Oregonian here: this tradition is in my own family! My mom describes this combination being served at home when she was young, cooked by my grandmother. We may not be from the midwest, but the idea is not foreign to us at all!
Didn't see the previous video, just seeing this now, but man, that combo actually sounds pretty good. You get that sweet and spicy combo thats super good. Idk what those crazy commenters were thinking
Grew up and currently live in one of the cities you visited and I can %100 confirm that getting it in restaurants isn't something I've commonly seen but I can remember every time we got chili at school we got cinnamon rolls on the same day though I don't hink they were covered with chili but seperate. Also can confirm most abandoned our forks and just scooped the chili with the cinnamon roll and would clean our plates. I always thought this was a just something everyone did as a kid like fries dipped into frosties/ice cream.
People tend to think that just because they've never heard of or seen something that it doesn't exist. If anything. that just means one needs to broaden their horizons.
When you consider the multitude of chili combos, I'm not surprised there is something like the cinnamon roll + chili. Keep doing your thing. I love your videos.
I lost an entire middle school friend group over mixing chocolate milk into my ice cream cups to make softserve, so I get feeling of receiving hate for food combos, even ones that make perfect sense. If you wanna get a lil weirder, peanut butter on (plain) cheeseburgers is great.
Wtf why? That sounds like such a good idea! I'm going to try that some time (choc milk in ice cream). As for PB cheeseburgers... well, peanut sauce is a common thing in many places (usually South East Asian cuisines) and while I don't really like it myself, there are tons of people who do. I think PB on a cheeseburger is not that far off
I love mixing in milk to ice cream to make it soft-serve consistency too 😁 I thought it was just me who did that tbh lmao. Don't think I've ever tried chocolate milk but that sounds like a good idea depending on the flavor of ice cream. And about the friends you say you lost, I guess the they never heard of a milkshake? 😂😂
My school used to serve this every other Wednesday. They always had cinnamon rolls on Wednesday mornings for breakfast and used the leftovers for lunch. One week it'd be chili, the next it'd be "Italian Dunkers" which was breadsticks with meat sauce. Great video.
I actually tried a combo similar to this a few weeks ago, it was amazing! My cinnamon roll was more croissant like and the topping was like a butter pecan spread with pecans on it. I even let my 19 month old son try it and he was hooked!

As someone born and raised in Ireland, the idea of chilli on an elementary school menu is mind-blowing 😂. Feeding spice to children? I can hear my mum yelling about upset stomachs already 😅. This combo sounds awesome though. Sweet and savoury is really good, and the texture of dough and stew is an absolute classic, it’s so soothing and homely. The people that say that chili and cinnamon rolls are weird is like saying chicken and waffles is weird. Waffles aren't that sweet but it's not like you just put a pinch of sugar. Maybe that's reach.
I feel like chicken and waffles makes more sense since it’s essentially just replacing bacon on the salt side. It’s honestly probably the way the chili looks that makes it unappealing. I mean people eat with their eyes.
@@solarmoth4628 Chili resembles a lot of Desi food, so it looks pretty appealing to me. I've always wanted to try it. I admit I was taken aback at the cinnamon roll combo, though. When I was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas back when I was active duty, I remembered going to a diner outside post called "Stacy's" a diner that I would regularly go to after my OSHA training before being discharged. I would order a cinnamon roll with chili on the side and a double cheeseburger with chili cheese fries. Most of the young people never really knew about the combination. But the older generation who I bumped into at the diner taught me about this combination and I fell in love with it ever since. Is it common? Maybe not anymore. But it was common enough to be recommended to me by both the waitress and diners I met over there. To this day, I still miss the combination and I think about Stacy's every time I reminisce the years of my service back in Kansas. I miss it and I think about going back every time, just to have that one cinnamon roll with chili on top. It was a great part of my time back in Kansas. I recommend people to try it to this day, even if people crap on me for recommending it. But what do you expect from people? I get crapped on for eating steak tartare, so there's no winning with some people hahaha.

Lisa : travels and makes a what feels like a mini doc proving it is a thing
The comments were rude, she has every right to make whatever content she pleases.
Also this is such a typical American comment right here😶
And im not speaking to all Americans
Perhaps it's the fact that you're not used to Lisa making document videos, and you feel like it doesn't work on her
Im gonna keep on commenting cause im also petty
This legit looks like a movie. Two friends after being bashed for presenting something that they thought was genius, goes on a road trip to find the origin of the thing, learns so many more things, having fun. So cool.
It sounds like a type of food that would show up at a state fair, i would try it since it seems like it would be a hidden gem. Great video by the way! keep up the good work!
Thank you!
Pineapples on pizza, cinnamon rolls and chili, If someone enjoys a food combo how does it effect you if they eat it!!
I love you Lisa please never stop creating because someone was needlessly rude!
Ya you are right
People overreact so hard to pineapple on pizza. It's so normal.
I don't not like pineapple on pizza. That being said, who am I to stop other of what they like.
@@dylanefg Exactly. I loved that topping as a kid and could never understand all the controversy. I think some people just hop onto trends for the hype. It's ridiculously stupid.
@@Contrarian-v7p hawaiian pizza has to be the most common pizza in singapore, and i’m not hearing many complaints, it’s good stuff to me
I'm literally german but even I've heard of the cinnamon roles and chilli combo. The fact people think you made this up is ridiculous.
This is like when people finally figured out Fried Chicken and Waffles. I’m not shocked that this was a combo.
I really like the “documentary movie vibes” from this video. The driving, the people testing the food, narrating the things you were doing, showing the places you go, interviewing other people. It just felt like a very nice edit.
Lol lisa slapped the haters with facts.....proud of her😌😌✋✋
She just exhausted all her ammunitions on her haters like she killed em 😂😂

LIAR!
I think PB on a cheeseburger is not that far off
They sound petty probably a good reason you lost them
you really got shit over a chocolate milkshake. people will get salty over the smallest things.
Peanut butter cheeseburgers are great! Especially if you go full board and throw the jam or chilli jam in there, it can be wonderful
I scrolled through those comments, some were mean and others were very racist. I'm glad your still on RUclips Lisa. People are just hating on your success, nothing but jealous haters.
No it is some preference and few might hate the idea of combining the cinnamon rolls with chilli and cinnamon roll with ice cream flavours like chocolate, vanilla, butterscotch and strawberry is better combination than chilli.
@@ShantiDoss2000 yes, of course it is just preference and they may hate the food combo but that is no reason to shit on and call someone a liar. But of course, it is the Internet
I agree with all of you and some are just racist
@@ShantiDoss2000 it’s fine if u don’t like it, but some people take it too far lmao. It kinda crosses the line of “preference” when they downright insult the creator.
The internet is...interesting. Taking a negative comment experience and turning it into content is SMART!
My favorite childhood dish! When I lived on the East Coast, the hospital where I worked sold “Oklahoma Chili” which I informed them was impossible especially without the cinnamon roll.
I love Lisa's tiktoks and was disappointed her YT channel doesn't have long videos, would love to see more long form youtube videos from her
Some people were just simply not taught etiquette, courtesy and just being respectful when they disagree with something. It’s ok to disagree but u don’t have to be an asshole about it. Keep doing what you’re doing, killing the game. 🤙🔥
Welcome to the internet, sadly people can be mean here without any real consequences. So they're just like they want to be, don't quit. I really enjoy your content. And also the most weird things are just so good as one ;)
Don't even think about quitting the internet ever -your videos and Jeanelle's videos are my fav to eat breakfast with ! You literally make my day !!!

Your videos are so refreshing, and I really enjoy your personality! I always look forward to the variety of content in your videos 💓
Yes they do serve these at school, I remember this combo. I was shocked that anyone even remembers. Lisa, don't you worry about the negative comments, your doing a great job, and I like how your willing to try the crazy combos and also you bring back the forgotten foods. Keep doing what your doing, and don't let the critics make you feel bad about it because your doing outstanding!
I'm glad you didn't quit the internet! Your videos inspired me to start cooking again (something I had lost all passion for) and to try new foods. Now I'm gonna make this lol
This roughly reminds me of my favorite combination of the foods concha’s (Mexican pastry) with frijoles (beans) 😊😋. So if I ever go to the Midwest, and go to a diner that serves this combo, I’m definitely trying cinnamon rolls and chili.
I have never heard of conchas and frijoles. if you go to Midwest make sure it’s like Nebraska or Missouri because I’ve never heard of cinnamon rolls with chili in Wisconsin
Well I mean I’m not surprised, being Mexican American and living in a border town you’d know what they are but, i feel like Wisconsin is too far to know about conchas because I have a friend who’s from Michigan and knew nothing about Mexican food until she came to Arizona. But thanks for the tip I’ll keep that in mind!
@@MIMITAS29 I have heard of them separately, I never had them together is what I meant. There are 4 different Mexican stores and Mexican restaurants in my city alone.
@@marichu899 Wow i feel dumb now but, you should try it tho, it’s so good! The sweet concha and then the salty refried beans just so yummy!😋 really good comfort food. Go to the store and get the concha and then go to the Mexican restaurant and just order some frijoles, and if they put queso fresco on it that’s fine it adds to the goodness ☺️
Born & raised in Northwest Fl, Chili & Cinnamon rolls was common on our menu in elementary school. I don’t see why people would think this was a weird or non-existent food combo… now Im hungry 😄
Cinnamon is perfect in savoury dishes as well as sweet. Combining the two just seems logical. Just, not for kids THINK OF THE KIDS 😂😂😂
@@JustMeUpNorthChili, despite the name, isn’t always made spicy.

I wouldn’t knock it until I tried it!!! Love this explanation!!! You are not an idiot. I know you wouldn’t play us like that!!!! Keep sharing your ideas and your past experiences. ❤️❤️❤️
The people that say that chili and cinnamon rolls are weird is like saying chicken and waffles is weird. Waffles aren't that sweet but it's not like you just put a pinch of sugar. Maybe that's reach.
Nah you usually put maple syrup on them so that’s pretty accurate it’s like maple bacon
I do like sweet and savory/salty combos, but rarely with meats, so Idk if I would like it. But I know there's things like prosciutto-wrapped melon, cola chicken, etc. so theoretically this combo should work too for those who like that kind of thing
I love chili and cinnamon rolls. Don't listen to people who say it's not a thing. They have no idea what they're missing. 🤤🤤

you also have IMMENSE grace oh my goodness
It was always served in school for me, also my family always made cinnamon rolls with chili. I grew up in Olathe, Kansas.
This is just one origin story, as spots in Nebraska, Colorado, and Washington say they have served the same meal in schools dating back to the 1960s. Those cafeteria lunches from their childhood were fondly remembered in adulthood and now chili and cinnamon rolls are a staple meal in homes all over the Midwest. And yes I've eaten it when I used to live in Joplin, Missouri.👊😋👍
Washington? I've never seen this in Washington. I mean, I wish, but it doesn't exist here so much in the PNW.
My mom is from Colorado, though, I wonder if she's had it.
@@Congiary I'm a retired truck driver I've eaten this dish in Washington and parts of Colorado and Missouri all the way down in Louisiana. But I a lot of drunk drivers like myself who have eaten the style dish in truck stops.

i pretty much like any sweet- savoury spicy combo. it just goes so well everytime! here in India we've a dessert called malpua which eaten with savory spicy chickpea gravy. It's so yummmm. Cinnamon rolls going along with spicy gravies is totally understandable. Bet it tastes just amazing.
Yeah you go Lisa! Personally I wouldn't try this combo because I don't like chilli, but at school I put mayo on stale fries, don't yuck someone else's yum guys! At least not over and over and do it nicely

dude that last cinnamon roll has me drooooooling… the way he made it was so satisfying to look at
When I was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas back when I was active duty, I remembered going to a diner outside post called "Stacy's" a diner that I would regularly go to after my OSHA training before being discharged.
Im excited for this! I love trying sweet and salty so ive been wanting to try this for a while. Also its not all that weird, chinese five spice has cinnamon in it too 🤷♂️
We had chili and cinnamon rolls a lot for lunch at school here in Nebraska. I love this video so much. Makes me happy seeing my stats on your channel.
Real big props on this one Lisa. The proper way to fight negativity is through education. Such an awesome and informative episode
i'm from NY and i've heard of this combo before. kinda weird that people were telling you that you were lying about your own food experiences in KS. and considering i know plenty of people who put peanut butter in their chili, it's really not hard to imagine combining chili with another sweet thing, especially something with a bready texture.
"They didn't have cinnamon rolls.."
*What is life.*
I honestly don’t see how people got mad over this? Then again it is the internet 🤷♂️ but sweet and savory has always been a thing. It just balances eachother out

Cinnamon roll and chili doesn’t sound like an insane combo like most ppl might think. Cinnamon is a common ingredient in some chilis. Even chocolate powder too. So a cinnamon roll makes sense. Now I really want to try this combo!

I like cinnamon rolls but I am not a fan of chilli. Though, I do love a combo of sweet and savoury. I might try it.
I agree with the school lunch ladies coming up with it. It is definitely a winter food in our house and our church has a yearly chili feed where we bring cinnamon rolls for dessert.

Honestly, whoever said it was bad is crazy. I would DEFINETLY try it at my school, but my school has something called cowboy bread, which is a brown sugar cinnamon bread.
I’ve actually never tried cinnamon rolls and chili. After all those years of them being together on the school lunch menu, I always ate the separately. Sadly I found out that I was allergic to gluten a few years ago, but I’ll have to make some gluten free cinnamon rolls to try this!

You go, Lisa!!! 💖💖 It was so nice that your friend Kyle went to different places with you too.
This combo made sense to me. My grandma used to add cinnamon to her chili and it was delicious. So something like a sweet cinnamon roll and then the savory chili seems bomb 💣
The beef version of chicken and waffles. Never had it, but it makes sense. This Ripley's Believe It Or Not take on regional American food seems like a goldmine for engaging content.
It doesn't sound bad too me honestly, it's pretty much bread with chilli, but the bread is sweet, and I'm pretty sure the flavour of the chilli would overpower much of the sweetness
I had no idea people hated this combo....I too grew up having this in elementary school! I only realized it wasn't a "normal" thing on the West Coast (where I live) when my husband remarked that he'd never had it. I guess my school's chef must've been from the Midwest! My Mom's parents were from the Midwest so we ate this at home a lot as well. I love this combination of sweet and savory, it's such good comfort food. Keep up the good work Lisa! 👏
