I am not surprised Guillermo Del Toro is one of his inspirations , both are very similarly articulate . I remember watching an interview of Guillermo several times just to listen to him explain complex thoughts with amazing effortless fluidity. I was in total awe.
I feel the comment section of every shaunak interview, has atleast 4 guys just in awe of his vocabulary but do sabse pasandida mard ek saath... sunday ban gaya poora!
An incomplete list of directors/artists mentioned in the conversation for newbies like myself (please add/correct): 1. Chris Marker 2. Eric Pauwels 3. Jim Jarmusch 4. Abbas Kiarostami 5. Werner Herzog 6. Ashim Ahluwalia 7. SNS Sastry 8. Sukhdev 9. Victor Kossakovsky 10. Roger Deakins 11. Idris Elba 12. Colin Farrell 13. Guillermo del Toro
Watched the documentary after watching this episode. Loved it! One part I especially appreciate is the contrast between politics in the news and impact it has on the ground. After watching lives of people on the ground from a gaze grounded in reality, how it is covered in TV news looks completely absurd and out of touch. I observed similar contrast in the documentary ‘I for India’ by Sandhya Suri.
Jab maine pehli baar Sans Soleil dekhi thi, mujhe laga ki harry potter, lort, these are not grand, this style that Chris emulated in the Sans Soleil is the interface where documentary and films shake hands.
Mujhe pehli baat to yeh samjh me nahi ati ke ye log hindi kyu nhi bolte yaar, hum india me rehte hai please hindi bolo yaar or mana english bolne se content ki reach badti hai per fir bhi. Hindi ka maza hi kuch alg hai❤

Came for fun discussion but ended up schooled by Shaunak's erudite English. An illuminating talk.

You missed Amit Dutta
Aki Kaurismaki
Andrei Tarkovsky
Béla Tarr
when he is talking about camera stability for conveying a meditative composure of the subject in the frame.
Kya mast mahaul mein record kiya hai podcast. The natural sounds in the background create such a calming environment.
Why can't we get a podcast on Amit Dutta?
The most necessary podcast
Incredible interview. Love hearing Shaunak Sen speak

Very insightful convo. Thanks Shaunak and Anurag
Is it the film Anurag is trying to remember where the filmmaker is reading/sending the letters to her mother is 'News From Home' by Chantal Akerman?
I guess it must be a documentary called 'Letters From A Filmmaker To His Daughter"
Despite Anurag's attempt to recall a different film, Payel Kapadia's 'A Night of Knowing Nothing' sprang to mind.
