Kai Hahto in his youth has lived in New York and been taught by some of the top Professional Jazz Drummers in USA and he played on multiple jazz bands and wedding bands while staying in there. So he is originally a Jazz focused Drummer who tried multiple other Genres and found Metal (like Wintersun and nowadays Symphonic Metal band called Nightwish) as his favourite, but uses those Jazz and other Genres drumming techniques in his playing all the time.
It's not a vacation at all. It's not about how fast you can do singles. With Nightwish he's playing to a backing track the entire time. Any mistake is gonna be noticeable.
@@JHX1 Not before metal, while metal. He got into drums as a child and got his first kit at the age of six. The metal thing really started because of 'Iron Maiden - Killers' album given to him by his grandmother when he was 8 years old. He has always been very versatile in his playing, even as a child he played quite an array of genres. Yes, Big Band, Jazz, and Dixieland are genres that he has played in bands, but he has also played Finnish folk music, pop, you name it, he loves to play drums period.
Listening to Wintersun without the rest of the music is a crime! You were spot on that all the cymbal flourishes were meant to accent the music, Kai really spoke at lenghts how hard it was to construct some of the lines around those tunes.
Really great reaction! I would like to suggest you to react Wintersun - Time live rehearsal at Sonic Pump studio. There you hear whole band. Also Sons of Winter and Stars are played in the same studio. Please and peace 🙏😎✌️
"Doesnt even look like he is really working that hard" trust me, based on those few live recording videos out there he is probably sweating buckets.. its a workout, this song lol. You'd actually have to be a god to not be in pain at some points during it.
Never heard of this band, but I am definitely checking them out now. Loved hearing your thoughts on this. I'm not a drummer but I love learning about the techniques and some of the theory behind this stuff.
Dkdevilkid if you love about techniques, you mist check out the videos of Teeemu Mantysaari (the second guitarist of the band) for Troy Grady. Put Winter Madness solo on YT. In another video he plays arpeggios and other stuff. The interview is mind blowing.
Swing in metal is a really interesting thing. As a guitarist, playing against blasts you're generally counting in 4s or maybe 8s, so a slight move makes a lot of difference. In shit I've played/written I'm slightly behind the beat while playing fast. You get the combination of playing really fucking fast but having a chilling vibe at the same time.
First time I stumble upon your videos, and I love how technical you get! I don't even play drums, but they are usually the first instrument that I pay attention to when listening to something as complex as this :D
I just love these vids/your comments.. When someone who actually knows what there are happening and can explain it to completely noob like me when it comes to playing - i know that they are talented and that it sounds so good, but to hear your comments here and there in the meantime, its just very entertaining to watch. Thanks man! Keep doing what you do if you can, i know ill watch!
MORGAN AGREN from the Mats Morgan Band. Enough said. Seriously one of the best drummers of our time. Hes just on another league. Any style he plays he brings complete originality too.
"He just gotta change his socks" - refers to himself reacting to Tomas Haake playing "Bleed" when it looked like Tomas had changed his socks and he was joking that the socks were probably worn out already half way the song. Hilarious dude!
As you probably know already Kai used to be big Jazz guy before coming to metal genre. He is our Sen-sei. Or As many call he's foot work so accurate that he gotten human metronome adjective to he's name.
So many guys I've seen can't blast like that with their left(right handed drummers) they use the right on snare/and the left on the cymbal but that screws everything up when they go into a fill because the lead hand is wrong. Imposters! THIS is how blasting is done. Also check out Dirk Verbeuren
Reason why Wintersun´s music sounds like " midevil " is that it´s music genre is power metalfolk, metal neoclassical, metalmelodic death metal and black metal. In 1997, Mäenpää served in the Finnish military as part of his national defense duty, during which he contracted tuberculosis. The diagnosis was late, and Mäenpää required surgery to remove part of his lung, hospitalizing him for months. The song "Beautiful Death" would later be inspired by this event. Dispite of that, he can sing pretty good.
Yeah he was in the drumline for a week. Had the cleanest rolls of anyone in the line, even the seniors. Then he left, probably because it wasn't challenging at all and went on to do other cool stuff.
THis is so sad. This song is so epic and the drums are epic in correlation with the music and the other instruments. You should definately listen to the song.
Great react video, great band and great drummer! Couldn't find you reacting to Mgła - Exercises in Futility V -drumcam. Really recommend it if you want to see more metal drumming!
Kai Hahto is a legit professional jazz drummer if I'm not completely wrong. Been following him since rotten sound days, I find it funny how is getting the nightwish pension now :P
Kai haito is also an excellent jazz drummer. Hes one of my favourites. Please react to gavin harrison sound of muzak. Probably.more up your street but the version at modern drummer announced by simon Phillip's. Nothing to not like :)
one metal drummer said something along the lines of making easy things sound more complicated than they are or just speeding them up... meaning that you have one beat going through, like the kicks here and you lay patterns and syncopations on top of them, like cymbals here. another drummer who does this is darkside from mgla check his cymbal game out, took me by surprise: ruclips.net/video/LLOvk0LwuGk/видео.html metal is a very straightforward kind of music usually and almost requires nothing else outside 2/4 or 4/4 or sometimes 3/4 for the triplet feel, although a lot of modern bands start to incorporate more off-feeling signatures (5/4, 7/8 and the likes) or just play in a way that makes them sound like it, even when they are still 4/4. my point being: if it serves the song, nothing has to be overly complicated. the role of drums in metal is that of the time giver, so quite different from jazz where you can break out into a solo or the drummer responds actually to the band being the sort of "red line" throughout the song.
One can program anything. But... to have enough knowledge to program it is entire another matter, which even to a drummer is black magic that they don't fully understand. And so, YOU can't program everything is true, but one can program anything is also true.

First time watching Kai in a Wintersun song. Now I realise why people keep calling his drumwork in Nightwish a lazy vacation in comparision...😀
Yeah I hope that these skills we be used on their upcoming album a bit more
It's not a vacation at all. It's not about how fast you can do singles. With Nightwish he's playing to a backing track the entire time. Any mistake is gonna be noticeable.

Yep, you should check the "live @ sonic pump studios" version.. better sound quality, and all players are worth to see 👌🤘
That’s KAI HAHTO!! The MAN
That groove after 3:25 is basically responsible for me falling in love with this band.
Yep. He's really good.
Kai is such a hero. Actually plays jazz aswell.
I was there back in 2012 and will always remember the feeling...what a night...Time I was released.
He mentioned in an interview that jazz is his favorite style to play.
he comes from jazz
12:10 yes, thank you. I'm glad someone else recognizes the weirdly satisfying cadence of a human blast beat.
