Fun fact: the dev was so upset with the game getting age-rating flagged for gambling (despite absolutely zero mentions or encouragement of IRL gambling) that they WROTE INTO THEIR WILL that Balatro as an IP will never be able to be touched by casinos or anyone trying to adapt it actual gambling.

If you liked Another Crab's Treasure, perhaps Clash: Artifacts of Chaos may be interesting, a 2023 game and a prequel to Zeno Clash. Likewise very colorful and creative with many weird creatures, though not *quite* a Soulslike. Awesome atmosphere and music with solid gameplay and writing. Aside from getting lost sometimes i'd say there's not really any downsides to it.
It's more melee and martial arts-oriented than weaponry, too. I prefer to speak of it as its own thing but if i had to compare it with something, it would be God Hand.

"I guess what I'm trying to say is that this game feels like it deserves an entry on the SCP wiki as a cognitohazard. I can't get it out of my head. Highly recommended, run away while you still can."
It's rare a game hooks me in that fast.

  • @comedysalmon

Another game I'd highly recommend trying is Worldless, it came out last November and it honestly astounds me how little traction its garnered. It's a metroidvania with my all time favorite combat system, where you have to defeat opponents by absorbing them for new skills without accidentally killing them, and it plays like a mix between turn based combat and a fighting game. There's also a free demo that does a great job at introducing how in-depth the combat can get.
It's also absolutely gorgeous aesthetically, with a minimalist art style where character designs are outlined with various points like a constellation, and their full form can only be briefly viewed when struck by an attack.

Thank you for not talking about the fact that you can turn off the timer in Unsighted. It isn't good and too many reviewers pretend like its a good option. So much of the game comes from the timer mechanic and it is by far the longest thing people talk about when they talk about the game. Even yourself said there isn't anything crazy to the game other than being solid without the timer mechanic. But a lot of reviewers see that option and look on their experience with the timer and recommend the game with the timer off despite never actually trying it. So good on you for being the one reviewer to actually not do that whether intentional or not

That all being said, for the eventual and seemingly inevitable Season 2 I hope that In Stars and Time, if it wasn't already talked about before and I just somehow missed it, can be featured. 24:39 not only that but also the level design and game design is incredibly smart with the whole time mechanic, you already showed the spin jump that skips water, that is a secret tech for water movement, the ""intended"" way is to get ice grenades and later on ice shuriken to create ice platforms, but if you are skilled enough, you can get nearly everything blocked by water in the whole game with only the spinner, that is but one mechanic, you can also walljump, there are puzzles in the overworld that are like, push block then climb, that takes a lot of time, with the walljump you can just bypass that, the game gives you quite literally a fuck you button that you can press at will, any obstacle the game gives you, it also gives you 3 or more options to do it faster, exploration not only is rewarded with more meteor dust to keep people alive, but skill is rewarded by exploring faster and better and saving even more time; yet another example, the first dungeon intended order, you leave the dungeon, do A WALK that wastes a shit ton of time, just to get the shuriken and burn the roots to proceed through the dungeon, alternatively, you could also parry the anima monsters at the end of the prologue instead of losing to them, if you do so, you'll be rewarded with a flame sword, problem solved, you can skip right to the end of the dungeon no questions asked, if you lose that, you can also quickly get 3 meteor dusts and give to the weaponsmith in the initial town, his reward is a sword that has all 3 elements at the same time, including fire, so yet again, problem solved, you can also just go straight to the library for the second dungeon, get the spinner, and break the rocks blocking the wasted city, getting access to Rachel's Axe really soon, aka the best damaging weapon in the game, there is a LOT you can do, you can even get the final dungeon AT THE FUCKING PROLOGUE, and do the dungeons at inverted order, this game is just a lot, and I fucking love it

Hey Yakko, I'm actually a bit of a nerd when it comes to 3D Platformers and know about the existence of some you may like, as you said in the Penny's Big Breakaway segment that there aren't that many. I will say though, I haven't played any of them yet because I've also been dabbling around with music production and analyzing many weird and groundbreaking soundtracks, so I can't tell you how good these are:
    - Orbo's Odyssey
    - Demon Turf
    - Blue Fire
    - Super Sammy Roll
    - Corn Kidz 64
    - Cavern of Dreams
    - Super Kiwi 64 (just like Toree 3D, this game is tiny and extremely cheap)
    - Sephonie
    - Castle on the Coast
    - PsiloSybil (Crash Bandicoot style)
And that's all I have, hope your music production endeavours go well :)

Void Stranger is probably the first game I’ve discovered that I would more likely recommend watching a playthrough of over actually playing it yourself. It’s an experience worth having no matter who you are, but it is _incredibly_ frustrating to a person that doesn’t click with it.

Thank you for all the effort you put into your videos. Just know that whether it's a compilation of reviews or a single review or anything else you're interested in making, many of us will always be here, ready to watch It. Especially your game of music videos; those are awesome.

an almost hour long video for this series?
    sign me up
sad to hear this is gonna be the season 1 finale for this series
but I do respect it and yeah these videos take time to make don't blame you at all
if I have to wait 6 months heck even a year for season 2, I will because that's how good this series is
you show people games that deserve more attention and tell us why its worth our time to check out
Yakkcomn it is a crime that you don't have 1 million subscribers with how much effort and time you put in these videos
you have earned it in my book to get the Gold slab that is for 1 million subscribers
best of luck to you with whatever you got planned next to work on
    oh and one more thing

Also, I appreciated you not delving too deeply into Void Stranger, I'm actually in the middle of playing the game myself and almost skipped the section, but listening through it was nice as it added to how cool the game's been so far and reassured to me that I can approach those sorts of games as shared experiences with friends when it comes to figuring out puzzles together and whatnot!

I've been watching these vids since the first one, and my memory's a bit faulty, so I don't remember if you already did, but you HAVE to check out Wandersong. I myself played that game years ago, and I honestly don't remember the last time I sat down for 10 hours and just played a game to completion in one setting, and felt genuine happiness and had a smile on my face afterwards. It's storytelling is done rather nicely, and it uses the main mechanic in interesting creative ways without getting boring either, genuinely one of my favourite indie game experience of all time

I have to say, the visibility in Rabbit and Steel gets a little better as you play and start learning patterns, even with things you haven't seen before. I play with the default palette on 4 person lobbies and I can tell who is messing up before it happens. That being said, my friends and I did play on lunar for enough consecutive hours that if we blinked we would start seeing the game's attacks. Anyway!

    Gonna recommend ASTLIBRA: Revision.
Banger action RPG made by one guy over 15 years and while it shows for both good and bad, you can really tell the guy was passionate for a genre that was in need of more additions like it.
Level design may not be the greatest, and it looks like a mid-2000's flash game at best, but you can really tell the guy learned how to design more efficiently as he made more, this ain't even mentioning its actual gameplay which is simply great! Tons of weapon variety, free stat respecs and what might be one of my favourite character progression system to date, a literal maze of stat ups, new skill and weapon unlocks along with other systems for passive buffs which requires sidelining items.
It makes a weak first impression but if you keep pushing, there really is something special to appreciate, it only gets better as you keep going.
Another game I'll recommend albeit having not finished it yet is Inkbound, an interesting strategy roguelite that knows how to make you feel powerful with the right upgrades.
Not much more to say on this but seemingly there's not a whole lot of people playing it after release and its multiplayer is really easy to get into.
