We see the shirtless prisoner tied up, the whip crossing his back, his facial expressions in reaction, and the effect it has on some of the crew. Continuity is maintained as his back grows increasingly more crimson as the whipping proceeds, and we see him slumping toward the end.
Well all I can say is that Quintel really does excell in laceration to the rears of these bastards with brutal and beautiful force. Of course, under the Captain's command, he also shows a very good rhythm with his awesome striking power.

I think Mills’ accusation of thievery is rather flimsy. What would the captain’s motive have been to have cheese taken off the ship when he was preparing to depart on a long sea journey? Given that, and the time period and context, I think Mills got off rather lightly. A sailor in those days would have received at least six dozen lashes. Of course, we need to bear in mind that it is a motion picture. Movie producers abhor real time scenes, so two dozen, filmed with many reaction shots, is all we are going to get. The purpose of the scene, moreover, was to let viewers see a virile man stripped to the waist and having the lash applied to his bare back. The scene is filmed quite well, because Mills’ back becomes increasingly more crimson as the flogging proceeds. Later on, when he is about to have relations with the Tahitian maiden, we see the scars on his back. Any excuse will serve as the buildup to such a scene.
A psychic told me that in a past life I was a sailor in the British army and the captain frequently had me stripped down and whipped in front of everyone. According to the psychic, both the captain and all the crew mates enjoyed seeing me squirm and moan under the pain of the lash. I guess I provided the favorite entertainment for the long voyages.
