About this Halloween Makeover:
Spooky graveyards with old tombstones are an easy and classic way to decorate your yard for Halloween. You can make it as scary or silly as you want (we personally love funny tombstone sayings)! Its easy to make your own headstones from scratch, but it’s even EASIER to upgrade store-bought tombstones.
We picked up a couple of new Styrofoam tombstones from Home Depot for our 2022 Halloween decorations. They actually were a good size and had some nice carving, but the paint job was a little plain and we wanted to add in our own epitaphs. Luckily, giving your Halloween store Tombstones an epic makeover is crazy easy! After sanding off any decorations that you don’t want, you can either carve in your own letters with a Dremel, or you can use 3D letters. Cover it with a coat of Drylok and some drippy layers of acrylic paint and you’ll have a realistic gravestone for Halloween that’s to die for 😄
If you’d rather make your own DIY Tombstones, we have a tutorial for that here - • How to make Tombstones... . We love making our own Halloween props and decorations from scratch, but giving existing props a makeover is also a lot of fun. Foam Tombstones from Spirit Halloween, Target, Home Depot, or even the Dollar Store can provide a great starting point, and with a little bit of DIY love you can transform them into a customized, realistic Halloween prop for your haunted house or Halloween yard display.

I love all your makeovers, especially the animatronic ones
It looks amazing
looks really good
If you want some rather good looking moss, you can get some ground sawdust or flocking, mix with some of the coarser version and paint/dye it in greens, then mix into a paste with either white glue or mod podge and apply with a cheap brush, when it dries, add a bit of a drybrush with a brighter green and seal it with a spray.
I haven't used it on full sized foam pieces, but I have on other things for decor and with miniatures.
How long do you suggest your pipe and rebar be?
As someone who has been married for over 20 years I have to say that the thing I like most about this channel is the fact that you both equally enjoy your builds and you work together as a team. Really inspiring.
The volume of content coming out this year is so awesome. I'm not doing any of these projects but it's so fun to watch
Glad to hear it! Thanks so much for watching.
The tips are useful for costume making though
This helps a lot! Great video! I heard you said it took lots of time to carve the words! What I do is make a stencil on my silhouette and put that on the tombstone then spray paint over it! It melts away the foam in the certain spot inside the words and makes an organic shape! And it’s so easy! Again, great video!
Yep that works well too!
Tried using awood burning tool, but it melts the foam too quickly.
For a lichen type moss, I ground down the Spanish moss you get from art craft stores with pistol and mortar and then sprinkled it over areas of the tombstone that I coated with modge podge. I also sprinkled dirt afterwards to fill in any areas for bonus points.
Great idea! Additionally, you may consider making a rough paste with the dried ground moss and glue/mod podge, and when it dries it will be rigid and not as susceptible to flaking off? I know with miniatures, people often soak the model making foam foliage in glue so it holds its shape and doesnt fall off.
Studsonstudios does modpodge and model flocking and that always looks convincing. But I wanna try the plastic Spanish moss in a blender like you mentioned.
This is what I do also just throw it in the blender ai get it from the dollar store then modge podge it on
@@jenniferperson1460 I was worried the moss would gunk up the blender; does it not? Also, does the blender grind it up enough? I would love to take out that manual labor element to the process :D
Oh great I gotta do this. I just came back from Scotland last week and it was amazing to see all different kinds on headstones in ancient rocks the standing stones of Callanish I’m thinking I would do cut out pieces of sheet Maas if you can get the green and then your idea.
HOBBY FLOCKING FOR MOSS. I CANNOT preach about it enough 🤣 mix some mod podge and isopropyl alcohol in a spray bottle to let the glue flow better, light spray and dust on accordingly. I've made some dioramas and I can't get enough of the stuff haha
Nice!!!! Will definitely try.
I love all of your Halloween crafts, they’re entertaining and very creative! Also your daughter is adorable 🥹💖
Awe thank you 😄
The immediate little pap on the mask when you showed it to your kiddo 😂 Great video guys! I love these existing prop makeovers, I hope yall enjoy making them!
We had the same issue with securing our headstones out here in Clovus, NM... so windy, esp this time of year!
We secured metal brackets to the back and used wooden dowels to stake in the ground... the wind would rattle them as they "rocked" back and forth to add like a creepy sound and make it look like something underneath was shaking them!
Get outta my head!!!!🤣🤣🤣 I bought these EXACT tombstones last week and have been looking for ideas the last few days. How freaky is this!!!👀💀🖤
Nice!!!!
No, they now live in your head making creepy crafts and waving around rebar swords :P
Frankendoll I have two tombstones with the skull and cross bones, the one Jay made over. So, like you, I'm glad that Jamie and Jay did a make over on store purchased tombstones.
I absolutely love these makeover videos, because you help teach us to make great custom decorations out of partially manufactured items. I don't have the time or the skill to make all the decorations from scratch, such as your custom tombstones from the construction foam, but I most definitely can ugly up a Halloween decoration with some letter stickers, paint and drylok.
Moss- glue small pencil shavings to your surface. (The kind that come out of the wall mounted school pencil sharpeners, or potentially a desktop electric one) You may want to add a couple layers. Once dry saturate with glue/water mixture to help secure. Color them green before or after. Some different shades of green dry brushed on really sells it
For moss stuff I just grind up dried moss from your local gardening supply shop. Sphagnum moss, spanish moss etc, put it in a bowl with clear elmers glue and just "paint" it on. Bonus: you can mix various paints to get the perfect colors for your moss.
I also was never able to "make" moss, and ended up going to my local crafts store (that starts with an "M") and buying their variety moss in packets. It was less 'DIY' but it got my druid staff project completed. Also flocking works, like is used in railroad modeling or ttrpg terrain. Depends on the look you want. Great work as always.
That’s a great solution though!! Good call.
I've done moss with fake snow, that comes in spray cans. It makes pretty nice flake texture, with good volume. A little bit of paint, and it really looks like moss!
This is awesome and totally going to give this one a go with our foam stones.
Where is the link for the mask!? I need that thing!
Yes!! I just added it to the video description
the tomb stones look so much better. Love your videos
This is the best Halloween channel out there 💀🎃🦴🧹🧙
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼😄
Agreed!
Your little helper is going to be the star of your show, cute, she is ready to help. Great job.
Kiddo is super cute! It's always charming watching kids learn. The little "dwemel", adorable.
Great video! I just got done making a couple tombstones for neighbors kids. I give them a template and have them design their own and then build them out. For the thinner store bought tombstones I've been attaching 1 inch pink foam and carving it down, texturing and painting it to match. that bulks it out and makes it look more substantial and gives you that extra space for anchors and what not.
I hope you guys can keep the DIYs coming for Christmas! I know you've done a few here and there but I love to see what you come up with!
How about a "Nightmare before Christmas" to take us between holidays ?! Perhaps a "faux grove" of trees with the holidays on them, like the movie ?!
Something else that works really well for making tombstones stay in the ground are jumbo bamboo skewers. You can usually get 20 or more in a package. Just sharpen the other end with a pencil sharpener and jam them in there, works like a champ!
I went to a gamer store...(one that has all the supplies for board gaming..i.e. trees, characters, grasses ) and they have moss in a jar. Ground up fine to put on a tombstone.
Love your channel. Very informative.
Ahhh yes good call
@@WickedMakers Or if you wanna go the true DIY route, some leafy kitchen spices (like oregano) do quite well for this, you might wanna seal them though, not sure if they'd survive a strong rain
Sawdust mixed with greens and browns in a disposable cup. Spread out on a cookie sheet or tin foil. Crumble occasionally as it dries. Very economical and easy to use!
These look incredible! I will definitely be using the pipe and rebar idea for my tombstones this year. Great video!
I found that Color Shot “Extra Guacamole” spray paint, using a light touch on the button to spatter the paint, makes a good moss color on tombstones.
I've done a number of foam-sculpting projects, professionally. I've actually introduced a LOT of Artists to that same Surform tool. It's one of my most important foam tools, along with a double-edged bread knife, a hacksaw, (people never believe me, the first time I tell them a hacksaw is the best tool for cutting soft cushion foam!) and a blow-dryer. I have NOT yet used a Dremel, like that, so I'm going to have to try that! Also, I need to try Drylock: In the past, I've used things like plaster of Paris mixed with wood glue.
In the theater sometimes they use a thick mixture of larger sawdust particles and glue to simulate mossy growth. It's then painted in moss like colors to achieve the desired affect
We actually JUST bought these exact tombstones for our yard before I even knew this video existed. Now I have to make a second trip to get some dry lock and stakes to keep them in the ground. Thanks so much, yours look amazing and I'm definitely taking your stake idea. We can't even get our heavier plastic stones to stay upright lol.
My plastic tombstones have a bottom that unscrews. Took it off and put play sand in a gallon baggie. Stuck it in and then screwed the bottom plate back on. Hope that helps!
Okay... need to use one of those masks to make a scifi zombie for next year.
Hahah yes
Thank you so much for the idea of getting the tombstones to stay up. I live in Southern California and it never fails that I put my tombstones up and within the next few days we get Santa Ana winds. As always, love watching u guys! 🖤
Foam flocking would make a great moss. For these large scale projects, probably cheapest to DIY a large batch (videos online how to do this). Then just apply with PVC glue / mod podge, and then do a sealing layer with watered down glue/podge sprayed on.
i feel like no one says it enough you guys are so so cute together 😭 the chemistry is THERE and its so wholesome
Loved the tombstones!!! Also your little helper was adorable!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
Btw, your Halloween countdown clock in the background is a day off! Just thought you should know!
For standing tombstones, I glue a 1x3 to the bottom, and screw a second one to it (forming an X) after Halloween rotate the second board so it stores flat.
I would second the flocking for moss (in model railroading hobby shops it called “ground foam”)
Nice!!!
"like any project we could noodle on these forever"😂 the _noodle_ makes me smile hard every time!
U-u-
Ur mom.
Excellent makeover, as always. I might have to turn the old garden into a cemetery this year.
Your daughter is absolutely adorable. She's so smart. She picked out the button on the Dremel right away. Kids love buttons!! Lol. Another great "How To" guys. Keep up the hard work!
Also, I'm the one last week who talked about how much braver we other haunters are thanks to your videos. 😊 Thank you so much for doing another tombstone improvement video. (And for always using safety equipment prominently on screen! A lot of crafty RUclipsrs don't do that, and it makes me grind my teeth.)
I love that about them. And Evan and Katelyn for their full mask set up for resin/specifying the fume extractor for welding.
Those look so much better and so realistic looking!
Great makeover. Quick and easy. That original Morris the cat shirt is very cool .
Happy spooky month! It’s finally October! I love all the crafts you do, it’s so fun to watch! 🎃👻👻💀🎃
So glad for you guys! Your videos are killing it!
😄😄 thanks!!
This looks so good! My inlaws have a bunch of tombstones in their front yard, which I feel like could look better, and now I know how to do so! They already put them out in the yard this year, so maybe next year they can get a pre Halloween makeover!
Saw dust flocking makes great mossy texture especially if you make like 3 or 4 colors seperatly then when dry you mix them together, like for example one thats forrest green, one thats like a burnt sienna, one thats like a chocolate brown, one thats a cammo green and maybe one thats a cool grey. When you have them dry you can just pop them in a blender and make them in to a finer dust if need be, and just use white pva glue and layer them untill they look cool and natural. You can use other colors too if you want moulds and stuff like that too of course.
I made big wood stakes and hammered them into the ground then duct taped the back of the gravestone to the wood stake. 3 years and counting on some of those stakes. Also smaller grave stones work exactly the same and it's easy clean and quick. Plus you can use just about any kind of stick or scrap wood pieces.
An additional tip is to make the pvc tube distance the same on every tombstone you have (say 12 inches) so you can rearrange the tombstones without having to move the rebar. As others have said, the model railroad ground cover foam mixed with glue makes a nice thick moss. Takes some time to dry but seems quite durable.
I made a template with a board, drilling two holes in it to use as guides for both drilling the tombstones and for banging the rebar into the ground.
These look great. I would have used a sea sponge or some kinda sponge to paint on moss with different shades of green, brown and yellow. I very rarely see headstones with chunks of dense moss. Its usually just a light greenish tinge over time. And i live in the oldest city in Canada so we have lots of graveyards that are historical. Sometimes you will see them with vines of ivy on them but thats usually near a building that also has it. 🎃🖤
A static grass applicator could really help put moss on the stones. I like the ones used in making miniature scenery.
Love your channel. Plus, you guys always have the best t-shirts! For moss you might want to try shrubbery from woodland scenics. You guys might already know about the their products. They have all kinds of things that may work for you.
Awesome job dudes! The tombstones looks amazing. The stone texture is so good that you should do something like: How to make a DIY Gargoyle (to sit on an entry pillar, something like that).
Thanks!!! Yeah gargoyle would be crazy fun.
Great video as always! One way to do easy moss is to mix coarse sawdust with some watered down green acrylic paint, let it dry, and then mix that green sawdust with PVA glue and paint it on. When it's dry it looks just like moss!
Omg your daughter is freaking adorable!!
Really appreciate this video, I have a whole graveyard set up I do every year so this gives me some great ideas! I was thinking you could definitely put some moss at the bottom of the tombstones, unfortunately I don't know a good way to make any lol. I do have a question that you guys may be able to help with. I have a low lying fog machine I put in my graveyard but unlike the conventional fog machines where you can buy a tube extension with holes in order to disperse the fog over a wider area, I have not seen any such attachments for a low lying fog machine. Do you have any ideas on how I may be able to spread out the low lying fog more evenly so it's not just in one concentrated area? Any suggestions are welcome!
😄😄😄 We just use a big irrigation hose and point the fog machine at it. It doesn’t need to attach to it. Would that work?
@@WickedMakers actually yea! Lol thanks!
@@jennalogan5552 PVC - you can get it in black, easier to hide !
@@m.maclellan7147 that works too. Thanks! :)
Awesome job! You can get the green moss & moss sheets at the dollar twenty five store, cut or tear them up over a container and use the finer pieces or dust. Also wondering on the stencil one if you masked off the rest if spray paint would just do all the etching (dremel) work for you?
Yeah that definitely works!! A bit harder to control but way easier.
Wow. thank you guys these videos help me so when the time to start diy Halloween projects I know how to do these projects .as Halloween is not big in Australia but I am going to try out some of these next year as I can't doe it this year or the year after as I have to save a bit of money to get the thing I need ❤️
Thanks!! Glad they’re helpful for you 😄
As I did also found the the scarecrow on eBay but I don't have enough money to get it and I have to get a power adaptor that can change Australia to USA power adaptor that you can buy in international travel section
To make the illusion of moss, Flocking works great. But you would need to carefully spray on some clear weather protection to protect it. Flocking can get messy, so keep that in mind.
Light airbrushing of different colored paint also helps add depth to the flocking. Add very mini flowers with some dirt and it'll look more realistic. I cool thing to try us to add additional foam to build up the area first. This way you can add little spider or bee holes.
Additionally; using flocking made up of a variety of earth colors (different tones if greens and browns) may be best, instead of airbrushing the colors on.
Look up diorama tutorials for best flocking methods.
Love your videos, have binge watched them since discovering you recently. Halfway through my own sitting scarecrow makeover after being inspired by your video. Keep up the awesome work.
For moss, I just use model railroad scenery moss. Tombstones look great! I thought you guys were going to do something rebar-y for placing the tombstones, thought about that in the past, now you've confirmed its a good way to go. I'll be changing mine over. Great tips!
AWWW lil helper T^T
Very cool guys!!! I'm going to change mine!
Nice!!!!
Cuteness overload with your little baby! ❤
My dad and i always just hammered sharpened dowel rods in through the bottom and stuck em in the ground. Worked a treat for us! Great makeover tips, i love how great the drippy watered paint looked.
Love all of your special effects and makeup even the re-creating Halloween animechtronic characters and turning them in to other ones from great creativity
I've been loving these videos you two together crack me up. Great way to make moss stuffing and spray paint.
I've seen/heard that shredded sponges and dye can make realistic looking moss. Dyed fiber spider webs could also work.
Keep up the great content... gets better year after year...
Hello! Love your videos, we're planning on using your fog machine trick for our graveyard setup this year =) I didn't see the link for the safety mask, could you share that please? That would make a great mask for a space suit or hazard suit type costume!
I just added it!
I feel like I would be better at doing this then starting from scratch 😅😅 Thanks for the vid!!
Yeah it’s super fun too 😄
She is so adorable 🥰
😊😊😊😊
I love your videos
🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
You could also glue down some diorama moss or static moss to the tombstones
I love it! My girlfriend and I are both obsessed with Halloween and horror and can’t wait to get a house so we can make crafts like this. Very well done.
A good moss mix is: dryer lint and green paint and glue it on to the tombstone. It works!
One of the best things about DryLok for stones is that you can tint the brilliant white whatever color you want at the department store. This year, I got cement, grey/blue, and red sandstone tinted DryLok buckets and that TREMENDOUSLY saved on time for tombstone production.
Spooky Sunday Peeps. Always love a Wicked Makers glow up 👻✨️
Omg you're daughter is adorable, loved the tombstones so much more after you guys redone them
I ❤️ all of your creations! Such great stuff! 😊👍🏻🤘🏻
I loved the sword montage it made me laugh at work.
Reminds me of one of my favorite Halloween memories. A friends and I were throwing a party and we had the ideal that we would make styrofoam tombstones for each of our guest - as kind of a party favor they could take home with them when they left the party. We spent months doing about 40 of them - each a unique design for the guest. We used all sorts of tools like exacto-knives for cutting out the lettering and hot knives for shaping and 'weathering' the tombstone. We did both positive and negative reliefs for the lettering and designs. It took us like a week of experimentation for the paint. We of course wanted a stone look to them but we quickly found that any normal spray paint would melt/dissolve the foam. After some trial and error we found that water based spray paints do not melt the styrofoam. Using a black water based paint as a primer allowed us to use the faux stone spray paints. It made the tombstones look fantastic. It has been many, many years since that and I couldn't tell you who made the faux stone paints but I do remember the name of the stone/color that looked the best to us was called "London Fog". It had this dark gray, with random black that would happen. We had a lot of impressed guests that halloween party.
I burned out on Halloween about 5 years ago and haven't done an outdoor display since, but recently I've started to feel the old Halloween vibes again and watching your videos has definitely gotten the old spooky juices flowing. I won't be able to do anything this year, but next year I think will be my return.
Excellent! This just gives you more time to work on stuff without having to stress out about getting done in time!
For Moss, I’ve had great results with wood glue, watered down and dryer lint! Mix some green craft paint in to color to your liking and it works great!
For the moss part is like get caft moss or hay and molch it up would work
A great way to do moss is to get some moss from like the hobby store with the fake plant stuff and you can glue some on in a way it would naturally grow on a stone, I did the same trick to spice up the bland tombstone of Pam v. Aka Jason's mom and it looks amazing.
You asked about moss, Hobby lobby has several different types of moss and some great plastic vines
I make moss with floral sponges and paint. Chop the up in a food processor or tear them. If you cut the edges are too straight. Then you paint them with different colors of acrylic. I like to put the in a bucket and stir the colors in. Let dry, shred smaller and paint again. Let dray then glue wherever you like
Love them. They look so much better now. Can’t wait to try it. Happy October!
I love when you take the store stuff and you make it 100 times nicer or should I say scarier! 👍🏻👍🏻😎🎃💀👻
For the moss, I feel like you could take all the scrap crumbly foam sprinkles from phase one of the project, roll them around in some drab green paint, and then glue them on at the end
I have a can of latex house paint that I got from a place that was going out of business. When I opened it I realized that it had no pigment in it. It is just the clear latex base that is in the can before you have your color added to it. So, I decided to try it as a foam sealer and it worked really well. I have been able to use it for multiple years and would suggest it to anyone.
Foam or faux velvet flocking mixed into a thick paste with mod podge and stippled on with a thick brush gives a good moss look.
Awesome job on the Tombstone Makeover. For standing up my tombstones, I put a point on a thin wooden stake then glue velcro to the wooden stake and the back of the tombstone. I can pound the wooden stake into the ground, then just press the tombstone to the velcro coverd wooden stake.
Your little one is absolutely precious!! Loved the upgrade guys!! I really enjoy these "up-do" videos! It helps those of us with less time, money, space or natural creativity to still be able to have something more unique than every other neighbor! Thank you so much!
Thanks for this video. Very helpful. I have found a pencil soldering iron will melt styrofoam to create the recessed engraved look for lettering. If you want to make wide deep cuts I have taken a soldering gun (the type that has the tip that is a silvery 'bent wire' that attaches to shafts coming out of the gun with screws). I took 14 gauge copper wire and bent a square loop that can be used as a square bottom 'scoop' do carve deep groves.
Static grass and it's applicator are a great way for moss, it's used for models and things like dioramas; it's pretty neat, looks great, and there's some pretty cheap options out there for it too
Great video guys! Thanks for it! Hollywood Haunters do awesome moss on tombstones. So does Martha Stewart.
Turned out great. I never would have thought of raised letters. Thanks for the tips.
I love how the scarecrow is just chillin in the back
Thank you so much for your amazing videos. :) I am definitely a Halloweenaholic, and love how creative and awesome your ideas are.
Use Spanish moss. You can spray it with a preservative and make it kind of weather proof and also make it last for years to come. Glue in place with mod podge
Can't wait for Halloween!!! I love it more than Christmas!! Well... I get excited for Christmas on like the 1st of December where as halloween is everyday in my world 😂
These are so cool love your videos gets me into the Halloween season!!
