“People all around me all the time would say, ‘Oh, you’re such an amazing singer,’ and that became my identity in a lot of ways…I’m the singer.”
When singer-songwriter Tori Kelly was signed to a record label at the age of 12, it felt like she was being given the world. Instead what followed was series of disappointments, broken promises, and a laundry list of things she was told she needed to change about her look or her personality in order to be a success.
“I was this singer…if I failed, then people would be disappointed.”
Tori found herself knocking on closed door after closed door, feeling increasingly discouraged. But, when she stepped away from noise and judgment of the industry, and took some time by herself in quiet, she found something she didn’t expect: her voice.
“Those moments in my bedroom, when it was just me and my notebook, that’s when I really got into songwriting more…It was this slow, building process that wasn’t forced. There was no ‘you’ve gotta try this, and you’ve gotta be this, and you’ve gotta have this different personality. I didn’t have to change myself, I could just be myself. ”
Today, Tori has recorded two full length albums, performed sold out tours and tv appearances, and been nominated for a Grammy. She sat down with I Am Second to share her story and a few things she wishes she could tell the 12 year old girl she used to be.

I can relate so well. I have heard the 'you're too shy', 'you're too quiet' all my life. In todays society it seems like you have to be bubbly or extroverted to 'make it'. We introverts have a lot more within us than some people might think:)

Very well put. :) I'm constantly told that I'm too shy or reserved like it's a bad thing. And sometimes I get down on myself like maybe there's something wrong with me but there's not. God made me this way & I think that's pretty cool.

This is why I love Tori so much. She doesn’t try to be anybody but herself. It was heart wrenching to watch her talk to her younger self because you could feel the pain in her voice but she came through on the other side stronger than ever. She inspires me so much and I know that God has a plan for me. I want to be a singer and inspire others like Tori and spread the word of Jesus.

I think these videos are important to show young people that even famous people that seem to have it all struggle with doubt, fear, loneliness, etc. Unfortunately, the younger generations are not believing in God and thinking religion is “outdated”.
CrayCrayIRL it's not just believing in religion its what of you think about God. Placing God in your heart is the main way to find happiness. Doing all the stuff that's out of the norm of what the entertainment business today does not necessarily provides everyone happiness. There even people who can stand living in L.A and move elsewhere like George Clooney who lives in England and I don't blame him. And there plenty of others who constantly criticize of what the music industry today becomes today which promote dumbass trends that not only poison the youth, but the adults also do it too.
Even men of this era are actually coming out stating it's very hard to find a decent woman these days that have the beautiful Angelic nature such as Tori and the same goes for those women who are trying to find a good honest man that doesn't place his own business out there(relationship, sex, anything dumb that is committed in the past), and wants to live life with someone who appreciate them and be happy with them. No one wants be with someone or a group of people who live and follow trends all the time because its boring and nearly all of them think arrogant and ignorant.

Yeah, I'm glad I'm not really "in my generation". Not following the trends, but keeping God first before all my desires and I see how everything is lining up perfectly accordingly to His will, because I realized that mine wasn't working! So I thank God that by His Grace that He kept me in a place where I don't think it's out dated! 🙌 But refreshing and STILL KNEW! Because His blood STILL FLOWS AND WORKS! AMEN! 🙏🙌 I don't speak from what other people say, pastors or anything but what I've experienced myself from God! Thank You O God and my Lord, my Savior, Jesus the Christ! 🙌🙏❤️❤️😊😊
I’m in this generation and I try to spread the gospel as much as possible. Like if somebody is going through something or stuff. And I don’t like that only like 2 of my friends are really dedicated to God. I love talking about God and going to church and knowing I have somebody to talk to all the time.

What separates Tori Kelly from other singers is her faith. I don't find her boring. I love just the way she is. Just be who You are! You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalms 139:14). I believe God will open the door for you that no one else can shut. The first time I heard you, I felt that you have the annointing of God. God bless!

I'm so glad that Tori Kelly did this video. I have been listening to her music for a few years now and I have looked up to her a lot. I am so happy that she gets to sing about her faith more and share it with the world. She is an inspiration for me in every way, and I am glad God is using her now 💛

I identify so much with Tori, not only with her music, but how she is as a person. It’s so counterculture to the world - to see someone so chill & comfortable in who God’s made her to be, and loving it and wanting to STAY that way. I’m truly inspired by her example.

I feel like Tori was speaking to me. I also sing and have dreams to grace the Big stages one day. But my insecurities that I’m too shy, too chill, too reserved, often surface and it’s hard for me to keep my focus away from those labels. Tori made me feel less alone and that if she was able to overcome it then I am more than capable too.

I love Tori so much...I truly thank God for her. I identify with her a lot because as a more introverted person I've always felt that I had to be more outgoing in order to be liked. Especially now that I'm in highschool I've struggled so much with my identity...I never want to be seen as boring so I put on a mask for people because I feel like it's what they want me to be. I sometimes really hate myself for being so quiet, and I really wish I could be like some of my friends. But it's not who God created me to be. Her testimony really helped me to see that I'm allowed to be myself. I'm allowed to embrace me for just being me. Thank you Tori❤

This is just another of many reasons why I love and adore you so much Tori! As a Christian myself I've always struggled to find my purpose and identity in Christ and I really needed this! All my life ive never really had friends or felt like I had a purpose and I was all alone. In high school I used to sit by myself at lunch in the senior cafeteria which was basically my own special room where me and a few other people considered undesirable or rejects and uncool sat alone and even they didnt want me to sit by them I was avoided like the plague like a leper like the least of these some kind of untouchable as people walked by me and stared silently laughing and judging me and people making fun of me for sitting by myself. I spent 6 years/5 and a half semesters worth at Eastern Michigan University getting my Bachelors Degree taking much longer than the intended 4 years and getting tens of thousands of dollars in debt and I spent the majority of my college career all alone in my room never going out and doing anything since I didnt have friends, and every time I went out and tried to make friends it ended in disaster and nothing came of it. My last year at EMU from Fall September 2016 to April 2017 I finally thought I found friends that loved and,cared about me in the EMU Athletes, especially the gymnasts, but I had plent of friends on the football, Baseball, softball, track and field, soccer, swim and dive and most of the teams as well and for a short while, for the first in a very long time, I was happy and felt loved and cared for. Unfortunately, one by one they started hurting betraying blocking and abandoning me one by one and then on January 21st, 2018, the worst day of my life, a bunch of them betrayed me and got me in trouble with the law and banned from campus and made me look like a bad guy that did something wrong and did horrible things to me and abandoned blocked hurt betrayed gave up on left and forsook me stopped caring and trying to help me and be my friend and made it clear they wanted nothing to do with me because I'm a burden and they broke their promise to always love and care about me and be my friend. They tossed me aside like garbage, no, worse than garbage, because at least garbage is properly taken out and handled with care, I was just thrown away and tossed aside until I was ripped all open like my heart and everything spilled out with no one to clean out the mess. I had never been more so hurt and broken and hopeless and dead inside in my life. For over the past half year ive been more depressed and suicidal and lost than ive ever been in my life. I feel like an unlovable burden and worthless piece of crap and waste of space that no one will ever love and care for and be friends with and be sad and care and miss me when I die, I feel like I AM that leper, that untouchable they avoid like the plague, the least of these and God's mistake, and dont really see the point of going on anymore, because I dont have friends that love and care about me that would be sad and care and miss me when I die! 😢🔫💀💔
But you give me hope! I know you'll never see and read this and maybe I'm wrong and you wouldnt care but I truly think youre different than all the other celebrities and fake people and fake friends out there and I relate a lot to what you said in your testimony and hope to God if I'm still here I meet you one day maybe even hangout and be friends and pray together, hope suicide isnt unforgivable and I can't lose and give up my salvation hope the reformed/calvinists are right but if I'm still here I'd love to just meet you and thank you for being a positive uplifting inspiration and influence that really helped me find hope in a tight spot and for being a light to the world and the salt of the Earth like Jesus commanded us to. I hope and pray to God I can meet you one day soon and perhaps finally make a friend and not be such an unlovable burden to everyone and mistake and blight and parasitic cancer to this world anymore one day soon.

It's funny. I knew I liked Tori from the moment I found out about her; I loved her voice, her music, her sweet and down-to-earth personality,... But there was just always something particularly beautiful about her that I couldn't place. Something that drew me to her and made me appreciate her as an artist that much more.

A year and a half ago my wife Alannah had a meltdown, never came home again. 7.5 years married, what she left was a letter in our mail stating it was over. No call, no conversation just a note. My world & heart shattered, but in that pain I turned to God, found comfort in your worship music. Id like to thank you for giving me the strength, peace I needed. If I could ask one thing, it would be for prayers for my unsaved beautiful wife, Alannah. She’s a beautiful soul with a gaping heart bc she refuses to submit to the Lord, therefore continues to struggle and conform to what the world has to offer.

I am not a little girl anymore (I am 22 yrs old) but I was so encouraged by Tori's story. I have never heard that feeling be expressed so perfectly but I am at that spot where I am trusting that all the insecurities I feel now are temporary and I have faith that God is building me into the woman I am supposed to be!
With every level of fame, and every musical and professional decision she makes... she finds even deeper who she is in Christ. Every day as a Christian is like this. It filters you. It is grounded within her very lyrics, and into her documented story of musicianship

I pray that she does become more and more famous, as God wills. Because she's a person God has gifted to reach the lost and, just like in this video, she can show the wonder of life with Him.

Wow I didn't realize how much pain all of the rejection had caused Tori. Her music projects such strength. What I've learned from her tearing up is that that strength didn't come without a fight to work through the pain. And her songs are such a fantastically empathetic anthem for those who feel they're fighting against those who misunderstand you and life and what is meaningful and important. Because they project such strength you forget--or don't realize--that the reason is because these messages have been lessons that she learned. And her songs are the messages that gave *her* strength.
I think there is truth in what Tori said about no longer needing to be famous and letting that expectation go. In her words, she gave up her path to God and put faith in him--resigned to letting her worries go. Although I don't believe in the creator that gives Tori such strength, once you stop caring about the end goal, you can truly be yourself. You can mess up. You can do or be whatever. You can get lost in the experience. Whatever happens happens. You stop holding your breath, stop worrying about what others think and just exist.

I love this woman. I got hooked on her December 2013 while watching her perform “Dear No One” on Ellen. So proud of who she’s becoming and the fact that she’s true to herself and what she believes. So happy for her life journey and her marriage!💕🙌🏾✨

I’ve followed tori since her covers on RUclips not knowing she was a Christian. Her beautiful voice always amazed me. Now that she’s come out with a gospel album I’m so proud of all that she’s accomplished and feel like she’s my friend lol. I relate to her so much and LOVED the verse she used.

I love how she never gave up and she always believed in herself. She has become someone to look up to and someone you can relate all of your feelings to, and I love that.
Tori and Christina Grimmie are so alike. Christina once said in a video how some producers tried to change her too. She wanted to stay true to her faith so to remind herself, she even got a tattoo saying "all is vanity." She was always asking a pastor for advice. I understand what Tori is saying and it's true. I think if singers want to be as famous as Ariana (for example, cos she's so famous rn), they really have to give up something.

Having been laughed at as a kid when asked what I was going to do for a job, by a probably well intentioned teacher) my reply being - snowboarding, and even now as I want to fix a vehicle that is NOT WORTH IT... I'm reminded that He has the plan. not a scattered thought, but one from the One. the one He thinks of me, all the time. on my mind, when I grind, far behind, all the rest but never mind. Watching this barley- a few years later, but this is speaking to me so much rn. I'm 22 and all my life i've been told "you're too quiet" or "loosen up a bit", but when i try, I feel like i'm not being true to myself and to God. I didn't used to care, but it started to get to me and I started to compare myself to other people, not just externally, but I started to compare myself internally and that's the hardest thing. This morning I asked God to remind me of my identity in him, so this video was perfect for the season that i'm in.

Tori speaks to me so hard. I was also in the same situation as she was before. People hated me because I was just being real especially with being autistic. My own closed ones will never understand where I stand for but I maintained my realness to myself.

Tori is a huge inspiration to me as a young christian girl, I'm an introvert and people always tell me you need to be more social , speak up for example to 2:17 to 2:37 is how I feel and I wish I were more outgoing but that's just me and I can't do anything about it I'm also really shy even more now because I have a hard time loving myself you know it's easier said then done and as much as I read bible verses saying that I'm God's creation I'm unique, It's still hard...
