  • MIAMI(AP) As the final moments ticked away in the greatest scoring show of his career, Dwyane Wade was summoned to the New York Knicks' bench for a quick word.
"It's kind of ridiculous,'' Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni told him, "that you're this good.''
Get ready, Atlanta: Wade looks primed for the playoffs.
Wade scored 55 points, one shy of the franchise record, and the Miami Heat wrapped up the No. 5 spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs by beating the Knicks 122-105 on Sunday night. The Heat will visit fourth-seeded Atlanta when the opening playoff round starts this weekend.
"I came in early and I was very focused,'' Wade said. "My teammates thought something was wrong with me because I wasn't talking.''
Nothing was wrong. Not even close.
Wade shot 19-for-30 from the field, set a career high with six 3-pointers, and nearly topped Glen Rice's record of 56 points before leaving with 1:06 remaining. Some in the crowd - even at least one member of the Heat coaching staff - wanted Wade to get one more chance at the record, but Heat coach Erik Spoelstra chose not to take the risk.
"He's broken every other record,'' Spoelstra said. "Let's leave one of them to Glen Rice.''
Michael Beasley finished with 28 points and 16 rebounds for the Heat, who also got 15 points from Mario Chalmers.
Al Harrington and Wilson Chandler each scored 21 points for New York. Quentin Richardson finished with 14 and David Lee had an 11-point, 11-rebound night for the Knicks.
Wade scored for the final time with 5:31 remaining. Only then did the Knicks figure out how to stop him, well after it was too late.
"He just made them all tonight,'' Harrington said. "When he is hot, you are in for a long night.''
Wade's MVP candidacy is so important to the Heat that the franchise took the step - rare for them - of campaigning for the award. Last week, the team sent out a promotional DVD to postseason award voters, along with a T-shirt and paperweight bearing an "M-V-3'' logo, a nod to Wade's jersey number.
Now, the DVD is already outdated. This might have been his best show of the season.
He was diving on the floor for loose balls, finished with nine rebounds, and dominated the Knicks in Miami for the second time this season.
"He just has a remarkable way of rising to the occasion,'' Spoelstra said.
It was the 11th 50-point game in the NBA this season, the third by Wade - matching Cleveland's LeBron James for the league's high - and the third against the Knicks. Kobe Bryant got the NBA season-best point total with 61 in Madison Square Garden on Feb. 2, and James scored 52 at New York's famed arena two nights later.
Wade now has six of the eight highest-scoring games in Heat history, four of them this season.
Consecutive 3-pointers by Wade late in the third quarter put Miami up 95-87. He reached 50 points on an 8-footer with 26.4 seconds left in the third quarter, meaning the Heat entered the final period leading by six, and with the rest of Wade's teammates trailing him by three.
Yes, through three quarters, it was Wade 50, Rest of Heat 47.
He became the first player since Bryant to score 50 before the fourth quarter began. Bryant did it Nov. 30, 2006 against Utah, getting 52 through three periods and not playing in the fourth, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
"When you have a guy like him, you can just ride him,'' D'Antoni said.
And when it was over, the Heat heard quick words from Spoelstra in the locker room, then huddled around a TV in the training room to see Toronto beat Philadelphia - clinching the No. 5 spot for Miami. A bit of irony: Former Heat forward Shawn Marion had a steal in the final seconds to ice that win for the Raptors.
"We got some help from those guys,'' said Heat forward Jermaine O'Neal, who was traded to Miami from Toronto, with Marion going to the Raptors in February. "And we took care of our business.''
The Knicks' season ends Wednesday, and accordingly, they played a loose style.
Larry Hughes intercepted a pass at one end, dribbled the other way and spun a behind-the-back flip to Chris Wilcox - who ran over Heat forward James Jones on his way to a three-point play that drew New York within 37-32 with 11:08 left in the half.

Beasleys performance that day was overshadowed by Wade's 55, but it was still a great show he will be better next year

im tired of all these people talking about that beasley is a draft bust, he is no draft bust my friends kobe averaged 7 pts his rookie season look at him now, its too soon to determine something like that, he shows promise, hes a rookie, rookies make mistakes but he`ll learn and make adjustments. sooner or later hes definetly gonna shine

I agree with you. Being a Laker fan I din't watch Beasley a whole lot but the kid is only 20 with allllot of upside. It would be a mistake for the Heat to trade him.

either way the heat still need a consistent big-time scorer which beasley isn't quite yet. he is young and still too inconsistent to provide this but he will likely do so after a few years. do you think he should start next season and if he does will he fulfill that aforementioned role?

he played like this, then he would not have been traded. Hopefully he can do this every night in Minnesota. Just not against the Heat though

How many times do two or more players set their career high in scoring in the same game? (Wade, Beasley) Not many, I'd think; the bad players probably do it more often than the good ones because their scoring highs are lower.

Your ignorant comments suggest that you think that everyone who goes to rehab or gets arrested is just a useless, good for nothing problem to society. How pathetic are you? Get some real arguments.

the majority of athletes are overpaid, sport athletes are overpaid period, michael is young and arrogant he had his way throught highschool and college now hes in a slump so hes doing really obnoxious things but if you see athletes/celebs in general, most have drug abuse problems, but what they do on court is totally different off court he and the greats have problems behind the scenes look at michael jackson. but afterall beasley is in rehab, he wants help and needs it so hopefully he'll change

  • @Brem66

Hilarious. Don't bother telling 41elliot to die that accomplishes nothing. Instead, ask him for some facts, info, records, stats, or anything that backs up the junk he is spewing. He is a malicious hater who has nothing to go on.
