- Changing Lower Unit Fluid on Yamaha F350 ends in DISASTER!!!
In this video I am changing out the lower unit fluid on a pair of Yamaha F350 outboards. The first one is perfect with a step by step how to on what tools will be needed, how much fluid is required, and the overall basic technique on how to actually perform the oil change. When going to the 2nd engine, it all went well until the oil came out. Check out the video and let me know if you have ever had this happen to you and what you did.

Fingers crossed! I am getting it all resealed, there is a total of 5 seals and then they pressure check it. When I pulled the lower unit the oil was coming out from the top seal where gear selector is located. Right now these lower units are in short supply as well as the parts for it. All because of covid. UGH

Couple pieces of advice, 1) replace the gaskets on the drain bolt and fill level bolt every time. 2) you can pressurize the lower via fill hole with just a little bit and spray soapy water on seals to see if they are your problem. 90’% of time that is your issue, but your driveshaft seal under waterpump can also cause water intrusion. I do my own service just like you and have learned these tricks the hard way. P.S. I installed the drain plug with bad gasket and it allowed water intrusion. Change the lower unit oil a couple times more recently after you have the water intrusion and you will save that lower unit”s life.
Thx for the info. This was years ago now. As you prob know the 350s lowers are troublesome. I now check them every other trip
I did not see where you changed the gasket on the filler screws. I was told to replace Thea every time the screws are removed. COULDBE source of water into lower unit.

Yeah you are 💯 correct! They changed all seals and gaskets during the service when I brought it in. It was like $400 I think.
Might check seal under water pump. I assume they have one around the drive shaft coming out of the lower unit.

I believe you're slightly overfilling your lower units. Fill it, let it settle, and cap it when it is no longer flowing out of the vent hole. The oil is supposed to be level with the fill hole not overflowing and your lower unit needs to be level and parallel to the ground. Too much lower unit oil can cause the shift shaft seals to fail.
Yeah, it might look that way, but I always lose a little when I pull the filler out of the bottom and put in the drain screw, so I think its probably ok. But good observation for sure. Thanks for heads up, and I will double check next time.
I just had the same thing happen. I'm buying a used one, fingers crossed. I'll look for you Part II though and see if it is worth doing the seals myself. Mostly because you said "This is the only thing it can be."

I have same Yamaha F350 engine, just changed my lower unit fluid have been doing it for yrs very easy to do. This season my fluid came out milky so i know i have to get the seals done.
In your case, makes no sense how such clean/clear water draining from drain hole,i would expect some milkiness draining, even a light milky color. Unless you never had fluid in it at all, if thats the case the water only in the unit would have destroyed your lower unit.
I actually have had good luck with it so far. The tech said it was the top seal which pretty much ejects the oil right out.... We flushed it out and resealed all of the seals as well as pressure tested it and its been going ever since. I do change it now every 100 hours to be safe.

Same thing happened to my lower unit. I had to replace my lower unit with a new one.
Mine was going strong until this past weekend. Its in the shop, I heard a bearing when I spun the prop. I also have a spare thank God!

Ah man, I think my outboard has gotten water in there too. Will that ruin the motor? I'm pretty sure its from the water pump gasket being almost all the way dissolved but I don't know that much about outboards. I replaced the impeller and have a gasket on order already. I am worried though.
Its the lower unit and if it leak its gone. Address it right away otherwise you will roast your lower unit!
@@JackedUpFishing I don’t actually know yet if it’s in the oil. I replaced my impeller and gaskets and there was some water in the area not much like a couple drops. I haven’t drained the oil yet too see. Can water get into the oil from the impeller area? Thanks

Yeah I posted a 2nd video. We ended up taking it to local service Dept and they put all new seals in it, flushed it and pressure tested it. Been good ever since.

Bill. I have a white gasket where my propeller meets that housing unit.. it’s loose an at 1 point had my dads line caught in there.. what should I or what do I need to do?.
There shouldn’t be any gasket there between housing and propeller. There should only be a metal thrust washer. What engine do you have make model year

Everytime I had a leak in an outboard gearcase, the oil came out milky (water emulsified in the oil). Ant idea why your oil did not mix with the water?
Yeah because it came out of my shift shaft seal instead of just letting water in it pushed all the oil out if the top. I was very lucky to catch this. I am still going this same gear case to this day!

The most common source for water intrusion within the lower units is the drain screw gaskets. When you changed the starboard LU gear oil, it looks like you reused the drain screw gasket. They are supposed to be replaced every time the LU gear oil is changed. I had a pair of F225’s that we accidentally reused the drain screw gaskets on (had a friend helping me; never again) and he forgot to put the new ones on. Within a couple months, both LU’s were getting stuck in gear & upon inspection, found what you had in the video.
It was the prop I was using. Mercury Rev4 props take water away from the cooling tube. I have reused washers with no problem. If they are older than a year I replace. I change or check my fluid every 4th trip
Why was your used lube so dark?
I am not sure. Maybe the mechanic put different brand in I am guessing. Its the Yamaha brand now for sure. Good eye. Merry Christmas!

Hey I have a friend who also has a seahunter 32 twin yamaha 350, 4 blade props, maximum speed is 42 mph wot and best performance is 1 mpg. I was wondering what are your numbers, and if they're any better what props are you using
What year is the boat and whatnot?
My 37 Seahunter gets 1.0 no matter what speed I run. Except wide open obviously. But every other rpm range ours a solid 1.0-1.1. I am getting ready to do the Nizpro flash on mine to make them 425hp. I will do a video on it as well.

@@yordangonzalez5239 you know how many hours because mine is a 2014 32 seahunter with 2014 300 Yamahas and fully loaded at like 12500 pounds we run 53 getting 1.0-1.1
@@brayden4333 motors have less than 700 hours, he put 4 blade props on them because he damaged the one of the three blade props he had before in shallow water. He probably put the wrong pitch prop on that boat. 42 wot with twin 350's is terrible numbers for that boat
Can’t you flush it with diesel and that will get all the old oil and water out ?
Yeah probably but honestly I just change it every 3-4 trips now to keep an eye on it. So it’s good to go

Why not fill from the top??
Try it and you will see. By coming from bottom it let’s all air escape and gives you correct level.
