system) - which at a fairly well known uni is a pretty good grade. She also doesn't seem happy with my chosen career choice, and isn't really supportive of me going for job interviews, saying stuff like I'm too fat and ugly to get hired. I've kinda been struggling with the feeling that I'm letting her down, even though I KNOW that she's being irrational and is taking out her frustrations on me, I can't help but feel hurt by her words and actions. But what Tablo said really gives me hope, in a way - not that I'll be able to convince her/make her excited about what I want to do (because god knows changing Asian parents who are set in their ways is a Herculean feat in and of itself) - but that maybe one day she'll remember that she doesn't need to measure me against society to be happy for me, if she sees that I am happy. So from here on out I'm going to try to be myself, to love myself for who I am and for not what others think of me, and enjoy the fuck out of my life. If I'm happy and satisfied, maybe she'll come round. If not, I still have my own life ahead of me.

8:59-9:10 literally made me tear up. I’ve been feeling insecure about my life and have been feeling like a let down to my family, and this kind of hit a bit. I’ll have to remember to smile despite these feelings and try to find happiness.
I was here for laughs but the last few mins hit me hard, I started tearing up as you talked about how we feel like we need to repay a debt to our parents because of the sacrifices they made for us. Coincidentally at my counselling session today, I kinda talked about that. How I’ve been dragging myself along and forcing myself to keep going when I can barely hold on, particularly in regards to my mental state and university. I forced myself to keep going because I believed I had to and that I couldn’t stop. I could reduce my courseload but I could not just stop. Reducing it helped for a while but it was a temporary solution that could barely keep me together. I was/am so close to graduation but it got to a point last year where I just broke. I stopped going to most of my classes and I was incapable of doing any of the last assignments so I basically didn’t compete any of the courses I took. I was barely living, just alive because I’m alive. It was truly a dark and isolated time in my life. I decided to get help for the first time after consistently believing I’d be ok eventually, I just need to push through like all the other times. I started crying because hearing you talk about it provided me with some much needed validation(?) in regards to what I’ve been going through.
Hey, ive been there. First year engineering i got into for my parents. used all my time studying but failing anyway for the first time in my life. Spiralled into depression because i hated my program, hated my life, and the future looked bleak as i saw no reason to live a life that wasnt mine. Body responded by giving me really bad acne when ive never had many skin problems and severe period cramps so bad i felt nauseous and couldnt walk. I also tried to keep going, spread it out, take summer courses. But i felt it eating my soul away and finally i broke and dropped out. Now i’m studying fashion photography in london and i fucking LOVE it. Its still tough, i have to pay for my own rent/bills working while in school but when you really want it, i believe the universe tries to help you achieve your goals and brings you opportunities. I might not earn as much money as an engineer but i’m truly happy and that’s really the only thing that matters in the end. took some years to develop an ok relationship with my parents again but eventually they came thru, its what parents do. i hope you find your calling because when you do, your life will just click. Hi Tiffani, I went through the same thing late last year where I broke down completely due to mental stress and would lie in bed struggling to get up for any of my classes. I went to counselling in the midst of it too, and regained some self-confidence and knowledge to creating space for my mental health. I understand that it is tough, but please never ignore the signs your feelings and emotions are telling you. I'm still trying to get better, but if it can help you, feel free to talk to me if you would like ☺
I remember one conversation from the drama "My Ahjussi." - One way to repay your loved ones or the people you're grateful is by being happy yourself... I guess that's the whole point. I have followed Epik High since I was in high school and in some of the toughest times of my life I have turned to your lyrics and music for comfort. Now I have grown myself, graduated from university and am working in a field where my own idealism and reality are beginning and continue to conflict, facing the reality of society and adulthood...while also working a job that puts me in a position to help guide and teach youth and the newer generation as they grow and struggle. As I am trying to navigate this part of my growth and life, your words and advice continue to inspire me. Wow that really hit home. I remember when my dad wanted me to become a doctor. Sure I love biology and all that but during my exam time I realised I wanted to do Design. It was hard cause my dad had told me multiple times that he wanted to become a doctor but he couldn’t and so I should be one for his sake. Plus coming from an Asian country myself too, they can be discouraging of such creative streams. It was a tough decision and I didn’t want to let them down. But I realised I’d never be happy as a doctor and we had the talk, and even though initially he was hesitant, he is supportive now of what I’m doing today and that’s Design (: I just wanna say Thank you for being honest and sharing your thoughts, it means so much to us. Hi Tiffani, I went through the same thing late last year where I broke down completely due to mental stress and would lie in bed struggling to get up for any of my classes. I went to counselling in the midst of it too, and regained some self-confidence and knowledge to creating space for my mental health. I understand that it is tough, but please never ignore the signs your feelings and emotions are telling you. I'm still trying to get better, but if it can help you, feel free to talk to me if you would like ☺

I relate to it so much... no parent is gonna be happy seeing u unhappy doing the things they expect from you... i fell into to society norms expectations and the employability dilemma .. But I do not regret it During that time that seemed right .. i was afraid timid and unsure about my cision I thought that dad was always right and I still do.. but what about my happiness my drive ... i got so used to being stressed out and being dictated that i have a free will .. if i was a person without passions that wouldn t have bothered me .. but it did ... anyways I am glad that i am changing and opening up after a long fight .. i still have much more to doo .. Tablo you are one the wise people I listen to ! Your courage and the way you rose up against a rotten world amazes me ..

I've been a fan of a lot of people, but this man isn't just an artist, he's a teacher. God damn. The realness of the statement.
It's amazing to see how the years have changed you and how you have grown as a person. I have followed Epik High since I was in high school and in some of the toughest times of my life I have turned to your lyrics and music for comfort. Now I have grown myself, graduated from university and am working in a field where my own idealism and reality are beginning and continue to conflict, facing the reality of society and adulthood...while also working a job that puts me in a position to help guide and teach youth and the newer generation as they grow and struggle. As I am trying to navigate this part of my growth and life, your words and advice continue to inspire me. I look forward to see how in another 5 years what wise words you have to share, and to continue to listen to your music. You have and will always be an inspiration to me, as well as your words and lyrics be a comfort in tough times.

Wow that really hit home. I remember when my dad wanted me to become a doctor. Sure I love biology and all that but during my exam time I realised I wanted to do Design. It was hard cause my dad had told me multiple times that he wanted to become a doctor but he couldn’t and so I should be one for his sake. Plus coming from an Asian country myself too, they can be discouraging of such creative streams. It was a tough decision and I didn’t want to let them down. But I realised I’d never be happy as a doctor and we had the talk, and even though initially he was hesitant, he is supportive now of what I’m doing today and that’s Design (:
