Love the wisdom and balance in what you said. Obviously people can take their hobby wherever they want, but there do seem to be ways that are healthier than others. I have to remind myself every now and then too to keep the fun in cubing, which is more challenging when it's now my "work"! And great suggestion at the end too - sometimes it's ok to move on and do other things!
Thank you! It's reassuring to know that even someone like you still has to make sure to keep cubing fun!
TINGMAN!
This channel is really underrated! Very good!
Thank you so much!
I had a sorta similar experience when I was hard stuck averaging mid 10 or so, but man I really enjoy how high the skill ceiling is. I know there are always things I can do to actually grind for improvement if I feel motivated to (like making more progress on ZB, eliminating bad habits like going for bad OLLCP/COLL algs, etc), or I can just chill and spam mindless solves if I feel like doing it for enjoyment, or even just do a lot of untimed solves practicing seeing further in inspection or something without the stress of a timed result. For me, the key to solving my burnout was 100% to treat it more like a hobby than a job, which I didn't realize I was doing either.
That's an interesting point of view. Chill and mindless solves are definitely some of the best! The point about treating it like a hobby rather than a job is definitely something I have had to think about in the past. It becomes so easy to turn a hobby you loved into something your just doing to get a lower time!
i had no idea this channel existed, i was literally craving a vid of urs, and im so glad i found this!!
Thank you!
This video is just what I needed
Glad it was helpful!
The ending feels like Matthew Mayernik saying "When do we just let go?"
I've never heard of that before. What is it?!?
@@UK_Cuberit’s in his “should clock be removed from the WCA” video
Great video... I think you shared my feelings regarding - cube for fun and cube for performance.. I also had same issues while improving.. Good content keep going
Thank you! Yeah, this is definitely something that happens to a lot of cubers but it seems like no one really talks about it.
Came home to school to see this masterpiece of editing! Your videos are great!
Wow, thank you so much!
This video is so inspiring. Something every cube needs to know in just 5 minutes is simply awesome!!!😁👍👍
I took about a 2 year hiatus where I still solved everyday but wasn't working on getting better or learning anything new. My brother took interest into the hobby recently and reminded me why I enjoyed solving in the first place. Here I am back to trying to learn all 21 pll algs.
Glad you posted this. It's just affirmation to my sudden excitement for cubing again.
It's good that you're getting back into it again! Understanding what you enjoy about the hobby is definitely really important if you don't want to tire out again.
The edit is top notch.
Thank you so much!
Very good advice. I was beating my head against a wall to get to sub 20 and sat at about 21-22sec for a long time. I dont get a lot of time to cube and my sessions started getting frustrating. I've started this year off just doing solves, often using generated scrambles but usually not timing myself. Has definitely helped bring back the enjoyment of simply being able to solve a cube.
Yeah it can get really annoying when you just aren’t improving but I think the method you’re going with now is a lot better!
That's some clean editing, damn
Thank you!
Great video! I'm doing just like you, I stoped cubing on 2017, averaging 20+, and returned just a month or two ago. Now I am easily averaging sub-20 and practing a ton. I really missed my hobby.
Thank you! That's quite a long break to take! But I guess sometimes it takes that long to realise how much you actually enjoyed cubing. It's good that you're back cubing again.
You are soooo under rated dude
I subscribe 🎉
Thank you!!! That helps a lot!
This is going to be so long but I'm going to drop my experience here.
I started cubing on November 1, 2022. During the first 8 months of cubing, I was very addicted to cubing. Even when sleeping, I cubed (my mom has a picture of me cubing in my sleep) and I even cube at the bathroom.
I watch J perm and like his content, but every video of his got recommended to me and I had to watch. Now, Im very knowledgeable. I dont know what to do now. It feels like I've finished a very long game.
I quitted for 6 months cuz I got bored. I didn't really quit, I did solve a lot but I quitted learning for more and improving. Now Im back because there's a competition upcoming in our school (a relay type), so I'm teaching my classmates with the basics and a bit of F2L. As of now, I average 15-16 secs. I used to average 11-12. Thanks for the vid ❤
That is very similar to my own experience. I guess after a period of time where you go so hard at a specific thing, it's always going to become less fun eventually. But it's good to know that you're picking it back up again!
your so underrated bro like even tingman commented bro keep going!
Thank you so much!
Love this. This is what has happened to me recently as well. Btw I could relate to everything you said in this video. Love you bro
Thank you so much, that means a lot!
@@UK_Cuber you dont need to thank me. I didnt speak anything but facts :)
I'm exactly at this point right now. I've gone one month without cubing and today I did some solves, which I really enjoyed. You just earned a susbcriber.
Yeah this is something that definitely happens to cubers, but at least you are now enjoying solves! (Thank you)
At 4:53 I have a quick tip for that OLL: the 2nd R2 could be R2’ to completely eliminate regrips. Also this is a great video, I will definitely be focusing on this in my own practice routine. I think for me changing up the types of puzzles I’m practicing brings the most joy, and improvement brings a great deal of joy too so constantly changing up the events in working on will bring more consistent improvement to me and also more enjoyment being less repetitive. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for the advice! It's definitely all about making a practice schedule that suits you in order to make it fun, and other events can help too!
Whenever I have a little break from an event, I'm better after! (Left 2x2 after about 7s avg, went back a few months later, about 5 secs!)
I took a break as u know from about September this year to February, I think it was because full OLL was so daunting.
I also find that turning differently (smoother) makes it WAY more satisfying. It's really nice to get a sub-17 solve with like 3 TPS.
Yeah that happens! (I also find full OLL daunting!)
Thanks for this reminder, I needed to hear this!
No problem!
When I started Speedcubing about 4 years ago, I also thought that I would never be even close to being sub-10, but as time passed, I gradually improved by just doing solves and learning new algs from time to time. Most people think that they are never gonna become sub-10 or another specific goal, but it's gonna happen without you even noticing
Yeah exactly. You can improve so much without needing to do deliberate practice all the time and just waiting for your times to go down.
Thanks, I was one step before quitting cubing.
ngl after watching this and considering mindset a lot more, i broke a crap ton of my PBs. it really is all about how we approach cubing
Another thing that I want to add to this is you should have a more "realistic" goal, that is something that you surely can achieve, and slowly increase the goals every time you achieve them. Like for me my top goal is to achieve sub-10 and my current goal is have consistent sub-15 average. Very challenging atm but definitely not impossible. Having a realistic goal means that its easier to see your personal improvement, and the achievements will drive your motivation to push yourself further.
That's good advice. If I had a less challenging goal then it would be so much easier and less time-consuming to achieve! However, there is definitely something to be said about goals being TOO easy. Like if I knew I could achieve the goal really quickly, then it wouldn't be a challenge and I would get bored pretty quickly! But I can fully see the value in what your saying!
Insanely underrated video
Thank you so much!
you are geting beter
Thank you so much!
my biggest tip is to slow solve most of the time. i only do cs timer sessions a couple times per week but i cube almost all day
That's sometimes good but I find slow solves quite boring! The thing I like about cubing the most is going fast.
Love the thumbnail!
Thank you!
I quit for 5 years and again over covid. Teaching cubing keeps me competing which keeps me practicing. All the new cubes that come out are also motivating.
Yeah that makes sense. With the new cubes, it would be nicer if they all actually had significant differences rather than being very similar but I guess it's good that there are a lot of releases.
dont worry bro i wont LOOSE my spark
How am I this bad at spelling! It has been changed now 😂
I've recently switched to roux and I have more fun in doing slow solves in my free time than i had practicing with CFOP. I find it interesting to learn new methods (currently dr). I want to start new puzzles like squan as well after my exams. I just have more fun in creative thinking and slow solves than deliberate practice.
Yeah that seems a lot better. Deliberate practice can definitely get boring compared to normal/slow solves.
The thing you seem to forget is that you can still improve significantly but slowly with just solves, I average 9 and do very little focused practice, with a lot more solves I could probably get that down to 7. You can also get some enjoyment with other events, you'd be surprised what transferable skills you can learn from other cubes: big cubes help with turning accuracy; megaminx helps make F2L easier because finding all the pieces is much harder on megaminx; 2x2 and pyraminx can help you see more into the solve, especially if you get to the level of one-looking (which I have not)
Yeah, definitely. However when you want to improve, just solving is often frowned upon as a method. But understanding that just doing solves is a completely fine way to practice is very beneficial. Big cubes can also help quite considerably, especially with accuracy and look ahead but I’ve personally never been overly interested in other events so that is less valuable to someone like me!
I have lost two Spark 7x7s in my time cubing
Haha!
a cuber for almost 9 years now and it is indeed hard to improve after like becoming sub 20 it took me 8 months to be sub 20 and and additional 3 years to be sub 10 (but I was just goofing around everyday cuz I was bored which made me not being able to practice 3x3) and ummm... 5 years later... I average like 7-8 seconds now I mostly spend my time learning 1LLL cuz it's fun learning algs (I cube for 7 hours a day my fingers aches)
the thing with me is that the thing that makes cubing fun is improving my times. should i keep doing the deliberate practice or try something else?
It depends, whatever you find the most enjoyable. If you can see the good in doing deliberate practice then keep going but if you find it boring (which most people do!) then try something else.
Dude I KNEW Shortcat sounded like Jperm!! I found Shortcat a while before I found Jperm (Only recently started trying to get better at solving a cube), and I always had the suspicion that they were the same person. He just has such a distinct voice and I can't believe I never knew he had 2 super successful channels in completely different subjects!
Yeah, he is clearly very good at the RUclips game!
Which cube are you using in this video plzz tell 😢
It's the MoYu Weilong WRM V9
Him "Cubing is dead" also him "cubing always comes back"
Cubing dying and cubing being dead are quite different. I believe that cubing, if nothing changes, will die. But for the time being, cubing always finds its way back whenever you take a break.
I've been at 25 secs for a year and can't crack the barrier consistently. It really ticks me off
Yeah that is definitely something that I've experienced as well. Eventually you will crack through!
how on earth did i spot a 2 look oll on a 12 second solve? (2:03) im barely sub 20 and can all exept for two advanced oll algs.
impressive!!!!
ps. great vid keep up the great work
I didn't even notice that! (Thank you)
I mean, i never had to force myself to cube, so i guess its aight for now
Good, try to keep it that way!
Youve been cubing for 3+ years, have the best cubes, and practiced so much, how are you not sub 10 yet? I just achieved sub 10 a month ago and passed you as a milestone 7 months ago (your average). My one tip is just to relax bro you'll get there someday, sub 10 isn't everything. Just get a cube that suits you (v5) and pls relax your turning.
Btw good editing
Yeah I can understand what you’re saying. I mean having ‘the best cubes’ doesn’t impact solves overly much and I don’t practice that often. But at some point I do need to get sub-10! 😂
@@UK_Cuber i think your weakness is your fluidity. You turn like a beginner tbh.
When i looked at the thumbnail, i thought to myself, isn't spark a 7x7?
Haha! Maybe a slightly poor choice of words for a cubing video!
🥲@@UK_Cuber
Sub 20 is kicking my ass
I'm going to take 50+ years to learn full oll. One oll per year😂
That seems totally reasonable! I might do the same!
I use the sorta method (invented by me)
Jperm said he quit cubing tho😢
I haven't seen that. When did he say this?
I havent seen that either. I dont think he has said that. He has only said that he has burnout and no video ideas but still cubes quite frequently (at least from the last I heard of him)
Where???
@@UK_Cuber I don’t know if he said that but I got told he didn’t enjoy it so he quit
You know you should really consider using a rotation less V-perm because the V-perm you’re using uses a rotation and it not very “fluid “. I use the one where it goes like: (R’ U R U’)(R’f’U’)(anti-sune)(f R). I think it’s worth trying.
Yeah that’s a fair point. I chose this one a couple years ago and it’s never changed! But I will try the one you recommended.
@@UK_Cuber I personally like the rotation v perm because rotations aren't always bad. Rotation v perms are very good! But I like learning new algs bcoz for me that is very fun as I can learn algs very quickly and implement them. Like you said, cubing should be fun and for me learning new algs and methods is very fun! Even getting new cubes can rekindle the interest but yes, even I took a 5 month break from April to October and it was worth it!
the best way and fastest way to improve for 99% of people who average over 8 seconds is just fix your f2l solutions and then focus on cross+1, you should worry more about f2l and less about everything else because LL is a smaller portion of a solve
That makes sense. I guess F2L makes up so much of the solve compared to a couple seconds on OLL and PLL.
That is true but that has literally nothing to do with the video 💀
@@Luna77543 I just saw the video, read he had something that said learn 3 algs fix ra perm fingertricks and something else i forgot but nothing related to fixing his f2l solutions, hes doing like half his pairs in 10-13 moves so I obviously thought I should point that out
If you are looking for tips then learn U2 double flicks. This is one of the biggest flaws in your solving.
Thank you, this is something I'm definitely trying to improve!
First off: Find a better V Perm fingertrick
Definitely something I need to do!
