My late brother raced 2 stroke twins from the late sixties throughout the 70s and this video is the best memory of the sound of his bad ass rd 400 ! I remember the day he bought that bike brand new in 76 , rode it home and we started tearing it down and heavily modifying the engine . he was so knowledgeable making expansion Chambers for race bikes. He used to scare the living shit out of anyone who dared to ride on back. I thought for sure the racing would have taken his life but ALS did. I'm sure Swenson is in heaven doing this all day long.....miss you Terry ....godspeed my brother!
I felt like I had my virtual reality set on and I was riding that was so cool.Reminds me of way back in 1980 when I went to the tt on my x7. I filled the tank at Ramsey 3.3 gallons and after one lap I hit reserve that's about 15mpg riding in the red everywhere but it was such a rush. That,s what two strokes do to you. Many thanks for letting me relive my youth.
Wow that takes big balls or madness ! A truly insane ride . Today's bikes could never exite me like these 2 strokes I grew up with I'll say that and anyone can see and hear why .
@David Miatke read carefully, "excite me like the two strokes" he means the two stroke are exciting without going at 15 million miles per hour, the 2 stroke is more fun at lower speeds
Ah the blue smoke 2 stroke. I've watched this a few times so I put my headphones on and just listened . . amazing . great great bike. . This guy knows what he's at for sure. . I'd even love to be pillion for this one. . savage stuff
Beautiful driving at high speed, realized the dream of many riders in the world, especially the RD350 owners like me. Thanks for the ride. Detail: No one has surpassed you, was the fastest.
Awesome awesome ..... the sounds and that gorgeous acceleration rate .... only thing missing sat at the PC is the smell of two stroke . Massive thumbs up :) \m/

I was expecting at any second the crank was going to grenade; you must have welded it. I have a built RZ350 YPVS, 85 I tuned for racing 25 years ago. Full on stage 3 port and polish, milled head, Spec2 pipes, boysen reeds, opened TZ750 blocks, block spacer, 32 mm carbs, welded crank, ported crankcase transfer ports, 1 tooth down in the front, port matched pistons, gold valve emulators, EBC rotors, telefix brace, tuned KYB rear shock, steering dampener. Makes about 70 hp at the wheel...goes like stink. Next rebuild I think I'm going to put some Athena barrels (485 cc) and stroker crank and try to get 100 HP out of it. It will pull 10500 rpm in top (~130mph) The one bike I'll never get rid of, kids will get it when I'm gone. Ride safe
I'm gutted sick I sold mine, that engine sound with the exhaust note is pretty unmistakable, mine was fairly standard apart from the microns and I put a pair of renthal bars on it, I've had two 125s a 250 and the ypvs350n and they all took a lot of punishment without the engine going tits up although the carbs on the 250 were the Bain of my life, I could never get them right and as a result my second 125 with a 180 kit, micron and a really good carb was as quick as the 250, I'll never put pod filters on a two stroke ever again if I can help it especially as I live in quite a wet climate
I had loads of issues getting an n2 (U.K. spec) as fast as an earlier 350 ypvs (bikini original model). The two different power specs that came out cross continents were not known much about until much later but the slower one was 55hp vs 63. This difference included a bigger air jet and different main in the carbs for full power which it seems could not be main jetted for (which you have negated) as well as better looking but slower exhausts (did another 6mpg, the peak power reflection was set for ~ 9500 rpm) but the 63 hp model (silencer looking exhausts) needed an extra tooth on the front, not one less.-It would do 125+ mph stock @ over 10k rpm in 6th. I think you will find with barrel and head work, exhausts etc the ignition unit is fighting against you trying to run at 40 Mpg.. That bike should be pulling like a loco to ~ 11000, not meakly hitting 130 at 10500 (with lower gearing). I'm guessing it is retarding the ignition timing so far past about 9700 rpm you are losing 7bhp and a lot of torque. I struggled with this problem for ages , I had Towcester tuning stage 2 the top end, put allspeeds on it, .. I never got it going bananas 130mph+ so traded up to an RG 500.
Sitting on a office chair i was leaning over each side watching that, hands sweating. This is why I love the LC's and YPVS , so maneuverable and powerful, certainly give bigger bikes a run for the money. Thank you
This vid is absolutely brilliant, nowhere better than the IOM to blast it, onboard footage is superb, great two stroke sound from this little gem of a bike and they handle pretty well too. One of my favourite onboard videos.
this run took me way back. when we were all riding our first bikes back in the start of the 70's which were mainly trophys, saints, bonnies and beeza's , one mate stepped right outside of the box by buying one of the first RDs to come into the country after trading an early 60s beeza 500 single.. we never saw him again. just his blue stroke trail. not long after i bought the new J model waterbus in candy lavender(crimson), the last one on the shelf at the time. the best bike ive ever owned. I rode my mates RD a few times and it was deadly. in the day there was nothing that couild beat it. nothing and my gt had no chance.

great riding and thaaaat ripping sound. i rode my rd350f2 around the island several times. surprised many bigger bikes. but my stock suspension was terrifying, hit a bump mid corner and it was all over the place. had to sell it before it killed me, get it in the power band and it was addictive couldnt stop for anyone, overtaking on blind bends, taking one, two, three a whole line of cars because the buzz couldnt be let go. 20mpg when it did 70 boggling around town, a bike with split personality. ive ridden much more powerful bikes and they were boooring, power without effort, handling without excitement. i swapped it for a friends CBR600 and found myself doing 100+mph to get the same thrills. he got off the RD and said 'can i keep it?' its twice as much fun as the CBR. my reactions arent good enough now. great memories. thanks.
I'm lucky to be able to ride a 1970's 2 stroke 250cc bike as everyday transport. I've been riding 2 stroke motorcycles everyday since 1980. It's in the blood. I now own 9 x 2 stroke motorcycles. Jeez, reminds me of my RD30F2 on the island in the mid90s. All those sections. Wheelying out of the Gooseneck. Flat out on Sulby Straight and Cronk y Voddy. That amazing scream of the engine like tearing silk, and the slingshot acceleration between 30 and 80. Problem was it didnt always go where you pointed it. This one has uprated suspension and swinging arm to do that on the mountain, mine was all over the place but it always felt really fast and got past bikes twice its size. When I had a go on a CBR600 I was going twice as fast after the RD. Nothing like as exciting. Poor old bike has been in the garage with a busted engine for ten years now. I really should pass it on because I'm not mad enough to ride it properly anymore.
Why all the jerking of the throttle? You'd be much smoother and faster if you kept the throttle open. You're asking for the crank to shatter with all the shock loading.
Yes everyone says what a great rider but I say it's all show jerking the engine like that to foul the people everyone else is just cruising the bike is tuned to run like stock that's all

That was fun thanks I I haven’t been on aRD in a long time
Incredible riding mate..My kawa gpz750 turbo will find it hard keeping with you, cheers.
Serious bit of road ripping there ......if i was using the Rd 350 on the track id definitely use clip ons but sure thats just personal preference .....great vid man thanks for the post ....
6:04 matey heard that unmistakable sound of 2 stroke screaming up behind him lol. Racing round the Isle of Man on a sunny day on a RD350.......does it get any better??
This was my first bike. Every other bike I had paled in comparison.
MAGIC - The RD350 was king of the road - Bring her back
Amazing driving, wow....
Epic riding👍That's fast, even for a power valve
It’s people like you who give motorcycles a bad name - Well done 😀🤣
Definitely my next project, miss that scream and the power band omg and the smell.
