My Japanese parents always instructed me to discard first when executing a pon-chii to ensure you don't forget to discard, which is the most common mistake by amateur mahjong players resulting in an illegal hand. It makes sense, however, to discard last in a tournament or pro game setting. I enjoyed the video, very informative!

A rule we have when exchanging points, is that points should not be given from hand to hand, but exchanged on the table. It prevents confusion and makes counting easier!
The left vs right hand is interesting, we used to encourage people (including lefties, myself included) to play with their right hand, as the person sitting to the left of the left handed player is at a disadvantage. This is because when the player discards with the left, the person to this player's left can't see the discard since he is blinded by the player's arm. He/she can miss his/her pon, if the person to the right draws the next tile. When discarding with the right, there isn't a problem, because while the person on the right's view is technically covered, it will be his/her turn next anyway. This considered, we have become more accepting with this one, as we want to be as inclusive as possible (while remaining fair), but strongly encourage our players to stick with one hand and to not switch, be it in the same draw or the next one!
Thank you for sharing this video! This should be seen as a benchmark for competitive play!

Also it's traditional in Japan (no longer commonly practiced) to force natural lefties to do everything right handed. So it's not surprising that traditionally, mahjong required players to pick up and discard with the right hand.

great video RMC, i very liked, if you can make some video with the news rules for WRC can be great for all the new players who go this year.

Thanks Cristian! Yeah the updated rule set would be cool to do, but I think WRC should do that 😅 I don’t want to get in trouble if I explained something incorrectly as I’m not an official partner with them haha

@@RiichiMahjongCentral Yeah it’s really well put together, thanks again!
Also if it isn’t too much to suggest new content, I looked around for how to set up sanma for a while online but couldn’t find any demonstrations of all the differences. I was looking for info on little stuff like how many tiles the dead wall should be, etc. Do you think a quick video going over what’s different between the formats in setup and play would be worth the trouble?
Thanks again for making mahjong content, I always love seeing it

I play Sanma in person sometimes, but it’s a rare rule set 😅 I will see if I can find some information online and see if I can put something together👍

So did the plans to make this into a series get abandoned? I don’t see a continuation. 😅

The etiquette one was the first one, and there are others that are strategy/method based. Look for the 5 block theory one and similar thumbnail ones👍 It’s also under the strategy playlist!

Hi Kenji, know there was a lot to cover here, another big etiquette I see that wasn't covered here, discarding where everyone can see the tile at once. I see people who have been playing for years still not doing this.

It’s been a while! I haven’t seen many who do that during our CRMA games, so I forgot about that one! Thanks for pointing it out👍 If there are more, I might have to make a part 2!

Great video! I know it's very commonplace and people usually tell you immediately if you go against it, but it might be worth it to include how to show your hand when you win. For example, using one hand and tilting it over part by part, or using both hands but only showing one group at a time. Using anything other than both hands and flipping it down all at once is a big nono in our group. I don't think there are any ways it can be interpreted as cheating or angle shooting but it is considered very very rude even in casual games. Does CRMA have a stance on it?

Thanks! For this video, we tackled contents that we noticed needed to be addressed. I agree with your point for sure! We generally have people use both hands, and haven’t seen people do it with one hand. As we’re not enforcing anything to non CRMA players, we will be encouraging players to show with both hands when we see it!

When talking about point exchanging manners, 3900 and 1300-2600 are always the examples lol.
    Have to admit I did that 3 x 1000 + 9 x 100 before and yeah... it's not good...

    • @RiichiMahjongCentral
      @RiichiMahjongCentral  Год назад +1

Yes indeed! Using 500 point sticks helps as well 😅 If you don’t have them, I’ve also seen people “rubber band” 5x100 point sticks haha
