Some people say it looks good but how would it really look in a real scenario. I say when practioners are exposed to these variations it gives us/ them a way better guage to comfortably blend into attacks with blades 10 folds than those who dont have a freakin clue on what to do. Good job to kuya Doug and thanks for sharing.
great video. True understanding of Entry principles and manipulation of body mechanics. take notes everyone! love the scarf applications as well. can use many things in its place, shirt, belt ect.
so, you guys using Karambit. Karambit in Minangkabau pronounce 'Karambiak'. We used originally for clearing grass. It was inspired by our ancestors when they fought Tigers. Tigers claws. We use Karambit only for Silat practitioners, since its gave deadly wounds.
how i wish to learn this style of martial art, if i have the opportunity to learn this one i will grab it, i want to learn sir post more video plz, i practice arnis but not that good enough
muscle memory must be your first priority not free sparing.... so you need to focus on flow drills.... Kali is just like boxing... it is built on drills and not simply memorizing techniques.... a civilian who enters in a boxing ring will not have style, footwork and sharp reflexes because he has not developed the muscle memory... fight and flight mechanism kicks in the brain... But a boxer with muscle memory will have style, flow, footwork, speed and sharp reflexes and technique when he enters the ring....
@@phiAndpi I getcha:) However you must understand, much of filipino martial arts isn't about competition and friendly free sparring. To my understanding, what you are seeing here if done at full throttle will ABSOLUTELY cause major injury. This isn't something like friendly MMA here, these techniques were used in real survival situations, not to get points, subdue the opponent and impress your girlfriend..so much:)
@@pryzmcat yeah i agree with you, this technique are being used by millitary personels in a life and death situations thats why in sparring it would be different,
So where is jakes videos?? He seems to think he is above it all. I would like to to see how its really done. LMFAO Mr Marcaida-your work is spectacular. Only someone that is not in the know would criticize what you are doing here. Fucking keyboard warriors. Beauty in brutality.
Ok, My height is 5'4 and with an average body and let's say I already mastered this technique. And somebody assaulted me with the height of 5'11 with a masculine body.. What are my chances?
it can't because because disarming at fullspeed will also brake the bone at the same time.kali is defending with attacking with serious damage.; bad english
I always learn something, sometimes very subtle things, like noticing Guro's demeanor and inner calmness. That has to be cultivated. To me, the inner warrior is where the power comes from..and control does not come from rage and anger, nor does true power. This type of flow, to my understanding. comes from being able find the power of silence from within, to be able to use the fire within, and control it in good measure. Love this video:) I see some bridges from Silat here as well:) Om namah Shivaya, jai sri Kali/Parvati.
Silat Serbia kali is highly evolved martial art.... just look at the empty hand technique of kali.. it uses bob, weave, parry, slip, block which are similar to boxing.... but the trappings are similar to silat or wing chun.....
I am well familiar with all of the arts you mentioned mate, especialy in Silat and SE Asian arts including Kali, Kuntao and some styles of Kung Fu. And as i said in my comment this video is packed with Silat, wether this instructor has evolved towards other arts or wether his teacher evolved towards other arts is irrelevant.
I would love to see someone execute these moves in full speed and in a real senario. They are to complicated to execute in full speed when the adrenalin is pumping and you got a real knife pointed at you.
Kali is a system meant for real use! Tribal wars are fought with it to this day. You are going to get cut as with any knife fighting, the trick is stopping the threat during that exchange. Its about constant motion, constant attack , defeating balance while minimizing the damage to yourself. This is more akin to a combative than a martial art in the western sense. Like gunfighting, empty hand or anything else your level of skill and practice determines how effective you will be and the level of techniques you can deploy
Thats what im saying that this is to complicated for real world use and is only good for art forms. Ofc there is more simple things that could be used but they are really simple and thats what works in real life.
Jakelol1980 we train complex to to have skills to make our "simple" better. Make no mistake..we can fight simple because of this at a high level than those that don't go above and beyond their capabilities. And what we do? Is fun.
Real life is not this... Kombato rules for real self defense. Kali Silat with the Kombato way will give real chance to keep your integrity in a bad situation. The only way to learn is fighting back.
the Kali way is street fight Weapons/ Improvised Weapons oriented strategy..... so expect that a Kali practitioner would be killing the enemy with pencil or scissors or pen or other improvised weapons to neutralize the threat before he uses empty hand technique..... The Kali way alone is more than enough in a street fight....... I have seen videos of Kombato and I see that it borrowed a lot of techniques from Kali especially the stick fighting techniques and the improvised weapons principles........
Remember, none of these guys are even TRYING to fight back...total crock 'o crap compared to real life. His face would be broken before he could do all that...
I understand this is done primarily in a demonstrative but it would have been great if his "dummy" had not been so cooperative. He may just be capable of kind kicking my 90 year old grandma's ass but if I stand there, like his dummy, my grandma is much more skilled at using a scarf on me( plus she can dress me better) ;she can also carve a mean Turkey. She would probably be more skilled as well ay carving up this boy's stool-pigeon!
In these arts, it's NEVER good to resist the teacher. In these cultures, people often try to prove themselves/disprove the teachers...so often times these teachers are carrying live blades. You don't want to be that guy, a better way to approach it is to say, "well, what if I do THIS...." It's more productive and doesn't disrespect the teacher, and disrespect to the teacher (even if it's not his school) is a good way to get the whole school after you. Not worth it. - Rick - 3 years Kali/Silat - Silentwarriorartsfederation.com -
Riqtube I think he meant sparring type resistance. Something that isn't quite sparring yet, but a transition so you can move your skills into that area. "Aliveness" is the word.
I see what you mean, but during the demo is NOT the time to put up resistance. That's embarrassing to the teacher and can (will) lead to NOT sparring type resistance by the teacher. The arts are strange and you never know the intent of your Uke. Always best to wait till the class is training the technique and suggest it privately...can't go wrong there.
I walked into a school for a demo after being in the area 6 days, and I got put to the test as soon as I walked in. Alot of folks come through this guy's school claiming to know Filipino arts. He introduces me to one of his Guros (black belts), puts a long blade in my hand and tells the guy to start swinging at me. I then get tossed around the class (because I'm the youngest guy there) and am the non-volunteer Uke. I now have the respect of everyone there and they want to teach me their WHOLE system. In these arts, humility/temperance is ALSO a part of your testing.
Well I understand you then...I think. :P I'm not really a "sport" guy, but at the same time, seeing similar methods at higher frequency is always a good thing. I know of people similar to Doug who will "gear up" with modded out lacrosse gloves and hockey masks.
Doug be like...THIS SCARF... WILL KEEL!!! *grins XD

Why dont they try so that they will know...too much question never finish a thing.
You are making me love this fighting style Doug
Doug M is simply too good with the karambit......god like !

Doug Marcaida is the most lethal weapon in the world.
I absolutely enjoyed that video. AWESOME! Techniques, I would love to learn this fine e art. Not many places that teach this in NYC.

i absolutely love these videos, many thanks, have you any clips on the use of two karambits?

id hate to see what he could do with a napkin.... So much respect for this guy.
Never mind full speed lets see it in a free sparing situation

"But a boxer with muscle memory will have style,"
And Spar. My original comments remains.
phiAndpi you don't get muscle memory by sparing immediately.... you get it by drills... that is why boxing and Kali has many drills...

Amazing!!
I tried my hand at a little hand to hand combat and knives and sticks at a club, and say this stuff is lethal. Great eye and hand coordination though.
Guro is not using his eyes to see.
Think Doug's new saying is just keep swimming

Why is this video named Kali way when is pure Indonesian Silat most of the video with a tiny bit of Kali?
Silat Serbia kali is a mixture of silat, kung fu, boxing, and japanese arts... that is why you will see certain similarities with silat....
*
Topherodesk No mate Kali is Kali, Kung fu is Kung fu and Silat is Silat. However youtube is a powerful tool and some people like "borrowing" :-)

If this was so effective then the most armys in the world would use it but they dont because its to compicated in real life.
