The Pebble Time was actually a solid product that was shipped and later iterated on. Fitbit bought them out and killed the company that way.

They bought Pebble to get the patents and then never produced anything that was even remotely as good as Pebble did. I'm still salty that there are no proper e-paper watches on the market. The display was so good and there were very cool apps for it. Such a shame.

It really is impressive seeing some of the "Most Funded" Kickstarters. Most of them are bogus lifestyle products that either never went anywhere or remain solely in the luxury space, and then randomly you'll just see one of (what is regarded as) the best video games ever made. Almost all of the best kickstarters are from semi-established companies that just need a little extra liquid funding to release a new product/line. And most of those end up being tabletop games, strangely enough.

Personally I think the biggest problem with Kickstarter is that all the funny scams disappeared
Like where is my crystal-vibration-powered tinfoil hat cancer curing machine? It's all just low quality AI products
I genuinely went looking for those stupid esoteric products for a laugh a while ago and couldn't find any

KS is always an unfortunate gamble for your time and money. As a consumer, I've met both ends of the spectrum in regards of what I paid for and what I was given.
For some projects, I got lucky to receive the most beautiful pieces of art I was promised and am proud to own and admire everyday. For others, the final product may not be as expected, or even worth my money, but at least they actually made it to the end. For others (and it's almost always video game-related...) it almost always falls apart. Ghosting, lack of updates, zero physical rewards, "beta tests" that look AND play like utter shite, the list goes on. Hell, I'm not even talking about FNF, some of you might recall names like Strength of the Sword, Zombie Playground, and the one where you're supposed to play kaiju fighting other kaiju. I wish I could delete these pledges from my history solely because they are not even worth remembering.
Even though I'm happy with the stuff I did get, and I'll always appreciate ongoing projects for ACTUALLY updating their communities and taking in feedback, it's literally playing games with the devil when you genuinely want to support something you think is awesome, only for you to pay $50+ for a mere memory of it.

The worst part is businesses can "pledge" or advertise on behalf of a kickstarter they feel is worthwhile--- have people fund it.... then if it fails, ignore it and if it is a success -- buy it.
It's purely a way to allow companies (mostly large companies imho) to hedge risk in testing products and then only sink extra funding into projects that work/make it out.
    eg: pebble.

I think the very point of the Kickstarter program is to help finance projects where traditional investors would usually just say no. Having Kickstarter step in and enforce policies means they're no longer different from your typical investment firm.
Then again, Kickstarter can be rife with fraud especially that it relies on a founder with high Rizz stats and they can easily get you to convince to invest even if they have nothing to show for

So, I love the video, it's great, and you make some good points.
But honestly, while I agree Kickstarter (KS) is incentivised to ensure projects make as much money as possible, I feel like everyone knows that.
Also, you mentioned you did a business degree in this video, so you more than anyone should know that KS is essentially a digital dragons den (shark tank for people not in the UK).
The person leading the project goes into the den (the KS website), they ask people for money and then those people looking at the website determine whether or not they're going to back this project based on whether or not they like the product.
It's literally investing with less benefits, because you don't ever get the opportunity to make more money on your investment.
Now, if KS had an option where projects could offer a profit share for a set amount of time, that'd be better than just offering a product at the end of the day. Although, they'd then need to give the projects a choice on what percentage backers get and how many share positions there are available.

how do u graduate business school without understanding who actually gets the money from payment processing fees

    • @jamieregan
      @jamieregan  Месяц назад +1

I read an article which stated KS earned their money from their fee plus the payment processing fee. In my head when writing and filming the video, I figured KS was overcharging the processing fee similar to how companies will overcharge you for shipping and pocket the surplus, and it fit my narrative so I didn't challenge the idea. When editing, I realized it's almost certainly going entirely to a company like Stripe, so I made the note within the video. To my knowledge, Kickstarter does take a cut of this fee, but it's ~0.1%.
The point that I'm making in that moment still stands, hence why the segment is still in the video, but I felt it was important to spotlight my error.
