About this Halloween Animatronic Prop:
The sitting scarecrow animatronic from Spirit Halloween looks suspiciously like he's sleeping. A bowl of candy resides in his lap. When an unsuspecting trick-or-treater reaches in to choose a piece, a motion detector triggers the scarecrow's head to snap up and he cackles a maniacal laugh. Is it scary? Sure… But for this Halloween, we wanted to transform him into the scarecrow from your nightmares. A scarecrow inspired by the DC Comics Scarecrow from Batman.
After the unboxing, we started by weathering his clothes and giving him new pants. When we cut off his burlap mask, we discovered a screaming plastic head underneath. Was this a long discarded head repurposed by Spirit as a simple base, or does this scarecrow actually hold a more sinister secret? Either way, the head made a perfect form for a new burlap scarecrow mask, now with glowing red eyes and a stitched up joker-like smile. A new burlap hat completed his look.
We love making our own Halloween props and decorations from scratch, but giving existing props a makeover is also a lot of fun. Spirit Halloween animatronics can provide a great starting point, and with a little bit of DIY love you can transform them into something spectacular for your haunted house or Halloween yard display.

Fun fact, the face under the burlap was originally used on another prop, Resurrection Mary from 2010, also at Spirit. They must have decided that that mold was just right to use with Sitting Scarecrow. I love that you made good use of it, I think that's pretty creative.

When I went trick or treating somebody was a sitting scarecrow. He sat really still in a scarecrow costume and if you grabbed more than 1 piece of candy he would yell at you. One of the scariest Halloween decorations when I was younger.

I saw the same concept except it was a child wearing a scarecrow costume standing extremely still on a small platform on a stick so he appeared like a real scarecrow. Me and my family could not tell if it was a person or decoration until we went to the front door and turned around and he was staring right at us lol
Actually it screams at you if you take even one piece, it has a sensor.

I remember watching this video last Halloween to spruce up our old scarecrow. When I saw the new Spirit scarecrow…I knew exactly where they got the idea from. Wish you guys could’ve got your props!

As I watched this makeover and once you’re did the burlap mask and added all the details, I couldn’t help but think it looked like Johnathan Crane aka The Scarecrow from the Batman comics and 90s animated series. I love it and think it looks awesome, it would totally scare the shit out of me even as an adult!

I came here to say this exact same thing! All the updates are WEIRDLY similar to this version, even down to the brown pants, the glowing eyes, the sewn mouth. There's probably not enough grounds to sue or anything, but if I was these artists, I'd be really mad.

I just realized that spirit Halloween probably took inspiration from you and made the “scary sitting scarecrow” this year in 2023
question: for this 2023 season, spirit is re releasing the sitting scarecrow, but now its called the "scary sitting scarecrow" and it looks very similar, almost identical to your makeover, did you guys work with them, or you think they took inspiration from your version?
We did not work with them on it. Its basically identical to ours so yeah they took inspiration.

This really reminds me of Scarecrow from Batman the Animated Series.
From the hat to the hair like straw to the smile cut into the burlap.
All he need is a red shirt and he'd be a dead ringer for Dr. Jonathan Crane.
Would you be able to replace the spring with a stronger one? I love the design but he's less scary because he isn't as quick.

I quite agree. The new design is leaps and bounds above the store design, but the quick snap really helps with the scare factor
I agree! I came to the comments to say this! He just needs to be faster. The slow rise is kind of anticlimactic and wouldn't scare me as much, personally. It's the unnatural speed of the quick SNAP up that helps make him terrifying. Because it really leans into what makes a jump scare a JUMP SCARE.
These Spirit animatronic makeovers are 1000% what I come for, you madcraft wizards! Love to see what crawls, creeps and skitters out of the Wicked Makers lab.

my favorite part of this whole project is how they made the head so much scarier, using the already included, but not used face underneath
I used to work in a Spirit Halloween, and it was my favorite job to have! I loved having the animatronics around to see how they worked, and watching customers get spooked was hilarious! (My favorite was the controllable spider that we called the store pet). I had no idea the scarecrow actually had a sculpted face underneath! Thats awesome! :D Your videos are so cool, and informative in a way! Oh, and its called a “seam ripper”!
Another excellent makeover of an existing prop. You said that it was pretty popular in your area, so if the kids see others first, then yours they'd get an extra surprise!!

That is one of the few Spirit outa the box displays that is actually jump scare scary, and the y'all dialed it up by several magnitudes! Awesome! I really wish that you'd do a video of your yard the night of Halloween!

As an artist myself, I can totally relate to putting time and effort into a project and not having it work as intended or function properly but we always persevere :) the original scarecrow face was scarier without the burlap than with it! Lol but once again you guys knocked this one out of the ballpark! Love it!❤❤

I gasped at the full head and face underneath and loved the analogy of finding hardwood floor underneath! They def must have had a bunch of molds those heads around 😂 amazing end result too, sooo cool!!
This definitely looks better and will get a better reaction when people walk up. If you two can find it, I recommend another spirit of Halloween prop called the widow neck break It's a woman with nice realistic features set in a scream. She standing just chilling but all of a sudden her neck just snaps. Love to see what you guys can do with her.

Edit: at 12:48 you can try using small sewing scissors. There are smaller scissors you can buy in sewing sections that are used for small details and thread. Gives you more control and better angles

there is a theme park in England called Thorpe Park, and the Halloween event there is terrifying. One of their scare mazes is called the crows of mawkin meadows and it is worth a look. Also the new ghost train is full of inspiration.

As someone who owns a sitting scarecrow I can tell you that it doesn't come with the chair, that's the one thing you will have to provide yourself. I've seen many different videos of these in peoples haunts but never seen one as cool as yours, and that includes mine. Kinda wanna remake mine now.

I swear, I’m so so glad RUclips recommended this channel I think I used to watch them when they made chicken wire sculptures for Halloween. As yesterday I was watching the recreation of the swinging girl & the witch, also the haunted mirror omg these young individuals never fail to impress! I'm glad you added in the hat difficulties, I know every single crafty person has been in that situation where the creative vision takes you somewhere and physics just goes "nope! not happening!". Overcoming that is all part of the process.
Went to a spirit yesterday and turns out they redid the mask and now they actually have that stitched smile like yours has. Seems you did a good enough to inspire the actual product.

Huge and horrifying difference between the pre and post makeover!! Amazing!!
I love the upgrades you did on this guy. Looks way cooler. A thought I had to increase the brightness of the eyes without adding weight would be to paint the inside of the head white. It would reflect the light way better than the dark grey plastic giving the eyes a more intense glow even when using smaller lights.

Excellent idea to take store bought props and customize them to be unique. Everyone who buys these props should do this, but I don’t think they realize they can. Perhaps now they will be inspired to do so. Great idea for a series of videos!
This is awesome. I was thinking, instead of him sitting on a chair, prop him upright like an actual scarecrow. I think that would make him even more creepy.
As a weekday keyboard warrior and weekend DIYer, I've found that the paint-on band aid liquid is great for small cuts or puncture wounds (from, for example, a wire brush incident), since it seals well and lets you wash your hands without irritating it further.
