And you nailed it. Henk never sang with any distortion before, but learned and did it when he sang Disturbed's version of Sound Of Silence for Floor. Another must watch! :)

Beste Zangers was a relatively obscure Dutch reality show, in which a group of singers from different genres are brought together to take turns performing for each other over an entire season. It's not a competition, but a challenge, for the singers to go outside their comfort zones. This clip is from the 2019 season, which featured Floor Jansen among the cast. Floor ended up singing opera, salsa, country, metal and ballads, sometimes applying her metal touch to them. She was not well known in her home country, but an international audience of Nightwish fans tuned in religiously to watch the show, which in turn gave the show it's highest ratings ever. It also introduced Floor to a whole new audience in the Netherlands. This was the last song of the season, and a thunderstorm came in just as she and Henk took the stage, making it a perfect finale.
If by obscure you mean that also in previous years the show topped the charts in the ratings in the Netherlands?

You have to watch all of Floors Performances from this show .....absolutely Amazing !!! Try "Winner" next from the same show by Floor .
And Henke did that Vocal Fry for Floor , plus you have too watch his version of The Sound of Silence from the show ....better than the Disturbed version IMO .
All Floor's performances on this show were gold; several different languages also.
This is the greatest singer show I have ever seen. Not a competition. Just 7 singers from different genres singing each others songs for one another. Very emotional performances and reactions from the singers themselves. This was the first time Henk ever used fry on his voice. He did it for Floor. Floor was giving respect to Henk. He actually played the role of The Phantom in the Dutch production. Floor saw Henk perform this as a young girl and was a little fangirling over Henk on this show. She requested that Henk would sing this duet with her. He did it with pleasure.
The best part of this show is the look on everyone’s faces 😂😂
Great reaction Anastasia. Henk was actually a childhood hero of Floor, because of his work on the Phantom. He was the Dutch phantom for years, and when Floor found out he was going to be on the show she signed up in a hurry. haha.

Lovely reaction. Henk is a well known musical theater performer in the Netherlands and is famous for his roles in the Phantom and Les Miserables. Floor was huge fan of his from her teenage years when she saw him in he Phantom. A big part of the reason she did the show was to meet her idol and they became good friends during the show. Henk specifically learned to add distortion for her in this song and his cover of Disturbed's Sound of Silence that he sang for Floor. Part of the deal for doing this duet was that he would perform it with her during a Nightwish concert in the Netherlands. Unfortunately the pandemic stopped it but it may still happen in the fall. Instead the went on to do a cover of Dangerous Games from Jekyl and Hyde on her YT channel and he also performed in her solo concert tour (Dangerous Games, Sweet Curse, Phantom of the Opera) as well as her guesting in one of his shows.
Beste Zangers goes as follows: 7 singers get invited to come to a vacation resort. They are to come alone, nou spouses, children, managers, nobody. The group is completely on their own. There is no competition. They choose each other's songs to sing, or songs that were important in each other's lives. Each episode one singer is in the hot seat and tells about his/her career, life, fears, pains, highlights, whatever. In that way a presenter is able to introduce each next song to sing for the singer in the hot seat. The last episodes is duets only. This duet Floor called on Dutch TV magic and one of the highlights in her career. She has adored Henk Poort from childhood and was delighted to participate when she heard he was on the show as well. After the show Henk was also impressed by Floor and the admiration became mutual. They subsequently performed together a few times on Floor's solo tour. Still outstanding is an invitation that Henk will sing at a Nightwish concert when they visit the Netherlands.
Anastasia, you should see all the shows from Beste Zangers (best singers 2019 dutch tv production) from Floor. You meet her here with musical/classic; balad, rock etcetera. So worthwhile because of her incredible versatile power. Sometimes I think she is from another planet. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Floor adores Henk, they've done further performances together. He's been the Phantom in shows in the past.
It’s pretty obvious that Floor and Henk admire each other. Their friendship started during the recording of this show and still continues. So beautiful!
This show and especially this song greatly contributed to opening Floor to the mainstream music fans. She has a few more gems from this show. As you said. She is the chameleon of song 💥💥💥😂

Still jelly that you got to see them live! I am in Calgary, they aren't coming anywhere near here.
They will in a year or two when they do an extended N. American tour, I’ve seen them three times in Edmonton. Don’t give up hope.
Henke has played Phantom for ages but never with the distortion which he learned specifically for this performance.
Henke has since been a prominent feature in Floors solo show as they hit it off so well.
Floor can outsing any rockband in volume... This was the PERFECT pairing for this song.
Andrew Lloyd Weber once said that Henk was his favorite Phantom. Great review, you're awesome Anastasia! Please watch the other Beste Zangers, Floor just kills on all of them!

Last Saturday and Sunday Henk was the guest of honour in the Nightwish concerts in ZIGGO Amsterdam ... There are video's on YT ...
I recommend another amazing duet with Henk and Floor live from Amsterdam called "Sweet Curse".
I think Nightwish know perfectly well that their fans love the cover of "Phantom Of The Opera" and the only reason they don't perform it live anymore is just that the band has already created a lot of their own songs over the years that fans want to hear at concerts, that there is no place for covers in their setlists anymore. As far as I know, the final show with Tarja in 2005, known as "End of an Era", was the last time Nightwish performed any covers (not counting their special acoustic set on the cruise at M/S "Baltic Princess" in 2015).
Nevertheless, there is some chance that Nightwish will finally perform "Phantom Of The Opera" with Henk Port at one of their two shows in Amsterdam in November.
P.S. Beste Zangers (The Best Singers) is a Dutch TV show where during each of the seasons famous Dutch singers of different genres perform each other's songs (or favorite songs of one of the participating singers). This is not a competitive show, no one is "fighting" against each other here - just celebrating everyone's talent and music in general.
'Over the hills and far away' is a cover they still performed in (at least) 2012.

Henk Poort is a Dutch singer born in 1956. Poort's major roles include Erik (the Phantom) in the Dutch version of The Phantom of the Opera and Jean Valjean in the first staging of the Dutch version of Les Misérables in the late 1990s. He also sang as one of the "17 Valjeans" at Les Misérables: The Dream Cast in Concert. His most recent role was Tevye in Anatevka.
Floor teached Henk new tricks 😉, and Henk really liked it !!!
Now you have to do Henk's "sound of silence" . Floor is a huge Henk's fan-girl and for me He is THE grandpa i wish for.

I love seeing people discover Henk for the first time. I am one of many whom discovered both Floor and Henk thanks to Beste Zangers. Ever since I've seen both of them perform a few times live. Henk 5 times by now, Floor twice so far. I can tell you one thing, his distortion voice/ voice with grit has only improved even further. I saw him live last month and he did Sound of Silence (should check that out!) live there, with grit as well, it's only gotten better and better. He's really nailing that distorted voice, while he, before getting to know Floor, never even used his voice like that before. He's a phenomenal singer and one of the sweetest guys I have ever met and gotten to know to some extent personally.
There are so many great performances in Beste Zangers. But please, don't just stick to Floor's season, there are so many gems of other seasons as well. Some recommendations:
Anything done by Floor, Henk Poort or Tim Akkerman, you cant do any wrong with that. Barcelona by Tommie Christiaan and Tania Kross, Clown by O'G3NE, Strong by Emma Heesters sung to Floor. Our Decades in the Sun done by Samantha, even though it's in Dutch, would recommend to try to find subtitles added to them. Some personal favorites include White Roses by Anneke Van Giersbergen, but I'd recommend to find the full episode with subtitles, because that makes the whole song way more emotional. Regarde le Soleil by Millow. Strange Machines by Belle Perez.
The same show is taking place at the moment in German TV (sing meinen song) and Floor is part of it! She had to sing almost every song in German and because the others were more singer-songwriters they were really wordy songs. Unfortunately the clips are not yet released in YT but the songs from the CD are. One of Floors performances was Call you home, another Unikat or Freunde. You can find them on Floors chanel.
All the other commenters said what I was going to say! Oh....I do pop in and listen to you music...you are so talented!!! Don't know how many folks in their mid 60's listen to you...but at 64 years young...I love your energy and style!!!

If you want more of Floor as a person, you might want to consider reacting to the longer versions of the songs she does on this show. This way you'll get the context and emotions a bit better. The (original) artist will explain why they wrote the song, hat it means to them, or why they chose to perform a certain song for someone. Emma Heesters is a youtube who got relatively famous singing covers on YT, and Floor sings Shallow for her... All her songs on this show are basically must-watch material if you're a Floor fan. Tim Akkerman does a nice rendition of Nemo for Floor. But she floors (pun intended) him with Winner.... Do yourself, and us, a favor and react to her Beste Zangers.... (and Henk's rendition of sound of silence :)

many call 'The Phantom' an opera....actually it's an Andrew L. Webber stage musical.....doesn't matter, the story & music are beautiful....btw, for vocalist nerds, Floor's last note is a 'D6' -- what range and sustain ! and they're havin' so much FUN !
I absolutely love this rendition, Floor and her long time hero Henk. But I also loved the Tarja and Marko version. Quite rare for Nightwish to cover a non Nightwish song, but done with a ‘Nightwish take’. You might like to react to th Nightwish version sometime.

Phantom of the Opera was the song Nightwish did with Tarja on the evening before they fired her. So I think it is a painfull for them to do this song with Floor.. (and also I think they don't want to start a "war" of comparissons...)
There are a number of great songs (which all very different!) with Floor from that show, such as
- Mama (gritty, bluesy, powerfull and emotional)
- Que se Siente (Latin)
- Vielja Lied (Classical song)
- Shallow (beautifull and emotional)
- etc.
