What I will say about the flow hive, is that if you have the money for one, and you aren't doing this for profit, then these are awesome. That being said, they take up a lot more space than a normal frame, and they are EXPENSIVE. What this ends up meaning is that your going to get less honey per harvest than with a standard langstroth hive with normal boxes. We usually harvest 3-4 times a year. Our first harvest is of the honey that we left them for winter(I always leave a full super for my girls), and we treat them for varroa at the same time. Next harvest is end of spring to mid summer, depending on how the supers look. Final harvest is mid to late October when we set the hive up for their winter. Anything over that one super gets harvested. Personally I love long hives, but these really are clever. I have a single hive set up with them, but it does produce less, and once the box starts to come apart I will probably get rid of it because you have to make concessions for the convenience.
@@rainnmoon114 a super is what you keep the honey in. You keep the queen and the brood chambers lower in the hive, and then above you have the honey supers. @@KiLLJoYRUclips Well, they are bees, they do not have the most biggest and evolved brains out there and to them it just looks like they have more space for honey. Even if we did not take their honey, bees have a bad habit of making so much of it, that they themselves can't consume all, so the honey that is left will eventually crystallize and become unusable, so the bees just go "Oh well, time to make more storage space!" without even cleaning the previous mess, meaning that their hives will just keep growing and the honey they do not consume will just keep crystallizing, meaning needing to make more space etc etc... Bees will just keep doing what they were born to do, they do not have any higher thoughts about it like us humans, so they don't really care that they keep doing work for nothing, doing said work is their lives entire purpose after all. It could be worse for the bees, since there are plenty of other creatures out there that would simply destroy their entire nest to have their honey, us humans are more gentle about it, taking it without making them lose their home and then having to use time and effort to rebuild it, while also of course making sure they do have enough for themselves to consume, both parties benefit from this arrangement. Humans get some honey and the bees have a safe home to be in and making sure that the nest itself is healthy for their continued existence.

@@FlowHive Hi! Does it ever happen that the bee is bone idle and is seldom in the mood to make any honey? Or it is a strong instict in all that it is their task as long as they live?
a piece of garbage Hi can I have an honest answer on if using wax from honey comb is in anyway stealing or misbehaving with bees. I am a vegan guy who does not want to hurt another living being. And want to know that once honey is taken out in professional or natural way, "is wax reusable by bees" or it's just an broken jar which used to be piggy bank someday and now all honey is gone, so the broken jar is useless for bees?
Dax Brook OK but unlike this process, most of the time comb get smashed while taking out honey right? Then is it really useful to bees! Even I am not sure for this process what does it really do to comb when you squeeze that nobe.!
@@ddhaval010 I know this reply is late but maybe someone will read it. Beekeepers try to save as much wax as possible to give back to their bees. When harvesting the honey most beekeepers use a special tool to only scratch the top layer off the comb (also known as uncapping). For beginning beekeepers: Try to keep the honeycomb as cool as possible (don't leave it in the sun, car etc.), so that you don't destroy any of the comb when the wax is warm and you just want to scratch the caps off some wax will come off too
They don't just produce more than they need, it's for a reason. They are not sure how much they need so they gather lots. The next year starts and they have access to extra they can now split the hive and spread out and keep the colony growing. It's like how we as humans stock pile stuff to use when we start to run out. I'm actually curious if this guy needs to get queens constantly because the hive leaves. Taking their honey all the time, they aren't stupid bugs they are really intelligent and they do talk to each other.

Salene Brom It seems that way but the more I review it the more pitfalls I see with it. If you are not in a rush for the honey and are willing to leave it long past when you THINK it is ready then this would be good. But from what I have researched it, you can not tell when they come is fully filled and properly aged without still taking it out. It's a very expensive learning hive if leaving the bees alone is more important than getting the honey.
+Tom Leeds In that case don't buy the complete hive. Get a cheaper learning hive locally or build one yourselves. Some wood, a saw, some screws and a screwdrive is probably al you need. And if inexperienced just some perseverance in adjusting and fixing your build. An existing hive is easy to adjust to fit some flowframes. Then you only have to order 3 or 4 flowframes and put it in your hive. And even that you could decide on later when you've succeeded with your first trials :).
+jo han wtf? Why would anyone waste their time building your own hives when you can buy boxes for $25, bottom board $18, lids $15 flat packed, frames are $2 wired, excluder $10. Comb you buy per sheet... Making hives yourself is not easy But you’re right the flow frames can fit into modified standard boxes.
This would be so awesome to do. I’m going to keep researching this. Really I wanted to learn about medicinal honey infusions but this video helps me even more. I could become a bee keeper work for the bees and they’ll pay me in honey. Thanks

@@hyena1268 why do they replace it? Don’t they realise they’re doing work for nothing?
@@KiLLJoYRUclips why don't you go ahead and create a union for bees?

Fahmi Meiwardhani it's not worth paying 500$ more
Morrison64 It is if you plan on keeping a hive for more than a year. Makes collecting honey so much easier and less messy too.
True
That's well worth the cost instead of getting an extraction machine and having to manually uncap the combs and harvesting the honey.
Fahmi Meiwardhani search the videos of experienced bee keepers destroying the design of this overpriced trash
Hey, I'm curious as to how and when the bees notice that the combs need refilling without the wax having been removed? :)
Hi, we have found the bees will sense the cells are empty and begin the uncapping, re-waxing and refilling process straight away. Usually they finish uncapping all the cells in a day or two. A busy hive will uncap all the cells in a day or two. If the hive is not so busy it may take longer. We have seen a not so busy hive take a week to finish uncapping the cells on the outside frames. After they have uncapped the cells they will begin the process of refilling the cells with honey. Please let me know if you have any other questions - Leah
@@FlowHive Hi! Does it ever happen that the bee is bone idle and is seldom in the mood to make any honey? Or it is a strong instict in all that it is their task as long as they live?
a piece of garbage
Hi can I have an honest answer on if using wax from honey comb is in anyway stealing or misbehaving with bees.
I am a vegan guy who does not want to hurt another living being.
And want to know that once honey is taken out in professional or natural way, "is wax reusable by bees" or it's just an broken jar which used to be piggy bank someday and now all honey is gone, so the broken jar is useless for bees?
Dax Brook
OK but unlike this process, most of the time comb get smashed while taking out honey right?
Then is it really useful to bees!
Even I am not sure for this process what does it really do to comb when you squeeze that nobe.!
@@ddhaval010 I know this reply is late but maybe someone will read it.
Beekeepers try to save as much wax as possible to give back to their bees. When harvesting the honey most beekeepers use a special tool to only scratch the top layer off the comb (also known as uncapping). For beginning beekeepers: Try to keep the honeycomb as cool as possible (don't leave it in the sun, car etc.), so that you don't destroy any of the comb when the wax is warm and you just want to scratch the caps off some wax will come off too
"Damn it that giant is stealing our honey again!"
Imagine in a day they check under their caps, and all the honey is gone!
They produce more than they need so it's a good thing and they'll just make more
They don't just produce more than they need, it's for a reason.

I just found this extraordinarily amazing I never saw anything like this before and I am amazed I used to be a beekeeper years ago and only in a video just before watching yours did someone mention about the the honey flow system it's amazing thank you very much God bless you
I've wanted to keep bees for years, this seems ideal. My interest is more in the bees than the honey but I do love honey!
Seems faaaaar less stressful for the bees
And even that you could decide on later when you've succeeded with your first trials :).
jo han Thanks for the advise.
+jo han wtf? Why would anyone waste their time building your own hives when you can buy boxes for $25, bottom board $18, lids $15 flat packed, frames are $2 wired, excluder $10. Comb you buy per sheet... Making hives yourself is not easy
But you’re right the flow frames can fit into modified standard boxes.
I was impressed on how easy it is to get free honey i think i will try this i the spring thank you for making this video. God bless all
I'm so glad that I'm becoming less afraid of bees. They're so amazing

"The bees are quick to notice when the honeycomb cells are empty - we guess empty cells must feel quite different underfoot if you are a bee. You can watch them work on the end cells as soon as you reset the Flow Frame to the closed position.
We have found the bees will sense the cells are empty and straight away begin uncapping, repairing the wax in the cells, and refilling. Usually they finish uncapping all the cells in a day or two. If the hive is not so busy it may take longer."
^ Found this in another comment, figured it'd help to share.
Whoa, cool. Didn't know there were hives set up like this. That was super satisfying :)
I love how you found a way to basically make vegan honey by making a hive that both produces a high amount of honey and does not stress out or bother the bees! (Also I know literally nothing about beekeeping but it is now officially my goal to save up and get a flow hive at some point in my life)
I thought vegans weren’t supposed to eat any products made by animals?
@@AgentClaytonWebb usually they do that to object to the conditions the animals are kept in and the stress and horror of factory farming. A process that doesn’t harm, stress or kill the bees while extracting a product for human consumption may certainly change a vegans mind if they can source their honey this way
