Edgar chose well who to pass the baton on to. The current TD respecting their past whilst forging ahead with innovative improvisations and clear sighted musicianship. Keeping the Dream alive since 1967... long may it continue.

I attended the gig at The Riverside, Newcastle-upon Tyne, 9 March 2022 and this TD 'reversion' if I may use that as a description, were IMHO in total harmony with the legacy of the original TD line up. The set list demonstrated totally the apt name for the tour 'From Virgin to the Quantum Years 2022' and the way the trio utilised a modernistic interpretation of the earlier compositions was brilliant. One of the best gigs I've been to.
I've never known that much about Thorsten, but have always wondered. I like his personal musical style. But, now that I'm able to see him discussing things, I rather like him as an individual. This is someone I'd like to sit down with coffee and discuss electronic music with.
When Edgar began to change things up from the styles that I was used to, being an avid loyal TD follower since the mid 70s, I was disappointed. He changed their direction adding new musicians and instruments that to me did not fit the core foundation of TD. I know that Edgar was not tied to the past and evolution was indeed a key element of the group. But as its only human we like what we like and dont want things to change. Sooo I got off the TD 'real train' at the next stop. This was in the 2000s. It took that long for them to come around back to their roots again. Sadly Edgar left us here. But Thorsten was well guided by him to take over. And now he has brought it back around. The addition of Hoshiko on violin is brilliant because the way she plays and fits into the creations is perfect. Thorsten recognizes how long time fans dislike changes and favor certain periods of TD and is attempting to incorporate elements of each era back into the music. Since I am a 70s fan the space element is important. I also loved the melodic era of the early to mid 80s culminating with the Firestarter soundtrack which is a monumental compositional work that bridges influences from Sorcerer, Force Major and Melrose. Tangerine Dream was always a work in progress and Edgar recognized this. We are very fortunate to have Thorsten at the helm and with what he brings and has created in the last 5-6 years its gonna continue to be a great future for all of us .
Thank for this... Great to get some insight into the production and writing process. Fascinating... Keep it coming Thorsten, loving Raum and the revisiting of old classics 👍
I love the detail regarding how the production and composition is carried out. I love the mix of modern and classic instruments, the virtual and actual instruments. I see that Thorsten has a Mellotron from Streetly Electronics. Presumably that one is the M4000, which if I am right, is the digital version of the instrument, something that Chris Franke mentioned to Streetly Electronics in the late 70s/early 80s that they should make one.
GAZ, as a fella who makes his living doing "sound for tv", I will gladly sell you some wireless units (w/lavs....blk 26 which is only viable in the UK). You two were speaking the English language, but between the bar noise and "distant sound" of the camera "on-board mic"....my studio monitors were not able to clarify some of that dialogue....some of that is could be "the way Europeans to speak to each other", but I really think that a solid close mic/lav situation would have made that (otherwise great) interview, SO much better. Just throwing it out there. Hit me up. Long time listener, first time annoyer.
I wish that when it comes to live performances of their soundtrack work, they would have given some more love to "Thief" and "Firestarter"! How amazing would it have been to hear "Beach Theme" or "Diamond Diary" from "Thief"? Or "Crystal Voice", "Charly The Kid", "Burning Force", or "Flash Final" from "Firestarter"? Aren't there actually any live performances of any of those tracks? I'm curious to know!
I saw them in 2012 in Santa Barbara, and 1980 in Santa Monica. Would love to see them again. I hope they do another U.S. tour in the next few years! Meanwhile, I'm enjoying any live performances that appear on RUclips.
great job Gaz, been a fan of TD since I discovered them in high school - funny how they were already a part of movies I liked (like Risky Business and The Keep) but really got into them later I have almost every album and bootleg up to 1997 or so - lots of material then later I started making covers of their stuff: ruclips.net/video/UOk4eqYu0Yg/видео.html Thorsten is a very talented guy and very down to Earth :-)
I always thought Edgar's amateur guitar deviated from what I liked from Rubycon and I preferred the sequenced synthesizer parts without guitar. Many of my old friends are of the same view.
Late to the party, but yes, many a great TD track was totally ruined with Edgars noodling on electric guitar. At one point I wanted to edit out the guitar parts in cubase but it made more harm.
Sadly for me I needed subtitle so I missed a fair bit of this interview. My favourite tangerine dream albums are from the virgin years. This clip inspired me to pull out my collection of CDs from phaedre to hyperborea. I've been listening to them on rotation for a day and a half
@@AndyKing1963 Okay, but the website says as the very first sentence "Founded in 1967 by Edgar Froese in West-Berlin, Tangerine Dream was formative in the genre of electronic music. After Edgar Froese’s death in 2015, the band consists of Thorsten Quaeschning, Hoshiko Yamane, Paul Frick and Ulrich Schnauss." That is of course very inconsistent. And the first sentence on a website stays in people's memory.
@@siggilindi yep + Ulrich's bio has been removed. Note also that Ulrich hasn't said a word about it. When I spoke to him in Brighton I didn't think it was appropriate to raise the question
Tangerine Dream were low signal to noise. Bois de Bologne was their most unique sound, but even there they repeat a 10s loop for the duration of the song. That's committing liking your own ideas too much, and the ideas were rather bland to begin with.

El hijo de EF perdio interes en TD y está mejor así. Seguro que se pone a improvisar con su gitarrita eléctrica y a destruir todo.

Thorsten (Q) is a very nice guy and yes he is great to talk to
"Raum" is fantastic and I adore "quantum gate" .stunning at times.
It's great to see this interview, thankyou.
I have seen them twice on this UK tour, Bristol and Exeter, and I have to say they are sounding better than ever. It's been incredible.
Best tour in 40 years imho

TD Coming to the Neptune Theaters in Seattle soon! Cannot wait.
Wonderful show. Glad to say I was there
Thorstens comment about each night being a new composition is one of the reasons I love the Tangerine Tree/Leaves Project !
The sound great now that they returned to the sequencer driven polyrhythms and percussion. Sweet👽

Thorsten has a Manikin Electronic Memotron - Paul Frick is using his spare unit
How did I not know they were touring 😪 maybe next time. Thanks for the interview Gaz, pure legends. Who knew electronic music could sound so organic.
Oh man, what a bummer!

Even If you have izotope rx, you can not spare using clip-on mics. Or at least a second phone or something closer to the talent.
The E-RM Midiclock he mentions is a brilliant device and is a must for anyone experiencing latency relative to the Master Source.

Paul Frick replaced him in 2020.

they'll tour anywhere a promoter will take the risk - so far no U.S based promoter will
They recently said that there is a chance of a North and South American tour in 2023
So far only SXSW in Austin, Texas
Wow, next month? That's soon. Let's see... Austin. Hmmm...

Of course tangerine dream use IPad Pro technology! “They know “ they are “much “ more than electronic scribble pads 👽✌️🙏
Nicest bloke going Q and with more talent than any of his critics
OMG! 🤯
Da kommt doch tatsächlich kurz die Sprache auf Ulrich Schnauss! Schade daß sich TD hierzu zu keinem offiziellen Statement durchringen kann...
I'd say listing him as a former member on 'their' website was a clue ;)

With sequencers you only have to press play!
Yes, but only once you have set it all up correctly.
