  • Shiretoko Peninsula is located on the easternmost portion of the Japanese island of Hokkaidō, protruding into the Sea of Okhotsk.
Shiretoko National Park covers most of the Shiretoko Peninsula at the northeastern tip of the island of Hokkaidō, Japan. The word "Shiretoko" is derived from an Ainu word "sir etok", meaning "the place where the earth protrudes".
The Shiretoko Peninsula was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, in recognition of the peninsula being the southernmost point where sea ice usually forms in the Northern Hemisphere.

Went to Shiretoko for my honeymoon after getting married in 2016... Very memorable... One of the lesser explored places in Hokkaido.

Thank you for this. I have been there driving across Hokkaido in 2015. Indeed, Hokkaido is a nature's wonder. However, I didn't have much time to cover up to this place. I would include this in my future road trip to Hokkaido.
