I recall in the late 60s VK played this Raag for the first time to the Calcutta public.
Calcuttans were known for their "conservative" views regarding classical music. As expected, VK was dragged over the coals in the English daily ( Statesman)--- most Bengali newspapers took the cue from Kumar Mukherjee who was Statesman's music critic.
Sorry to say, but being a bengali myself, I have to mention that bengalis are prone to pseudo-intellectual excesses, otherwise who on earth could have panned this amazing masterpiece of a raga. Make no mistake, this sounds much sweeter to me than traditional Darbari Kanada.
@@Prof_Hazra_IIT Kumarprasad Mukherjee was the greatest connoisseur of his time and was a great friend of VK. But he never used to shirk from informed criticism of either VK or RS, himself being a student of Bhatkhande, Lucknow. Personal likes do not license anybody to malign a critic, who used to argue technically. Adding a nishad does not significantly change the ethos of Darbari and do not improve over Mian Tansen.
Oh God..!!! Indians and the tell-tale tales of one-upmanship. Ustad Ali Akhbar Khan after almost performing Darbari Kanada for more than 50 years in concerts on one fine evening in 1990's announced that I am going to play Darari Kanada today. Please excuse me for all my past renditions of Darbari Kanada...they were all wrong. So do you think Mr. Ranjan babu, that you are in a position to demean someone's art purely based on a music critic's opinion. Choice is yours. With Namashkaars 🙏🙏🙏🙏.
