  • during lockdown the Irish rail Enterprise diagrams where operated by Hyundai Rotem ICR units instead of the usual de dietrich sets. 22205 is seen working the 10:35 ex Belfast Central service to Dublin back in June at Moira Railway Station, County Down.

DMU’s were much better for the service, hardly any delays and no cancellations, now we’re back to constant delays and cancellations. The DD’s are crap, and no one can argue against that because there’s no valid argument, they’re uncomfortable, rough ride, dirty, and slow. A DMU is faster, in some people’s opinions more comfortable, better ride quality, clean and they get there quicker. I think it’s good that NIR are finally starting to look at new DMU’s similar to the 4000’s to run the service.

If you want to know why the DDs are bad blame Translink’s dire management. If they where maintained properly and didn’t get CAF to refurb them they would be perfectly fine.
Translink and Irish rail have permanently ruined the sets by running the 201s completely wrong. That results in the pollution. GM advised IE not to do so but they did resulting in train failures and constant faults and a fire.
Both operating company’s should be ashamed. The rolling stock however isn’t the problem and hasn’t been. You need to remember these are over 20 years old. I personally prefer the DDs for comfort. The Railcars are better for speed. The 201s are never designed for intercity trains but as per Translink’s rubbish management never listened.

Northern Ireland Transport Scenes they’d be worse if caf hadn’t refurbed them, if anything that’s the only reason why they’re acceptable to still run, they’re ancient and need replaced ASAP. Also public ally released documents by Translink show that the majority of the time its the DD’s which are the root cause of the issues. The 201’s are fine, but old and tatty but they work just fine. I agree that the sets are really bad, but I don’t think it’s fair just to blame the companies, it’s the individuals who they contract to do the job who I personally think are the blame, the CAF’s are now starting to get tatty, and they’ve also just put 3012 out in traffic after refurbishment, and they’ve neglected to stick logos onto the middle carriages which I personally see as laziness. I agree that the 201’s were never designed for intercity, they were designed for freight if I remember correctly. The DD’s are way past their sell-by date, and are probably worth more in scrap. The fact that a travelling fitter has to be onboard each DD set at all time’s is just a warning sign if anything. The DD’s cause more delays and cancellations, and cost more than it’s worth, if anything they cost more money than they should, considering the knock-on effect they have each time a set decides to break down, which is on an almost daily basis at the minute.
Also you said about pollution, I also agree with your statement about them being non eco-friendly, and I’ve looked at some documents which have been released to the public and trust me, they are filthy and consume a lot of fuel. Having a DMU on the service not only means the service is faster, it also means it’s more reliable as it has more traction engines, whereas the current enterprise area only have 1 traction engine. A DMU is also lighter, and can fit more people onboard, and is more efficient. A DMU can also couple up to another DMU to increase capacity, and has better acceleration and is better at breaking. The current sets seem to be getting worse and worse everyday, and it’ll not be too long now until we see them gone for good hopefully. As much as the DD’s are loved by enthusiasts, they’re a pain at the best of times. Whenever travel restrictions were lifted, I travelled down to Dublin on 3003, and passengers were very happy to be onboard that, and one woman made the comment “better than the usual trains” or something along those lines, and when passengers say that about something which is tatty enough as it is, I think it speaks volumes. Also she commented on the ride quality, because the DMU’s don’t give a tough ride unlike the DD’s.
I was then on 3005 back which is a refurbished, and the passengers were delighted with it, and they complimented the train to the staff and said it was much more comfortable. I was then on a 22k down to newry the next day and the passengers were happy enough, and then I got a local train back up, 4007.
A few days later I went to go and see the DD’s go back into passenger service, and I travelled on the first one out of Belfast (in passenger service) since the start of lockdown, and the same woman was back onboard, and she said she’s going to get the bus from now on as she hates riding the normal enterprise trains. She said she’ll only travel now if it’s been replaced with a different train. I think this speaks volumes about how much passé are starting to dislike the trains.
I myself had a chat with a few people on Facebook the other day and the DD’s came up, and everyone was saying about how much better it was having DMU’s on the service.
DMU’s are overall better for the service, in terms of less cost, better timing, better ride quality, passenger satisfaction, and overall efficiency.

I took a DD from belfast to dublin and it made me nearly miss my connection.
The Cork service has the same problem. Who's idea was it to have older slower trains on the main line services?

Motion Mode - Flight and Train Travel Reports DMU’s and EMU’s are much better for any service, whether it be long distance, express, semi-express, all stoppers, e.t.c.
