There's nothing that can be done to raise completion rates, anyone who actively browses and attempts to clear games from their backlog giving games multiple chances knows that games rely on you being in the mood and headspace for many aspects of the genre and the game itself, the vibe, the presentation, the pace and sometimes it just doesn't click and it's impossible to define why or how all the parts come together at the right time in your head and on the games side of things. So many things need to align.

I agree with your entire paragraph except the opening sentence. Or the start of the opening sentence because...ya know, punctuation and such, sir.
But everything you say is true about all art and entertainment. But all art and entertainment can also be improved to make it better and more interesting for an audience. That's what play testing and focus testing and iteration is all about, no?

@DavidJaffeGames Yeah, yurrrr right. Perhaps a neuroscientist and a philosopher can get together with a game designer and figure it out. Maybe in podcast form. 🤔 Someone versed in game theory also.

I’ve gone through the phase where I want to try every popular game, from every popular genre, but just had to accept that certain genres just aren’t for me. My brain does not jive with survival/crafting games, or strategy games. I think if it like film. Some people love horror, some don’t. I think we approach games like they’re different somehow, but they’re not. If anything they should be more polarizing because of the interactive quality. Maybe certain platformers aren’t your forte. (I’m not saying you can’t like platformers or whatever, there are always exceptions. I’m mean generally)

    • @DavidJaffeGames
      @DavidJaffeGames  7 дней назад +2

Great way of putting it; esp about the film stuff. It's true. But as to platformers, perhaps the issue there is the definition of genre in games. If Astro Bot is a platformer, then what is Ratchet Rift Apart? I love the latter but find the former a chore once the difficulty kicks in.

  • @FortheLoveofGamingYT

I had a similar issue with Astrobot, it’s almost like I need to commit to more frustration in order to play the full game. It’s clearly a well made game but there is some really difficult aspects to playing through that for myself is just too much at times to keep playing. I don’t always dislike losing in a game generally but as Jaffe was saying, it can be not enjoyable to have to just keep playing again in order to make it further. It’s something more common in games nowadays, like Black Myth Wukong, I can’t get myself to play through the whole game when it’s ridiculously hard to play (And Wukong is an amazing game, I just don’t find myself wanting to dedicate time to actually finish it).

Good luck on your tabletop adventures! DND is great, of course, but my personal favorite system is GURPS! I love that system personally because it’s basically a meta-verse system where you could have any type of technology, magic, etc. and it also has a ton of role-playing options that don’t even involve combat if you so wish. It’s easy with dice, you only need 3 6 sided dice, no need to worry about other dice.

There are two main reasons I stop playing a game, one is unintentional and I just get distracted by another game either new or old. The second is intentional and it is usually because I get tired of the game loop and need to stop to take an extended break from that game. Eventually I come back to it but it can be a couple months or more. There have been only a small number of times where I have decided to no longer play a game but those reasons vary quite a bit. Coincidentally the chameleon boss is where I left off on Astrobot, but do plan to get back to it soon once I get through another game I’ve been pulled back into recently.

8:57 I felt this way about Wukong during the early dragon boss in chapter 3. The fact that it kept backing away so I had to spend 50% of the fight sprinting towards it, which didn’t apply any skills I had learned previously…it just made it annoying rather than fun (coming from someone who likes hard games)

What makes me give up a game is if I feel it's wasting my time. In Bug for the Sega Saturn, for example, if you fail, you have to start all the way over from the beginning of the world. Levels are very long and have sparse checkpoints. The game just isn't very fun to play.

Playing Balatro+ on Apple Arcade tonight. What a unique hook making a roguelike poker video game. There are also a lot of games like this boomer shooter you are showing that are just paint by numbers attempts at a game. It’s like someone who isn’t really an artist looking at a reference image and copying it as best they can. With enough time and the right tools they can probably put together something that looks pretty close, but what happens when you take that reference image away? What can you create from your own passion, inspiration and creativity? That is what makes great art.

Had this issue with Twisted Metal Black recently. Its like I couldn't "get good" at the single player without resorting to god mode which sucked the fun out of it. Eventually, I used a gameshark cheat that allowed me to increase the lives by 2 and it made all the difference. Finished the entire story mode and frigging loved it. Got good enough that I no longer needed the cheat!

I'd love to know what you think of this thought I had. I look at music, and where its at now, it is perfectly accepted and legitimate to enjoy any music, from any era, or even new music that has the feel of a previous era. Let's boil that down into composition, recording quality, production value and mix clarity. Now compare these to things to games - like gameplay, graphics, production value and image quality. Why is it that someone could release an album now, with the attributes of lets say an 80's record, and critics don't complain about the "poor recording quality", for example, because that's a specific part of that sound. but with games, lets take hollow body - I love how it looks, it has a ps2 style feel, and the textures are so gritty and have personality. But one critic on meteoritic called the graphics "lackluster.". When will games that use a PS2 style art style/graphics be equally accepted as a modern AAA game with photorealistic graphics? Now that we can do "amazing" graphics, and it's a choice, when can we all accept that PS2 style graphics are equally "amazing" (and a choice) in that they bring something more akin to an impressionist painting, when compared to a photorealistic painting? It really bugs me. Anyway, I love this new series, Looking forward to more!

My Take: I am 53 also, took me 3 tries for that boss, took me way more for the next one and only 1 try for the final boss. You have #2 options
#1 decide that the fun and enjoyment you experienced to that point was less than the frustration you are having and move on.
#2 decide that the fun and enjoyment you experienced thus far out ways the frustration and just take a break, move to a new game and come back later.
Simple as that. You are not pid to finish it, so you do not report to anyone. Video games are a form of interactive entertainment. Sure, some would say art. However, first and foremost these are “Games”. People play games for fun and enjoy, ent or for a challenge & competition. When you find yourself needing to force yourself to keep playing, this rarely leads to fun.
The world will still revolve round the Sun and the sun will still rise even if you stop playing.

The condescending people you deal with in the comments section I try to avoid on the internet like plague but they just magically find my comments. I don't mind debate but act like a hollier than thou righteous crusader and that will piss me off.
That point about Indiana Jones is pretty fascinating too. An example for me is how much I like Dragon Ball Z and yet whole Cell Saga could've been avoided if they just trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber during the 3 years before the androids showed up, it's obvious the Time Chamber was just made up as the story went along but I still like the show anyway and that part of the show knowing this whole thing. Hell, the Saga even begins with Bulma wishing to use the Dragon Balls to find Dr. Gero and his lab before the androids pop and everyone's like, "NOPE WE CAN HANDLE THIS". I still like it in spite of that.
Another example is the Matrix, I like the Matrix, but once Trinity got out of the Matrix the Agent Smith subway fight all the way to when Smith shoots Neo and "kills" him could've been cut out. Smith could just kill Neo and have no subway fight or chase scene and everything would've played out the sameway, Trinity still does the revival kiss and brings back Neo. I still like the Matrix and still enjoy the Smith fight on the subway.
Then there is movies like Highlander where the whole thing pretty much starts falling apart immediately the more you start thinking about the story logically. I still like it but parts of the movie just makes me scratch my head.
There is nothing wrong with criticizing things you like, at the very least it won't make it feel like you are part of an undying religion. Making a religion out of fiction is just dumb.

Some games are just way too long for what I'm getting from them. Some games have too much talking or waiting for an "action" game. I've never got anywhere with a metal gear game. Camera control in modern third person controller games is not fun to me, but honestly I just don't start playing those games any more, so completion is not the problem.

  • @civilwarfare101

I beat Astro Bot yesterday but moment to moment enemy encounters either feel like enemy attacks lack telegraphing or the hitboxes are way too strict. When playing Astro Bot, a lot of the time, I never felt like I was competent, it was because I got lucky. I think Team Asobi knows this so they liter their levels with so many checkpoints, so it's like scrape by a combat encounter make one jump and BAM checkpoint.
I don't even know how you could fix this, make the hit box timing not as strict, that could make bosses less annoying, and giving Astro a health bar or the ability to have 1 more hit point could also help. I never even knew why games like Mario, Rayman, Donkey Kong and Crash lets you search around the level to get 1 more hp until now. I don't think 3D Mario games having a health bar in them ruined those games either.

There's got to be some fuzzy ratio for "perfect-sequence-challenge" to "toolset variety", where without the right balance you don't have enough tools to deal with the difficulty of a challenge, and without hard enough challenges you have too many useless tools.
Dark Souls has plenty of perfect sequence challenges, but also a huge toolset to attempt them with. As one side increases, maybe the other needs to increase so that when someone *gets stuck* it doesn't also feel like staleness due to lack of options.
