Like you said, I don't mind tipping for certain things, but it has gotten extreme. One that you brought up is at a coffee shop. For some reason, if it's a mom & pop shop, I don't mind tipping; but at like a Starbucks, I absolutely refuse to do so. Double standard, I know, but life is full of double standards and unfairness.

About ten years ago, I got out of the habit of paying cash in favor of debit cards. Now, I've gotten back into the habit of carrying cash to avoid the tip hassle. Hell, I mostly just make my own food 99% of the time. I bought a bottle of milk at the airport. I pulled it from the refrigerator and put it on the counter. The barista did NOTHING. The tip option popped up at the cashier. She gave me an expectant look. I put away my debit card and paid cash. She rolled her eyes. I'm done! I'm just making my own food from now on. Tipping expectations removed this consumer from the marketplace altogether.
    Nice going.

Stop tipping altogether. Making a simple purchase these days has become irritating with tip screens shamelessly asking for tips in gas stations, convenience stores, stationary shops, etc. I once had to have my AC repaired, and the technician had the nerve to ask for a tip. Why on earth should I tip you for just doing your job?"

It is not that tipping is out of control, it is corporate greed that is out of control. The employer should pay a decent living wage. And I also totally disagree that if you do not tip you get crappy service. I lived almost 30 years in the UK when tipping was not expected and trust me bar tenders and landlords really went the extra mile, but not in the hope that you will give them money, but because they had a job they liked.

If a server earning 15 bucks per hour gives you 15 bucks worth of service, a tip should not be necessary but, if that server, somehow, gives you exemplary service and adds something to your experience that is above the norm, they should be given a reward, a tip, for going that extra mile. I don't tip my plumber. I don't tip my mechanic. I don't tip my doctor. I pay the bill for the service they were hired for and that I expect to receive. Restaurant staff should be paid a livable wage. Menu prices should be based accordingly and we should not be expected to make up for the financial greed of owners or corporate. Tipping should end. Add 20% to the cost of the hamburger but, no tip. I should get to decide whether or not I want to pay that amount.

I've always taken an extra mental step to round up my purchase a few cents when I'm tipping for food orders. Sometimes I'll add in an extra dollar if I'm feeling generous or the service was stupendous. But lately I've noticed how quick and easy it is to press a button to add an automatic tip, and suddenly the already pricey order feels like going overboard. It's kind of scary how instantaneous it is. Like a bullet to your bank account.

hi there, local dog groomer swinging by way too late to add anything meaningful to the argument; the tip epidemic is pretty much a side effect of businesses switching to using square or stripe instead of traditional cash registers, and your barista probably would prefer you pick the 'no tip' option and just shove your change in the jar since the change in the jar is a lot harder to tax, and square/stripe takes their own cut too.
the people who get tipped are also unhappy about the installment of those stupid ipads, and the oversaturation of them has caused people to stop tipping for services that they should really, really be tipping for altogether. generally you should tip for a luxury or trade service unless its unclear who specifically provided the service for you. i dont know who made my drink at starbucks, but i know who my waitress is at dennys. always tip your nail tech, hairdresser, dog groomer, waitstaff, etc...

Red flags right out the gate and I shouldn't have ignored them, I ended up being the manager of that place but I got no title and no extra pay. I absolutely have mellowed now that I'm not begging for scraps, but I can admit I was part of the problem when I was in the thick of it, it was the only way I would get fairly compensated. I was stressed and pissed off about it, and while I agreed it was bullshit, it was really difficult to say that when I was having customers rant and yell at me over the system as if it was my fault that my employers didn't pay me. The company went bankrupt in the end so its not like they could afford to pay me either way, still sucked for all parties ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
