    Is it legal to transport a captured swarm in New York state? The laws and regulations that I read for New York state make it sound like I need either a permit to transport them, or a certificate showing the bees are free of parasites, disease, etc. Can you provide any information on such a subject?

    I'm going to take Beekeeping classes this summer. Also from the question below but its slightly different.
    Is it ok to keep African hybrid's? And if you go out into the wild and find a Bee swarm but later on find out they are Africanized what do you do with them since they are so aggressive?

      Like the other person said, it depends on where you live. Some states do not allow. So check your state’s regulations.

    Hi Rebekah, I feel bad. I just got home from a long motorcycle ride today, and my neighbor showed me a swarm of bees in his backyard tree just six feet off the ground. I didn't have anything to put them in to capture them. I already have a full hive. In fact I believe that it's prolly a split from my colony. Because when I checked on them, they were not as active as usual and they didn't seem so heavy in numbers. It could be, maybe not. I called a bee catcher to come and get them but they didn't answer. I left a message. Anyhow, I feel bad because I'm a bee keeper and I didn't have anything to catch them in. No box, no sheet. I do have the bee suit and other tools, just not a home. Not even a box, jeez! A box!! I hope that they're still there tomorrow. Long story short, how long will bees stay in a cluster when they swarm?

    • @CatswildlifefarmBigVHoneyBee
      @CatswildlifefarmBigVHoneyBee Год назад

      next time that happens and you dont have a hive get a cardboard box and poke air holes in it you can even cut out a section and duct tape a screen ( just make sure you dont leave any exposed tape where the bees can come in contact . Always peep a spray bottle with sugar water and lemongrass oil in it. Spray the swarm spray the inside of the box knock the bees into the box, close the box top I would secure it with some screen and a tie. That will buy you enough time to get to the bee supply to get what you need. I would always advise having a swarm kit on hand during swarm months.

    In which season does the bee build new queen

    • @denverjnpierre7228
      @denverjnpierre7228 4 года назад

      I can answer that question for you. Bees can build a new queen at any time. Place the right components in the hive and the bees will start to build.themselves a new queen. They will know they are queenless and build their own queen.

    About how far out from the hive does a swarm go? I've wondered that and not seen that information in anything I've read. I've seen the distance bees go seeking nectar... but never the distance they go from their original hive seeking another place to live.

      ***** Thank you for answering, that's very interesting information. I had no idea! Fascinating! I love to learn new things every day. And when it's about things I love, that's even better.

      Sansa Stark It depends on the location of what the scout bees found. Each scout bee ( there are probably several) dances the location of their particular hive choice on the surface of the cluster. Gradually a consensus is reached and the swarm goes to the chosen location.

      @SansaStarkofWinterfell 7 лет назад

      Thank you Cathy Montgomery, I'll keep that in mind. Love to learn things about bees. I'm hoping to get a hive when I can afford it.

      A swarm can have a successionary and young queen in it and they fly better than an old queen. Often a swarm that is on the ground has an old queen who has left the hive while the swarm in the top of a tree has a young one. Any swarm is a good one because they can take an egg less than two days old and requeen themselves. LOL, that often involves a process called "balling the queen". A group of bees surround the queen and starve her to death- no joke.
      A hive like the Kenyan style, looks like a hog trough, is cheap and easy to build~ $20.00. Langstroth hives are much more expensive. All the other amenities can require some investment. Get a veil and hive and hive tool for starters. You can improvise from there and when you catch a swarm you are in business.
      BTW, swarms are free for the catching while a package and queen ~ $100.00
      Contact your local farm service agency, local sherriff, and emergency management agency and ask to be put on their list to catch a swarm. People that are not interested in bees are panicky to get rid of a swarm. A swarm less than 7 days old is a marvel. They practically never sting unless you squash a bunch and are easy to hive. (Hint: they love a cardboard box for transport.) After seven days they get grouchy. Good luck!

    • @adriennesmith.artist
      @adriennesmith.artist 3 года назад +1

      No, it needs to be waterproof. Cardboard will collapse in rain. Some people have cardboard nucleus hives but they are waxed. You wouldn’t be able to keep bees in long term.

    How do you know it's a swarm of gentle bees and not Africanized bees?

    • @joerowland607
      @joerowland607 7 лет назад +6

      Julie Silversmyth that generally takes genetic testing to be sure. I am in Florida and african bees are possible and I know several keepers who if a hive gets to aggressive as opposed to paying for testing they kill the hive, using gas and harvest the honey. If african traits frighten you order bees in a nuk with Italian or Russian traits, but in Florida an African drone can bring in aggressive traits. I dont know any people here who dont suit up when dealing with a wild hive and I know people who keep hives with african traits just have to handle them properly.

      Julie Silversmyth You will know in about a minute when you get attacked by all of them

    • @JulieHiltbrunner
      @JulieHiltbrunner 7 лет назад +3

      Thank you so much for your response. I imagine we will always wear suits near the hive. But out in the gardens we won't be wearing them.

    • @joerowland607
      @joerowland607 7 лет назад +1

      Julie Silversmyth Foraging bees are generally not aggressive at all even if they have african traits. Aggression comes from protecting the queen. Even a docile hive (italian, russian) can have a nasty attitude if you disturb the hive at the wrong time, such as when it is too cold or when it is stormy out, bothering them at that time can be really bad news. On you tube watch 628 dirtrooster. He is really knowledgeable and he is a nice guy. If you send him a question he really strives to answer.

      Swarms are great but that is definitely a concern if you’re in the more southern states of USA. They often have rules that require you to requeen the colony if you captured the swarm. Not the worst thing.
