As a PREK teacher, Tell knows that the ICK is REAL. My least favorite ICK is teachers acting like they are in highschool and cliquing up; spreading rumors/personal business/favoritism, ESPECIALLY in front of the kids.

When I was teaching music, I was in a classroom and told a kid to move to purple (move their clip up) and the poor kid was so used to moving their clip down that they almost put it on yellow. Luckily, I was watching and ready to go a group “whoop-whoop!” and helped him move it to purple. I got rid of my clip chart in my 1st grade classroom last year and was excited to throw it in the garbage where it belonged.

I just finished watching the podcast. One of my favorite things was on the first day of kindergarten when one of the dads who came to pick up his son recognized me as his kindergarten teacher! He ran into the room shouting “I knew it was you! I knew it was you!” He came over and gave me a big hug , and said to the other parents that I had been his kindergarten teacher.
His son was a sweet boy, who looked just like his dad.

I would like to give an ick and a yas (what I call a non-ick):
    1. Ick - Teachers not supporting other teachers. Most of the things you described would be more bearable if your colleagues were supportive, but if they aren’t, it makes life in the classroom impossible.
    2. Yas - when the students do something unexpected that brightens your day. I was dealing with a death in the family and unbearably sick last year at the same time. When I got back, my students came together and bought me a care package with treats, and Harry Potter mug, and gel pens! They also wrote a note that was so encouraging. They did it without any prompting from anyone else.

My senior year government teacher could care less about teaching. I couldn’t tell you anything I learned cause I didn’t. Our tests and quizzes we were having our study guides with us. And the study guides we just filled in blanks by following it on the board. And we were always done like 30-45 minutes early. And we just did nothing the whole time. Like… while it was made an easy class to pass. But it would had been nice to be able to remember material we were taught. And I don’t. Cause we weren’t.

To be fair I think AP classes are super needed although the elitism is fucked up. I genuinely think educational standards are much lower than what students of high school ages can handle (but that’s a different convo). I would have been so terribly bored in regular classes. Like I had a friend who was having mental health issues and failed honors English 2 and had to do regular English 3 and she was venting to me about how they’d spent over a month writing a one page essay about patriotism. On the other hand I had an AP history teacher that told our class that we were all going to college and the kids across the hall (regular history) would be doing manual labor and I did think that was incredibly fucked up to say

I teach young preschool (3 year olds). A physical ICK for me is when kids pick their nose then eat their boogers, or lick their snot instead of getting a tissue 🤢

I HATED it. Cause our lunch was like, 1-2 hours away from the end of the day. The head janitor at my husband's school decided he was going to do his part in helping the district save money by having the building's AC turn off at noon. School dismissed at 2:40 and it was miserably hot by the time school got out. By the time my husband's afterschool clubs finished, it was so hot it was hard to breathe. I should probably mention that he's a Network Security and Information Technology instructor and has 30 computers in his room that run all day long. He begged them for two years to keep the AC on because his room would be over 90 degrees by the end of the day. It wasn't until he reminded the district that the building's computer servers were housed in a closet in the back of his room, they must be kept cool, and would cost tens of thousands of dollars to replace should they overheat that they finally decided it wasn't worth the savings to keep shutting the AC off at noon. His building is the newest building in the district (built almost 20 years ago) and was built without windows that open in the classrooms because it's fully air conditioned (unlike the other buildings in the district), so opening a window wasn't an option.

I had to laugh at the handkerchief part. My Dad carried a handkerchief from as early back as I can remember. He had a job that his hands got dirty. And finally after ruining the nice white handkerchiefs, my Mom started getting him dark colored handkerchiefs . And I remember laughing about it. Thinking how gross it was he snotted in it and then stuck it back in his pocket. And plus with the dark color of the square of fabric the snot showed up well. But also dirty finger prints didn’t show up either.

Not giving a pen back is terrible edicate. I'm in a choir, and some never bring a pencil (required because we mark things that may need to be later erased). Someone borrowers my pencil because I always bring two and they don't give it back. I'm like hum.... same with pens. During VBS, someone borrowed a pen and walked off. Bless her heart, she returned it 2 hours later. I love that! It was a good pen, too.

I was a prek teacher for 4 months and it was the most rewarding experience. However, many of the teachers believed since the kids were so young that they wouldn't remember what was said around them. Some of the things the teachers said about a kid *infront* of that kid... I totally understand needed to talk about them, but it should always be to try and help the kids, not just vent. I swear that place was one of the most toxic places I worked with teacher cliques and the trash teachers would say behind eachothers back.... Teaching college ain't that much better, but at least the standards aren't what they are in the public education, K-12 system

I hope she found some empathy after ranting at me infront of 20+ other kids i was in tears bc i felt so embarrassed. I hated the clip when i was younger, apparently in 1st grade my teacher thought i was so much of a terror, she'd move my clip so often, i don't even remember half the things i did so it didn't help me to learn how to behave.she then set up a teacher's conference with the principal and my mom just said rap her on the fingers with a ruler, then its done with, because she hated how that witch of a teacher would single me out when all of my other teachers had no problems. And in elementary i had mostly female teachers,it wasn't because i was more respectful towards male teachers. And my mom was actually volunteering in the library one day when my 1st grade class was in there, and when the kids were waiting for instructions quietly,1st grade lady and the librarian were talking about the union. She didn't even let me get a book from the book fair because it was beyond my reading level,so my mom hated her for that.

Dental visits are PRICEY). Also not necessarily applicable to Middle or High School, but the weird food combinations my elementary kiddos would eat always made me gag.

Ick: teachers who call their kids best friends. That’s just so creepy to hear someone say that to the kids. Build relationships but not BF status.
Non-ick: teaching a subject I really love, and getting to show that passion to the kids.
Clip charts are fine to use, competition between kids is good, embarrassment is good for kids. Just be there to teach the lesson afterwards

No that's not very trauma informed. Adding more trauma via embarrassment to a child is horrible and counter productive to changing their behavior.

(student here) an ick I have is how lax schools (spesifically Canadian schools) have gotten, i'm hearing people throw slurs and just hate speech around in the hallways and in the classroom, I, and others have tried to bring up this issue to staff but nothing has been properly done to stop it, we've had talks about it but that doesn't stop anything. we need to hold students acountable for their speech in the classroom, you don't know who it could affect. (like theres ALOT of homophobia, and as a (openly) queer student I try to educate people on why that's wrong but it always goes in one ear and out the other)

Hey y'all, factory workers regularly also have the no-ac issue. Their union leaders (if they even have one) can't/ won't get with the head honchos to update or install something better than a fan. People I know have to work in swampass conditions from May to Nov. and I don't know if it's bc OSHA looks the other way or what. :(

At my school we call the opposite of "trigger" a "sparkle"
Some of the best (primary) teacher sparkles:
    Silly dress up days
    Sitting and coloring with kids
Getting letters in the mail from past students
When the kids get in to a read aloud
Closing the book at the end and having the kids at such rapt attention that they just sit there for a second like 😮
    Accidental phallic artwork
    Accidental naughty spelling
Getting to brag to parents about their kids, especially if their kids are "tough"
Getting to learn all about their niche intrests, dinosaurs, eagles, greek mythology
    So many more
