      @@marcmarc172Pat Metheny hates Kenny G more than any ‘Jazz’ musician. He has a video where he calls Kenny the biggest trash Jazz musician out there. According to Pat, the world revolves around him due to him being a Legend in his own mind. To this day, i cant name one damn Metheny song-and im 45. Kenny is out to sell records and it bothers Pat that he has destroyed him in album sales and popularity. No one gives a shit about how good a Jazz musician is if they cant write a catchy tune and hold a massive audience for 3 minutes.

      i would say it fits.
      but for non listeners its really hard to understand because there is no introduction to it. He just plays this out of nowhere. it would be more fitting to slowly approach this idea of improvisation

    Kenny G is actually a VERY great saxophone player and is very very smart of what he chooses to play. He's obviously not the most talented nor technical, but he's extremely underrated in the jazz community because, hate. And overly loved in the pop community because average people have little music sense.

    I used to think Kenny G doesn’t know how to play Jazz or is soft until i began listening closely to the end of most of his songs and heard lines and licks that will take years to master. He just chooses not to play Jazzy stuff not that he can't play it.

  • @xxczerxx
    @xxczerxx Год назад +52

    It's crazy that Kenny G knows how to play well/interestingly but just...doesn't. I get it...he does it for $$$, but surely at this point he could just go on stage, play a few of his hits, and then spice it all up with more interesting straight jazz stuff? I'm sure in his heart he prefers the real stuff (not to sound elitist)

    Kenny plays what he wants because he loves to not because he can’t…old Kenny g live around duotunes album…much more grit. I like his rendition of Champagne live with George Duke. Plus it’s forced amongst college sax players to talk crap on G…most of them have half the chops and just learned a few lines from a Garzone or bergonzi book. 99 m% have half the chops of Kenny and only heard a standard album. Even sir valor says Kenny’s sound across all 3 horns being so similar is an amazing feat in its own in sac sound. Played for 30 years and still can enjoy a few Kenny live tunes.

      He’s doing a battle with the bass player in a Segway at the end of “Midnight Motion” I believe it’s from Kenny G live at Montreux in late 80s. The band and songs had some grit there. Couple good tracks from that video was Champagne with George Duke (who killed it), Sade, Midnight motion.

      @@notebooktranscriptions I listened again and stand by my comment. I did hear a b5, but again, very simplistic...on the list of great sax players, Mr G.doesn't even rank...you probably think what he is playing is jazz.....I recognize it as 'fluff', I know because I used to play that way...

      @@coajrmusic I'm not trying to suggest Kenny G is a great.
      Thought I would unpack some of the concepts he plays here to maybe deliver a better appreciation of it:
      Bar 6:
      -Superimposing Lydian over the V (I guess this is what you were referring to by b5?)
      -Angular lines
      -Chromatic & diatonic enclosures
      Bar 7:
      -Classic jazz usage of triplets on arpeggios
      -Diatonic enclosures & language
      -Landing and holding on an extension
      -Chromatic enclosure
      Bar 8:
      -Superimposing E triad over G7
      -Sideslip
      Bar 9:
      -Sideslip
      -Aeolian->Dorian
      To name a few by following along with the transcription.
      It can be super handy to dig into these things and pull them apart to see what is actually happening, otherwise it can be easy to dismiss it as a digital exercise like you mentioned because it sounds fast, when actually a lot of factors are at play.
      My musical background is in jazz, yes I would call what he played jazz. Believe it or not, fluff & frills are jazz and actually a big part of the tradition.
