  • France is known around the world for its culture. Some go so far as to say it’s exceptional! Literature, cinema, music and art are seen as precious things that must be protected and promoted. The state therefore invests a lot of money in the country’s cultural output. This costly policy - known as the "cultural exception" - has a good return on investment in terms of economic growth, but isn't without controversy. Genie Godula and Florence Villeminot take a closer look in this episode of French Connections Plus.

As an American, this is one reason why I have such a high respect for France.

I'm all for protecting the French culture, yet France also needs to protect its own "indigenous" cultures: I'm talking about Basque, Breton, Catalan, which receive no support whatsoever from the state. Quite the opposite..
So France, please don't follow a double standard of wanting to be protected and yet at the same time erasing your own native minority culture.

You can't protect subcultures without first insisting on a national legislation to protect at first the "Paris culture". I don't consider this a double standard but a first step. And I do see local communes (not sure if there's any involvement from the national ministries) that advocate for the inclusion of local cultural activities and languages. Seeing Flemish in Nord, boards in Alsacian, and there are local musical institutes that are endorsed by the ministry of culture promoting local folk and tradional music. Similarly for literature, which I know many people associated to the Ministry working even with universities. I've heard (though not seen myself) of institutions promoting the Breton language though sadly being unpopular among the people (basically considered a waste of time compared to learning English by a lot of youth) So I can't say the government is doing the opposite, at least not all over France. You can check out the site of the ministry that have links to many initiatives (DRACs and DACs), though you'll notice a decent number of them are defunct.

@@abalaster9085 I see where you are coming from but I have to disagree, there are not just minority cultures native to France within it but also large amounts of minority groups. "Paris culture" is really dangerous to the minority cultures of the francophone world I would say more dangerous than american influence is in France. This is not a first step towards protecting these cultures it is further establishing the respectable Parisian culture over these minority cultures. Native french communities are likely to have more backing from the government but France is incredibly diverse and those minorities will not be protected and will probably be threatened to become "more french".
Not to mention french history, An empire which on the global scale has threatened far many other cultures than it has been the victim of completely destroying many. That is a double standard, French social nationalism is so prevalent within french culture is it praised. Be it china who proposed this type of initiative it would be scrutinised heavily. French culture is not superior to any other culture, while i agree global influence could dilute all cultures slightly french culture is by no means at risk. I cant say the same for large parts of west Africa and those minority communities within France.
I might be biased idk, but something about this patriotism for french culture rub me the wrong way completely. It almost tries to play the victim a lot with protecting itself, while we forget about the horror of the empire. It makes me really uncomfortable in my french classes and initiatives that protect France like this receive such praise I think its really harmful.

@@lordcoe5577 I could see where you were coming from but I don't see many people in France who "love" the country per se. To be frank I see more people who loath everything about it and would rather see everything Americanised, especially in, wait for it, Paris. And it really is refreshing to see someone standing up for "local" culture, philosophy and literature. Again, I get it but the everyperson in France isn't a patriot. The self-loathing is on par with the Brits, and I really would insist that French narcissism, if not always a myth, is one now.

@@abalaster9085 pehaps, I only got to live in corsica for 3 months and they were adamant about not being french so I dont exactly have any first hand experience. It might be specifically because I do a french language course I feel over exposed to that french narcissism that you speak of, due to teachers wanting to promote France (it is the course after all). But I also do spanish and italian and I dont notice this type of cultural pride on those courses.
Despite this I just can't beleive the french type of pride is gone. It has been at the centre of frances social values since before modern frances inception, the 100 years wars, colonialism, the revolution, and both world wars have entretch this attitude so deeply I see it everywhere. It some of the core things that make france france. In the same way america is all about freedom, this attitude towards itself is something that I see as so core to french identity i cannot simply cease to be, perhaps change and develop in someway.
Again I might be baised since I dont particularly enjoy the course (this attitude is one of the reasons why) and im some miserable brit. idk why but i cant get over this weird type of pride, everytime i comes up in class i tense up and it really agravates me. Trying to be less of a dick towards france but it something that will never stop bugging me about the culture.

@@lordcoe5577 well, it's not like that ground zero. People here often feel ashamed of speaking English without an RP accent, are really ashamed of their accent, I'm actually better at written French than most people I know here, McDonald's and kebabs are literally preferred to French cuisine. I really could go on. This narcissism, that even I expected, is hard to find. What you do have is the common notion that Parisians look down on the rest of France, as peasants, basically, disconnected from international society.
So the only snobbishness I see is against what's traditionally French.
I get what you feel, but French narcissism is harder to find than British (English) narcissism. They're almost depressingly and annoyingly self-loathing here.
I feel like people measure their coolness by how unfrench they are. I've lived here a while and it's actually getting on my nerves. I'm not even particularly fond of French culture but it's really grotesque when it comes to this point. Though something is to be said about British Francophiles, who tend to be among the most narcissistic bunch on this planet. Like the self-fart smelling pomo philosophers? Guess what, they're taken more seriously in English speaking countries than France itself.
